I had severe sunburns, blisters on my shoulders and all, when I was 7-8 years old. This is was in the early 1970s. My mom didn't realize how fair my skin was and how prolonged exposure (just 2-3 hours) could cause such damage. I was diagnosed at age 40 with Stage III Melanoma, as I had a large, purplish mole on my lower back. I already had large moles all over my body, so I didn't think much of it. 'I'll get it removed when it gets bigger', I told myself. One day it started bleeding. Now I'm 44 and have Stage IV melanoma in remission after Opdivo treatment. I never used tanning beds, and I rarely went outside in the sun, as the memory of painful sunburns left me detesting hot weather. I never cared for having a 'healthy tan'. I'm still confused how I got it on my back, as I hadn't had my shirt off in the sun for almost 10 years prior to diagnosis. Saying it is 'preventable' is an insult to some. I never asked for it. I was never in the sun, sunbathing, or visiting tanning beds. I wore a ton of sunscreen every time I was outdoors for long periods of time. Saying it is "preventative" is like saying "You deserve it". It pisses me off.
