  • This short but informative documentary explores the critical year of 1910 in British political history. The two elections of that year paved the way for a modern democracy in the UK. This was the "Peers versus the People" campaign, and the film will be very useful for students of the period and the politics. Uploaded for educational purposes only.

      do you have a documentary by any chance of the history of the Liberal Party of England and when it dissolved or became an extremely minor party and later reemerged as the Liberal Democrats when the Liberals and SDP merged to become the Liberal Democrats?

    Very interesting. Having recently read biographies of Gladstone, Asquith, Bonar Law and Lloyd George I find this a fascinating period in British history.
    Shame there wasn't any more footage on the actual participants themselves. Liked the reference to the Wedgewood-Benn dynasty coming up to date!

    Rejecting the Budget er try 11 November 1975 in Australia. There was gridlock between the Senate (the red house) and House of Reps (the green house) The duly elected Labor government (1972 and 74) was dismissed by the Queen's representative the Governor General Sir John Kerr.. A date that still simmers in the hearts of many who were there.

      +Bill S. Thank you very much, Bill!. However, please remember that I should receive no credit for these works. I have used them for many years with my History students, and it occurred to me a few years ago that others around the world might find them useful. All of the films are unmonetised and any advertising that appears is beyond my control. I also try very hard not to infringe copyright when I upload them. There are still some good films in my collection that I would like to share, so please stay in touch. Many thanks again for your kind words - regards, Alan.

    Thanks Alan for the many interesting and educational videos you provide for students on this channel, including this in-depth analysis of an extremely fraught time in British politics. What really stands out is the different makeup of society in this era e.g. no votes for women.

    Fascinating documentary. It really brings the events of 1910 alive. Here we are a century later, so much has changed yet so much has stayed the same!

    A beautiful cameo of British politics . It's easy to forget how little democracy existed in Britain pre WW1 . I know of the scandal of selling peerages that LLoyd George was involved . That doesn't change the fact he was the most radical cabinet minister of his day . Maybe the scandals only came to light to control him . Yet more than 100 years on the House of Lords is still in need of reform or maybe should be demolished .

      Sloth from The Goonies I agree that it should be retained but democratically elected, because even as it is, they have in the recent past, rejected some of the loonier policies/laws that BLIAR/BROWN tried to enforce ---even if in some cases, they merely delayed them. That second layer CAN be to OUR advantage.

      Philip Croft An elected house will give the public more ability to scrutinise government legislation. As it is now, idiotic laws stealthily glide through Parliament before the Government's friends in the upper house ensure that the legislation passes without any drama.

      Sloth from The Goonies The problem with an elected second chamber would be of course duplicated mandates, there is a good case for a group of Parliamentarians who while unable to block the will of the elected house can review unheeded by the electrical timetable. I

    All the Democracies represent all sections of the community except the working class,which is 90% of the population,so not a lot of change in a 100 years Bourgeiosie rule OK!

      The peers thought that once the working class got the vote they would simply tax all their wealth away. What stopped them for over 100 years?

    • @Lemma01
      @Lemma01 5 років тому +2

      Just in case that was meant to be taken (even slightly) seriously, take a look at how the UK society sees itself: 15% basic working class, 20% skilled working class, 8% pensioners/not working; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NRS_social_grade
      So even if they all voted, and they all voted for a socialist party (and they don't), they are a minority. That explains your 'Bourgeiosie rule - the 'working classes' keep migrating into the wealthier classes. Probably not entirely a bad thing...?
