@@DrWhom Well, everything is relative. I used to read music flawless when I was younger playing violin, then I stopped doing it for a lot of years reading drums instead and forgot everything. THIS 20min isch just gave me all those years back. Thanks Rick!

Probably not. This shit's confusing. I barely made it thru algebra I in HS
@Dex Vox it's only confusing if you try to understand it all at once. Music theory is a language, so you have to take baby steps first. If you don't understand something, go back to the basics until you do.
As for remembering the sharps through the clock I found that from key of g its 6th gets a sharp and it is kept to the next key so example is g,a,b,c,d,e#,f,g then key of d is d,e#,f,g,a,b#, c ,d then in key of e is same principle keep the previous keys sharp and add sharp to its 6th note. I hope that was expressed coherently.
It's good hearing this teaching. I've used so much of it over the years. I've taught piano and have always stressed the circle of 5ths. I've taught my students that to find out the key fro the key signature, in sharps, the last sharp will be 1/2 step from the key. F# is the last in G; D# is the last sharp in E. In flats, the next to the last flat is the name of the key. In two flats, Bb and Eb the key is Bb/ Bb, Eb, Ab, DB, and Gb - the key is Db. So incredible how it works. Thanks again, Rick. You rock!

haha I know, right?? Actually, I could follow most of this video, but I played violin for 8 years, and guitar for like 20. Most of his videos I get lost in the first couple minutes haha

He is running through this. Best you look for pencil and paper (remember those?) and copy the charts, stop the video, play the chords, continue the video.

I've watched your other videos like this, this is absolutely your most clear concise version, your best work for beginners imo.
Plus I started painting recently and I never had a real understanding of the context of the circle of fifths but it exactly maps on to literal color-mixing, darks and brights, warm and cool etc.

Great lesson Rick. Thank you so much. After several years of playing, I've just recently started to study the Circle of 5th's and theory. I'm loving it. My very first lesson was similar to yours, although instead of being taught the circle of fifths to figure out the notes of each key, I was told to remember the major interval progression of whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole half. Then taught that the 1, 4, 5 were Major and 2,3,6 minor. I'm very glad I leaned those things so early! Its very cool learning about parallel chords and how they are used in a composition. So glad I'm know learning about more theory. Thanks for sharing so much. Your knowledge and background is amazing and inspiring!!!

Your board work gave me the logic of what I’d used up to a point Innately via self-taught “monkey see, monkey do” learning via figuring out and playing along with recordings. Now I have a more expanded logic set. Really a good job of explaining. Saving this one. The math of music.
I have found the circle of 5ths (and 4ths) invaluable in learning/understanding so much of the theory of music. Truly, I feel it is invaluable. I love the way Rick is thinking ahead of what he is writing - we all do it :) Oh, and I bought the package, so thank you Rick, for some quality content

3:03 Blue + Yellow pigment yields the color green
Yellow paint reflects most light at long wavelengths and absorbs light at short wavelengths. Because blue paint and yellow paint both reflect middle (green appearing) wavelengths when blue and yellow paint are mixed together, the mixture appears green
I absolutely love songs that use the Maj 3 chord. Ophelia(the Band), Deal(Jerry Garcia) for example. The major third of the Maj 3 chord is a flat 2 to the tonic, so it makes for some colorful and chromatic tones for soloing over. Lots of fun. Thanks for all the great content!
This is the best lessons in theory that I ever got so far. Maybe after playing guitar for some years now I'm a little bit more relaxed after I realized that I could not learn to play like my heroes, because I'm too old to become that good but I found my place in doing the music. This lesson gave me the Information for memorizing the circle of fifth with all the sharps and flats during the first view. It is amazing how easy it was and how easy to build every scale from there. And as a benefit I got the second dominant on top. Great lesson, it opens, no it blew my mind.

Thank you so much. I wrote a song and couldn't figure out why an F sharp major chord worked so well in a progression in D major to the point where F# minor didn't sound right...now I know it's the V of vi and the progression goes from G to F sharp. You're awesome for all you do!

I rang the bell. I need to re-watch this several times as it's a little over my head. I'm hoping to grasp it at some point. I taught myself how to play guitar by copying finger positions for chords. After learning to play the chords, I started to recognize which songs used them. I don't even know the name of the chords I'm playing, but somehow managed to learn enough chords to play entire classic rock songs.

Hint: secondary chords are a fifth apart, so are guitar strings! The secondary chord will be the note directly above (save for the second string).

Purple...thank you so much for this. I took music theory loooong ago in high school and we never made it past the linear roman numeral (nashville) setting. They started doing perfect 4ths and 5ths then the semester would end. We never went over this part of it. So thank you, Mr Beato. As a wanna be songwriter, this helps diversify my palette of colors.

Most of Rick's videos are so hard to understand, because the info is SO complex and I think he doesn't realize how much he's throwing out there haha. I'm in the middle of his book right now, and even that is hard to keep up with him, at times. But this video is absolute GOLD. He cleared up a few things I'd always wondered about for years.
