Always some erudite footnote(s) to art history and the artists who intrigue us all. Watching these I wonder if I've missed my true calling. A glass of champagne wouldn't come amiss.
Thank you for the helpful background material on Watteau and his world. It would have been helpful if you had drawn conclusions as to why Watteau was not collected by Mr. Frick, given that, at least today, Watteau is generally considered an even greater artist than either Fragonard or Boucher, although both of them are first rank decorators from that general period known in the history of art as the Rococo. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that Mr. Frick preferred larger-format paintings to works in miniature. A pity in a way, as there have been significant Watteaus offered for sale internationally during Mr. Frick's lifetime as well as in the years which followed. Opportunities missed, in my somewhat misanthropic opinion.
How do you get from the knowledge that the gates of the walls of Valenciennes no longer exist to the conclusion that the painting is a work of fiction? Was it Watteau's habit to name pictures after places then in existence and accessible and not depict those places?
DEAR.Mr Salamon i have to tell the truth l like many paintings from Wattau born in Valencie but the suject of this as militaries is nor much my taste. It can bee of course from paint of view an exelent capolavoro.cia

Very interesting. I never associated Watteau with paintings of the military. This is a new and unexpected dimension to my understanding of his work.
Thank you so much...
