Wife and I had Just watched this video as it came out last Year, and we had conveniently just hit the road on the way to Uluru and Alice springs. Steve you have been a massive inspiration to us. Picked up some Adventure bikes and are keen to see the outback of Aus in person :)
I climbed Ayers Rock in 1978 before all the development in that area; just a campground and a couple of pubs out there then. Took a flight over the rock and out to the Olga's as well. Very impressive scenery. I was out there to meet a group from the WA BMW club who had ridden the Gunbarrel Hwy. on two R90S' w/- sidecars and a solo R100/7. We then all travelled into the Alice for the Centre Rally.
The BMWMCCWA is full of old's n bold's. Could have been Goldie who was on that trip but there are some of the older blokes that have moved on. It is very civilised around Uluru and the Olgas now.

Just looked up BMW tattoo on an image search, and noticed someone screenshotted your tattoo from this vid and put it on their site! I guess that's a compliment.
This has brought back fond memories for me . I did pretty much this ride starting from Kalgoorlie meandering me way all over and eventually up to Darwin and of course back again visiting other areas and back roads on the way back to Kalgoorlie. This was done on my Harley and towing a trailer way back in 1990 when the Gulf war was going on and petrol prices went through the roof. I remember paying $2.30 a liter at the Alice and nearly choked on it . Some of the roads were that bad I had to remove the trailer and skull drag it and the bike through bull dust and loose sand in some cases a couple of hundred meters at a time. The corrugations had to be seen and experienced to believe how truly destructive they can be. And by contrast sometimes ride and tow at over 100 km/h But this was the best adventure I have ever had by far and would love to do it again but now too old to try repeat it. My only regret was doing this ride by myself and not with other like minded mates. About three years ago I did the central road from Kalgoorlie to Darwin in less than 48 hours pretty much non stop apart from filling the fuel from a 44 gallon drum in the van just to pick up a motorcycle and trailer I had bought on eBay. That was a fantastic experience and great drive too but most of the road at least when I went on it was pretty darn good and certainly better than some of our highways.
Very familiar country, I had about a year out at Giles, so passed through a lot of those communuities. Docker river, Warrakuna, Warburton, ect. I know what these roads are like after rain, as you say treacherous. Very enjoyable though.

The engine has done 100,000km. The bike has started to use a bit of oil but not that much that it is a concern. We got to the Olgas/Uluru lookout and I had an oil warning light come on. The oil wasn't low but because i started the bike on a lean i think the engine thought it was low. With 1,200km of Outback to transit through i didnt want to take a chance. All correct. Thanks for watching.
Yes, there was and is a serious problem with aboriginals particularly the younger ones sniffing petrol in outback australia, opal fuel has low aroma and doesnt contain any of the properties needed to get high from sniffing it.

Great channel boys what do yous eat when camping out being restricted on the bikes
Usually carry about 4 days worth of food…mostly tinned stuff for dinner, small snack for lunch (tuna and biscuits) and cereal or beans for breakfast. It’s nice to eat something not in a can when you reach town. Glad you enjoy the Channel content.
thank you
You’re welcome.
