SONG EXPLANATION: IU lays on the bed and goes into her memories to see her friends that died, one recently and one back in 2017. In the airplane is IU who sees the lizard which represents Jonghyun who was waiting in heaven (airplane in the sky, seems like IU temporarily visited heaven to see them) The girl that jumps off the cliff into the sun is Sulli who went through lots of cyber bullying forcing her to hang herself, she finds Jonghyun who suffered from depression and was waiting for her in the afterlife. The two of them find each other and are finally happy and free because as shown in the airplane when Suga's part starts, it shows that all electric devices have been turned off (Suga is the one holding the phone in the plane) which connects to their social media trauma. They fly past IU who finally gets to see them happy and healthy after not getting to say goodbye, kind of giving her a little bit of closure. Throughout the song IU sings "are you happy now", I think when its said in the beginning it is said to Sulli's haters who pushed her to the edge, asking if they are happy with what they've done to her. While at the end of the song its to her friends because that's what matters the most, that they are happy and at peace. At the end of each chorus she sings the line that says this is a nightmare she does not want to wake up from, where they are so close but so far, unable to touch (like the barrier of the plane between them) she would rather chose to suffer in this nightmare if it meant she could see them. Instead she wakes up and smiles for a second from relief but then the smile becomes pained as she comes back to a world where they don't exist anymore. Many think the song is called "eight" because Jonghyun's birthday was on April 8th and the number looks like the infinity sign representing the love she has for them and will always have forever.

Police say there was no drug abuse or anything of the sort and just keep repeating suicide which is obvious but don't reveal details because topics like this are unfortunately ignored often in Korea as they hide the mental health of their idols.
Many people think she is talking about her dear friends that passed away in the industry. One being Jonghyun from Shinee who passed away in 2017, may he rest in peace ❤️, as well as Goo Hara and Sulli, may they also rest in peace ❤️which she was also great friends with, she even dedicated a song to them in her concert. She has been through a lot and has had to pull her way through her struggles.

I think it's all about our interpretation as listeners. I'd prefer to see it as iu asking her friends are they happy now as they are now free from sufferings. It could also be a question to herself. Is she happy now that she can finally let it go and move on.
That's just speculation. It's also possible that she could be asking her friends if they are happy, now that they are no longer suffering. After all, Sulli was asked what made her happy and her response was that she was never happy. IU has not confirmed that this song is about the suicides of her friends. She has only said that this is where she is at during this time, when she's 28.

As a literature major, I can analyze this as this. It would mean that they used to have fun without worrying about anything. They used to just be who they are without the fear of falling down. Shadows would symbolize “fear”. They did things without fear. The orange sun would symbolize fun, happiness, joy of being in each others’ company. IU were great friends with Sulli, Jonghyun, and Hara. They hung out a lot when they were still alive. They were living happily when they were with each other and they didn’t feel fear when they were together.
In the end animation of the MV, Sulli was the girl in white and Jonghyun was the lizard/dragon. You’ll also notice that they were in 2D (sign of them no longer being in the “real world”), and IU looks back at them on the airplane and her character is 3D (because she’s still alive on this earth)

The "Forever young" is so powerful and emotional, they will forever be young in all our memories. It's strange how it can sound so happy yet so sad at the same time. it makes me rethink the whole stigma around wanting to be "forever young", when in reality, what I interpret from the song, is what "forever young" really means.
I’m glad you left in your genuine reactions. Like, “it’s okay to be vulnerable” is so true and important. I feel like being sad means you’re appreciating the song fully.
Oh, and in a behind the scenes they said that in the MV, IU has forgotten everything and is trying to regain her memories (we assume of her friends). At the end, the memories have made her sad but she’s happy to at least have them.

“Forever young” refers to how her friends died in their youth so their souls will remain forever young. Where everyone else is ageing, growing, changing; the memory of them (as her friends) remains the same: eternally youthful. IMO!
A lot of people say the song was for those that passed without saying goodbye and all that. She was very close friends with jonghyun, sulli, and goo hara. Jonghyun representing the lizard and sulli as the girl in the white dress. in the beginning you can also see a lizard watching over iu which could represent how they'll always watch over her. We already knew this song was going to have very deep lyrics i mean it's IU and yoongi after all. DKDKTV has a video explaining it all!
In the making of the mv video, IU explains that in the mv she goes to get and relive her memories. So that’s what was happening in the beginning. She doesn’t reveal what they are and just says to watch the mv to find out. She also says that the title is Eight because she is 28 and she worked with Yoongi because he is also 28 and they could relate to each other. She says it’s a reflection on her life, as well. Also, when she talks about the orange sun with no shadows, that’s the part of the mv where the second animation happens, I believe. At the end she has retrieved the memories and when she smiles and looks at the camera you can hear the line “So are you happy now?” and this could be her talking to the friends she lost and herself. I think that you guys are right about the forever young line, and when she says forever we young, I think it means that she too is forever young in those memories along with them.
In Suga’s verse he said ‘Forever(or eternity) is like a sand castle’ so I think it means the idea of forever is beautiful but washes away or breaks easily and then ‘goodbye is like a disaster warning/message’ so it’s something sudden and scary. I also think IU is very strong for putting her feelings and pain out there like this. I think Suga is the same type of person (reference his mixtape agustd) and as someone who has had his own struggles with his mental health I think he can sympathize in a very meaningful way. That strength, along with both of them being amazing artists and musical geniuses, meant this duo was for sure going to come out with something incredible and they delivered 150%. I think people are going to relate to a be comforted by this song for a long time kinda like Spring Day.
I cried when I heard this song. Everyone has beautiful memories of people we’ve lost, times that we miss, moments that shine under the orange sun. I think this song is amazing because she is able to covey the beautiful feeling you have when looking back on good memories as well as that melancholy of knowing that that time is over. The last moments of the music video are so impactful because you can see all of those emotions in her smile, all the pain and love she has for the people she’s lost, and then her face drops to the cold stare as she asks the haters “are you happy now?”.

IU's song "Gloomy Clock" is also written by Jonghyun. Jonghyun was an extremely talented musician and wrote and produced his own solo albums, for Shinee and other artists (EXO and Lee Hi). I would love if you took the time to listen to some of his songs as he really was such a huge influence for a lot of artists and was such an amazing person.

JONGHYUN and produced by JONGHYUN & We Freaky. It's "Breathe" that was originally sung by Lee Hi from her second album "Seoulite". Tablo (He was responsible for Lee Hi's comeback) had requested for Jonghyun to write a song for Lee Hi's comeback. The song is always comforts me. Every time when I feel down, feel weak or unable to do something, listening to this song makes me understand someone who I don't know here to hug me, to hear me out and just to support. There was a moment while Lee Hi was singing "Breathe" on music show, suddenly she started crying. I think you should react or at least know about song like this. "Breathe" is my favourite song, cause it helped me a lot and still does.

I relate to this song on so many levels, i feel IU's pain cuz i lost my best friend at the age of 25 and my cousin who was also like a best friend at the age of 26,they both left me without a warning, i hate them for it but still miss them so so so much.
And i lost my dad even though he's still alive, he's there but not there you know?! He's right there but not for me at all, kinda like how yoongi lost his best friend and couldn't recognize him anymore.

She was also very close to Jonghyun and (I think) Goo Hara. Jonghyun wrote her a song called "Gloomy Clock" and IU wrote a song about Sulli called "Peach" and another song based on something Sulli drew (that also imo sounds like it's about Sulli) called "Red Queen." IU puts her life and her feelings into her lyrics, but it must be hard for so many people to be watching her grief and waiting to hear what she has to say about it.
I know "eight" is part of IU's age series (Twenty-Three, Palette) and personally I sometimes think it's because she'd just turned 28 (korean age) and was now officially older than her other "forever young" friends would get to be. (international age, Jonghyun was 27, Sulli was 25, and Hara was 28). I may be projecting tho because when you lose someone the same age/older and you realize one day you're older than they were, it's a shock and you really feel the loss of all the time they could've had.

I really think this one of iu’s message to her friends although she didn’t mention it. It’s like a realization that memories are her only way to see and remember her friends. Jonghyun said her friendship with iu was the most comfortable for him, he felt free to talk about anything and can discuss whether it’s music or not. Sulli was also one of her closest friends, even had an appearance in iu’s drama as support. They were really close and when she lost them, we were so worried about her. But she came back and told us uaenas that she is okay. We just hope she truly is.
People are only saying that the lizard is Suga because quite a few people were disappointed that he wasn't in the video. Another possibility is that he's the man on the plane with IU in the animation that is holding a cell phone with her picture on it. It is far more like that the lizard that turns into a dragon is meant to represent Jonghyun. He was known to be a massive fan of the Pokemon, Charmander. You know, the little lizard that evolves into a great dragon.

Easter eggs/theories (mostly focusing on jonghyun, hara, and sulli tribute theory)
-from a little source apparently there was an mc from music bank I believe or broadcast where they asked sulli about her happiest moments and her reply was : "I was never happy" thus the first lyric is reference to if she is now in a better place
-8 In reference to forever in eternity, April 8 is also jonghyuns bday, and the 8 yrs of friendship as well as 28 being both iu and sugas age as the reminisce memories
-lizard: goo hara had a very unique nickname. It was iguana. U can see the iguana leaving yet being able to crawl into the airplane window to meet one last time before the storm. Goo hara was hanging on but she left us so abruptly wanting to go to the same path as her best friend hara and close friend jonghyun

I think about her sad smile at the end- I saw she was saying one time that she didn’t feel like she had enough time to grieve her friends. I imagine at this point she’s a whole economy and there was pressure on her to keep it moving. But she’s still human, and needs time to heal. So she feels like she needs to smile, and tries but just can’t. That’s how I took it.
Lemme point out few details in the MV.
The lizard looking down on her from the vent in the beginning could mean that "someone" she lost looking down on her from the heaven either it is Sulli, Jong-hyun, Hara, or someone in general. (The fact that the lizard is looking down on her, but she cannot see the lizard from down below.) I wanna take it as a hopeful message that she'll be okay even though she's sad and bittersweet to remember those happy memories.
SUGA was actually in the MV as another passenger in that 3D airplane scene. If you look closely, the other passenger had the album cover for this song on his phone, and also had the ARMY fan ring on. I take it as SUGA accompanying IU to her travel to memories.
The video you're watching has a few mistranslations, too. The correct translation is "dancing BENEATH the orange sun without shadows." "We CUT each other" is also wrong, it is "We pillow our heads on each other, and share stories that are not sad." It's a mistake from homonyms in Korean. "I will not BREAK if nightmare like this" is another mistraslation from homonyms. It's "I will not WAKE if it is nightmare like this."
There's bunch of symbolism in this song/MV, so there's a lot of room for different interpretations, but there's no doubt this is a beautiful song.
After watching the lyric video and listening to the song from the perspective that it is about Sulli and Jonghun and even Goo Hara, I get so emotional and can't help myself from tearing up a little like it just hits so differently when you actually know what they are saying.
Not only did IU lose Jonghyun and Sulli, she also lost her other close friend, Goo Hara. My theory is that the girl in the white dress is Sulli, the dragon is Jonghyun, the lizard is Hara, the guy with the phone is Suga, and the girl on the plane is IU. This order just makes the most sense to me, but believe what you wanna believe

This song made me cry bc there was a point in 8th grade where I was going through a hard time mentally and songs, stories, movies like this make me cry. I’m reminded how much my loved ones would be hurt. It makes me upset at myself for ever thinking those thoughts and getting to a point where I was so close to leaving them.

In suga's line farewell is like a disaster message because we don't know when disaster message will come and we are scared. so suga used disaster message as farewell. and maybe this is about her self about years ago when she was not really popular or maybe it's about their parents because someone asked IU Did you ever lied to your parents. and IU said yes I did my parents asked me do I sleep well and she answered yes even tho she don't sleep well.
When i first heard the song (no lyrics or anything like that), it sounded like it could be listened to during a summer evening, driving on the highway and blasting it while making memories with you friends. I get the impression that the melody of the song is so contrasting to the lyrics happens to be like that to emphasize that yes, some bad things happen but there will always be good memories to remember, memories that wil make us feel better and happier. Idk how to exactly explain it but the melody is like reassuring us that our lives are also filled with happiness, you just gotta dig for it through your memories and travel back in time through them.
She didn’t actually time travel I’m the video, since lost her memory so she went to revive it that was why she was crying, because she started remembering the sad times and then she laughed thinking that they are probably happy now.

I admire how strong iu is, first jonghyun's death then her best friend sulli's death and then her another good friend goo ara's death and she lost all three of her friends to suicide. And another thing iu said in one of her concerts that she could feel sulli and that she's happy and the next day during her concert she got the news about goo ara's death as well which must have been so hard to lose 3 of your close friends to suicide so young. All in one year.. Damn

I cried so SO much the day this song dropped and I started reading all the comments explainig theories about the lyrics and the MV. As you guys said this is really sad, it hurts a lot just to think about it. IU has to be such a strong person being capable to endure the lost of 2 of her best friends, She even keeps living, smiling and inspiring people every day. Bless her.
My opinion: It heals to talk about it, to reach out to others. She is a singer, so were her friends. They lived singing, lets honor them by letting her voice be heard, and her friends story told
IU song is somehow personal but also Universal, something that a lot of people can relate to.
I've been dealing with anxiety and depression, people letting me down and I'm letting myself down for a long time,,, I'm learning how to love who I am for who I am.. And this song is just something to reminde me that I'll never give up on myself bc of the people I love and because I am worth it..

This is a truly bittersweet song. IU actually lost 3 friends & co-idols to suicide in the last couple years. This is her way of healing & moving on. I think the lizard is Go Hara (because her nickname is iguana), and the dragon is Jonghyun (because his nickname is charmander) and the girl is Sulli. IU lost three close friends for the same reason, depression.
My heart hurts when I remember Jonghyun, this also reminds me of Suga's depression. ARMY have many theories about what Suga said to the doctor in his song.
The girl in white is GO HARA and SULLI RIP and IU in white represents them, and the lizard is Jonghyun and at the end when the white girl and lizard meet its all of her friends mentioned above finally leaving and IU in the plane is watching them sad but happy that they are together moreover her plane flies in the direction opposite to the dragon and girl representing that even after all this she is still moving on.

In the end she goes through 3 phases. She is confused first, then happy and angry after. She is asking her friends if they are happy and the 3rd time she is asking the trolls if they are happy about the results. Dk news explains it really well.
The lizard is Jonghuyn and the girl with the white dress is Sulli and when the girl with the white dress (sulli) jumps from the cliff she lands on the lizard which is jonghuyn which represents that they are together in heaven.
