I heard a lot of people saying it is about her friends who passed away, I think because of suicide, which I guess is why she says "are you happy now" I feel like she finally realizes that they did it because they weren't happy, and that she has to accept it, so she goes to the futuristic machine thing to look at her memories with them one last time before erasing them, which would be why we see her tear up a little and then at the end she smiles. I guess then it means the lizard represents her friends. We see it looking at her from above at the beginning, which I guess is pretty self explanatory. Then she goes back to a memory when she is happy and the lizard is around. Then in her dream I guess is another memory, in which she sees the lizard but can't reach for it, and then there's a storm and it disappear. Which could represent how she feels like she wanted to help them but couldn't. (Side note, I love how it's kinda messy and confusing, like one memory is animated a certain way and the other is in a different style and the transitions are different too, like when you dream or try to remember stuff they're kinda blurry or confusing and they get mixed up.) What I think is happening here is that IU lays on the bed and goes into her memories to see her friends that died, one recently and one back in 2017. In the airplane is IU who sees the lizard which represents Jonghyun who was waiting in heaven(airplane in the sky, seems like IU temporarily visited heaven to see them) The girl that jumps off the cliff into the sun is Sulli, she finds Jonghyun who was waiting for her in the afterlife. I think the lizard would be Jonghyun (also nicknamed like a pokemon that looks like a lizard if I'm not wrong) and the girl, Sulli (free spirit like the girl in white), they both being IU's friends and passed away, so she is asking them if they are happy now (they went through some hard moments, the plane turbulences). First, the lizard shows up outside the plane, after that, IU wakes up like it was a nightmare and she really lost her lizard, so it is real she lost her friend and finds out she's in another nightmare even if she's woken up. That would be Sulli looking at her, being all free now. They will meet each other in that happy and orange island where no bad memories come to mind, so if that is a nightmare, she being with them, she doesn't want to wake up, but she does, so she will continue living and keeping them in her most precious memories.

After reading the lyrics and hearing the interpretations of this song, about the song most likely being about Sulli, Jonghyun, and Hara, I cried a lot as I looped through the song. I heard a lot of people saying it is about her friends who passed away, I think because of suicide, which I guess is why she says "are you happy now" I feel like she finally realizes that they did it because they weren't happy, and that she has to accept it, so she goes to the futuristic machine thing to look at her memories with them one last time before erasing them, which would be why we see her tear up a little and then at the end she smiles. I guess then it means the lizard represents her friends. We see it looking at her from above at the beginning, which I guess is pretty self explanatory. Then she goes back to a memory when she is happy and the lizard is around. Then in her dream I guess is another memory, in which she sees the lizard but can't reach for it, and then there's a storm and it disappear. Which could represent how she feels like she wanted to help them but couldn't. (Side note, I love how it's kinda messy and confusing, like one memory is animated a certain way and the other is in a different style and the transitions are different too, like when you dream or try to remember stuff they're kinda blurry or confusing and they get mixed up.) When she wakes up and doesn't find the lizard she goes back to another memory instead of looking for it. I think the lizard would be Jonghyun (also nicknamed like a pokemon that looks like a lizard if I'm not wrong) and the girl, Sulli (free spirit like the girl in white), they both being IU's friends and passed away, so she is asking them if they are happy now (they went through some hard moments, the plane turbulences). First, the lizard shows up outside the plane, after that, IU wakes up like it was a nightmare and she really lost her lizard, so it is real she lost her friend and finds out she's in another nightmare even if she's woken up. That would be Sulli looking at her, being all free now. They will meet each other in that happy and orange island where no bad memories come to mind, so if that is a nightmare, she being with them, she doesn't want to wake up, but she does, so she will continue living and keeping them in her most precious memories.

I think the theory of this song and mv is that IU dreamt of her friends (Sulli, Jonghyun, Hara) who past away due to depression 😢 (I miss them too), in her dream the animated girl (Sulli) is carefree and happy without any worries while riding the dragon (Jonghyun who likes a charmander pokemon so much) They both look happy wherever they are now while IU in reality is missing them but also happy that they are happy in peace. I guess she dedicated this song to them.

the theory I’ve heard most of is that the girl at the end in the white dress represents sulli and goo hara two of ius close friends who passed away and the lizard represents jonghyun who was ALSO one of uis friends who also passed away....the girl in the plane is iu and the person holding the phone is suga..... it could be wrong tho
The lizard and dragon represents Jonghyun (from SHINee) and the girl in white represents Sulli (from f(x)). IU was close with Jonghyun and Sulli they both committed suicide. This song is a tribute to them.

This song is about her friends Jonghyun, Sulli, Hara (idols) who passed away from suicide. The lizard represents Jonghyun because he loved lizards. The girl in the white dress that was flying outside of the plane is Sulli. The girl inside the plane was IU and she was looking at her friends through the window. The guy with the phone I think is Suga but I'm not sure.

Heres my theory: The song is about jonghyun and sulli where sulli is the animated girl and jonghyun is the lizard who later turns into a flying lizard. In the beginning the machine asked if she wanted to save the memories that she loved and enjoyed. throughout the video it shows her smiling and having fun but on outside where she's hooked on the machine she's been there for a long time as her nail polish has been fading away. But get this when she was on the plane and the plane startes to malfunction in the storm or what not, I think that's when she received the news of her friends passing and she didn't know what to do because maybe she was performing at a concert or something to where she really couldn't deal with the situation. But when sulli (the animated girl) runs freely and jumps off the cliff and on to jonghyun (the flying lizard) sulli looks back at IU and IU sees that their okay and happy where their at which causes her to cry and smile. But at the end when she wakes up the audio of her saying (so are you happy now) she smiles at the camera but when the camera comes near she gives a cold glare at the camera with the audio saying (finally happy now) maybe meaning for the haters that caused her friends to do so something heartbreaking. May her friends rest in peace.

You guys really have to look at the lyrics. It’s really sad and touching. It makes me feel like this song is for all the friends she’s lost over the years. A sweet way to say that it’s okay and not to be sad cause they’ll never be forgotten and one day they’ll meet again.

At the start the screen asks if she wants to save her memories and she presses 'yes' so I'm pretty sure that whilst in the machine she is going through her memories. There is also theories/rumours that the lizard/dragon and the animated girl represents her friends who have passed, Jonghyun and Sulli.
From what i understand from the lyrics and video and the title is that iu and suga are 28 and soo iu have been 8 years friends with sulli and jonghyuns birthday is on april 8 so the title is 8 and so the girl in airplane is iu but the dragon is jonghyun thw lizard is the one who turned into the dragon after the thunderstrom and the girl in white animated in sulli and so from the lyrics i get that iu iss saying that everyone left her and all she can look back to is memories and one day hopping she will meet them soon. And she is trying her best to smile and to keep going on but still somewhere deep inside her it hurts. i'm a huge IU fan but i just "smashed" a like for that "a dragon is a flying lisard" , nd yeah 8 is a fliped infenete which refers to her memories (she says it somewhere in the lyrics) AND coz she turned 28 years old this year .

They also say that she has chosen the dragon bc the idol “Kim Jonghyun” who also unfortunately died by suicide, he loved a famous dragon character.

This Song is really a sad song for her friend Jonghyun of Shinee, Sulli of fx and Hara of Kara who passed away. She's really having a hardtime because of the lost of her friend. And I'm really tearing up while listening to this song. I can feel the sadness.
