Cycling Northern Thailand // Chiang Mai to the Laos Border // World Bicycle Touring Episode 38

- From Chiang Mai, we took some of the busiest highways we'd cycled in Thailand to go further north. The riding conditions improved a lot once we reached the farming valleys of Fang and Tha Ton, and we took an incredible dirt road route into Chiang Rai. We had a break from the bikes in Chiang Rai before heading to the Golden Triangle and traveling along the Mekong River to the border with Laos.
Time Frame: Early January 2023

Guys I was right there. But when I was on that dirt road (perhaps that very one) I was stupid, it started to rain, I got stuck in the mud and had to camp out there with the frogs. That shot of homeboy with his beer and that golden traffic circle (at 11:00) behind him, man, it takes me back.
That road would be treacherous in the rain, we were lucky to be there in dry season. We miss Thailand, it's one of our favorite places on the planet. The people and food are just fantastic, especially when you get out of the big tourist hotspots.

What an inspiration. I wasted so many trips to Thailand NOT doing something like this. Now I’m married with a kid and don’t have time for lengthy holidays. Oh well…I’ll wait until retirement and watch your videos in the meantime. Good for you both. Enjoy life. Every moment.
Thanks
Thank you!
She is so strong rider I wish my wife could be like her. Ride alongside the river in Chaingrai is one of the best ever. Can't wait to see your next adv guy.

Nice and colorful. Thanks!
Amazed by your content. Just recently started biking more and hope to bike to different countries one day instead of taking the plane.

You two are amazing. Thank you for the video experience. Looks like the Surly (?) bicycles are holding up well. Eagerly await the next video.

No shortage of amazing food in Thailand! 😋
I love the tour-planning-face in the Hostel 😂. How long are you guys on tour for? Love your videos....alwas too short though😊
Glad you enjoy the videos! We've been on tour for about 2 years and hope to keep at it for another year and a half!
Have you done a video about you're route planning?what apps you use etc.
7/11 food rules !!! after a hard night of drinking sang som ( thai rum ) there is nothing better that the food at the mighty 7/11
Excellent video. I could not wait for this one to come out. You all do a great job with these. Just curious, did the Thai and Lao authorities allow you to ride your bikes from Thailand to Loas? I have read that you have to take a bus from Chiang Khong through Lao immigration control. Thank you again and safe travels!
That's right, they make you take a bus across the friendship bridge. I forget exactly how much it cost but there was hardly any traffic on the bridge so it was kind of annoying that they didn't allow bikes.
Nice guys❤ cycle riding country to country crossing on arrival visa as good ?sir
May we know where to buy that kind of brim you always use while under the heat?
Thank you
It's from a company called Da Brim. They're great!
Hi, any chance of sharing your route and if you would have done it any differently if done again? I'm planning a similar route for next month. Cheers.
Hey there! We are working on a blog post for this section with more details and a GPX track. In the meantime, we have a big map on our website that gives an overview of our whole route:

@@RollingExistence Cheers. Did you camp much on the way from Chiang Mai to Laos? Any recommendations would be great.
hey rad videos, just came upon your Chanel and getting good beta as I am setting out on a 3 year world tour in 8 months. I am wondering about the hats you're wearing over the helmets, I assume those are just modified sun hats or are those made specifically to fit over cycling helmets? looking forward to carting up on all your content. Cheers
They're specifically made for helmets, they're from a company called Da Brim. We highly recommend them!
@@RollingExistence heck yeah, that's legendary mate. Thanks for the beta! so stoked for y'all and your journey! Also digging the Melanzana, I'm in Carbondale 🤙🏽
I love those Buddhist Purgatory Gardens and Hell Gardens. They're so strange.
What's the process for renewing a visa like you guys did? Is there just some sort of government office that you can go to?
They were really surprising to stumble upon! And we just showed up at the Chiang Mai Immigration Office, filled out the paperwork they asked for, and paid the fee. It was pretty easy!
That's awesome. Seems like all the visa stuff in SE Asia is super straight forward. One less thing to worry about!
How long in Thailand
Are you using mountain bike?
We are on Surly Ogres, they are not quite a mountain bike but they can fit wide tires, 29x2.5. They're kind of in between a regular touring bike and a mountain bike.
Please please please don’t make any more comments that could get you into trouble!
I hope you’re staying out of Myanmar. 🫤
Yes unfortunately it's not a good time to visit..
