  • It's inevitable that in every MMO out there you'll find people you like and dislike. And if you get to be known you'll have the inevitable hater. We already saw one in action last game which lacking in ability to sink my ship resorted to abuse and insults. Time to settle scores...but never at the cost of what's needed to win the battle.
    Enjoy!

    My favourite bit is when you insult bop by calling him bob... really sticking that knife in, lol

  • @KomradeCPU

    that backwards maneuvering.. now that was impressive. That's really something that would have cost me precious seconds to plan and perform (you have to admit, it's pretty confusing to the brain, all that reverse ruddering, taking in considerating the direction of the wind for manual sailing and so forth), which would probably have gave the enemy a nice ranking shoot on my ass.
    And please, keep hitting on Bob, I laugh every time. The guy represent all the vileness and lack of sportsmanship on computer gaming nowadays.
    Keep up with the good work.

      ramjb wowowow, mate where did you get the idea that I hated you? We have a difference of opinion of tactics, that doesn't meant that I have anything against you as a player or more importantly a person. I sincerely apologize if you actually thought I had anything against you as a person or youtuber. This battle that we played in this video was probably one of my all time FAVOURITE battles I have had in this game, and it was interesting trying to fight someone who I knew was planning things from the start. The early match was awesome as you had the wind and I had to do everything I could to keep my guys out of your range and win the initial engagement. In the end, I tried a tactic that was risky and didn't work, but I believed that I had already lost our duel, so I thought it would give my team the best chance. But I enjoyed the game. As for the conversation in the other video, mate I was just saying that I tend to always focus frigates first when they are guarding a rate ship, as a good player in a frigate has the potential of ruining any plan or stern camp. You ARE a good player, and it isn't so much about the damage you can do, its about the disruption you can cause to a plan or organisation. I invite you to come on teamspeak sometime (I'll PM you if you are interested and i'll give you the details) and have a conversation on tactics and have a few matches together. We are all fans of yours on TS, and I would also get a chance sort out the misunderstanding.

    Ram - I know nothing about this game. Saw it on Steam, decided to check out gameplay, you were the first video....looked incredibly boring (not my cup of tea, I'm sure it's a great game) but for whatever reason I stayed and started reading your on screen text. I will never play this game but holy smokes it was incredible/interesting watching you play!!!! Long winded way of asking... how the heck do you know so much about naval battles?

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb  8 років тому +5

      +glennjdowns Reading a lot. Passion about history. Reading even more. Being interested in how things work from the phisical/mechanical point of view. Reading some more. And then even some more passion about history ;).
      Oh and did I mention "Reading A LOT"?. yeah, that too :D
      That pretty much sums it up, hihihihi ;)

    • @MajCyric
      @MajCyric 8 років тому +1

      +glennjdowns Clearly a 1st rate isn't your cup of tea... but i'm pretty sure if you played as a Sloop or a Brig which is much faster, the "action" would be a bit "faster" paced for you....
      But then perhaps the Age of Sail warfare era isn't your cup of tea at all, with weapons being single shot requiring reloading time... which i'd also guess that Mount & Blade: Napoleonic Wars Siege Battle Multiplayer isn't either then? (another great game)
      Myself though I love the 1750-1830 era warfare, and wooden ships which can take a pounding and keep on fighting...

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb  9 років тому +7

      Feeding the troll would've been opening up on him when I shouldn't. This video (as every one I put up) tries to convey a lesson: you'll know people you like more or less in the enemy team in Naval Action. People you dislike are a powerful distraction and a magnet for mistakes: If you start trying to go for the people you personally dislike instead of focusing in what you need to do in battle, you're going to lose games. Conversely, if you do stuff right and fire on who you must fire and not on who you WANT to fire, you'll eventually have your chance to get satisfaction and shoot him to smithereens. If you fall for the temptation of shooting when you shouldn't, however, you'll be in trouble.
      On top of that this is not feeding the troll, this is sinking him.

    • @ebigunso
      @ebigunso 9 років тому +1

      ramjb
      Thats not what he tried to say, Ram. It might pose a lesson for whoever you are trying to teach, but that doesen't help you get rid of trolls going over you.
      The kind of trolls don't even try to learn, watching him being spotlighted like this would probably make him feel more famous and stupidly enough think he will be spotlighted more if he shoots you more, or the sorts.
      I don't necceceary like labling people as dumbasses but I couldn't help it in this case.
      I won't stop you if teaching lessons to everyone matters more than getting rid of your troubles, I just don't want you to get frustrated too much because of him.

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb  9 років тому

      ebigunso
      I know what he tried to say and I know what you're trying to say. I'm not feeding any troll, I'm showcasing how letting petty considerations cloud your judgement in target selection when playing Naval Action can have dismal consequences for the outcome of the battle. I don't give a damn about the dude I'm putting as an instance of a guy I dislike. I do indeed dislike him for obvious reasons, but I don't give a damn about him (proven by the fact that I only fired at him when it was the smart thing to do, not when it was easy).
      Also if the dude gets a kick of being showcased in youtube as an insulting dumbass and a skilless player who falls for the first trap I lay in front of him, all the better for him. I seriously don't give a flying eff about him, and this video is NOT about him, but about a very common scenario: the community is not that big, we see the same names a lot in battles and some of them we end up disliking for whatever reason. That's fine and normal -as long as things remain civil - but it should not mean that when you see those names you dislike in battle you should make a mission in life to kill them first. Kill them when it's smart to kill them. Just as with any other player in the game. Otherwise you might lose battles you would have won had it not been for your personal feuds that noone in your team has to carry the weight of.
      That's the lesson, that's the reason of the video, and that's why the title says "settling scores". I settled them...when I had to. Not before ;).

    • @ebigunso
      @ebigunso 9 років тому

      ok so you think teaching others using the senario weighs more than keeping yourself safe from those dumbass attacks, if thats your decision I'll respect that.
      Just hope you don't get too frustrated by the consequences.
      After all, it's not fun watching you getting frustrated too much, although I get why and I respect that.

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb  9 років тому

      ebigunso
      which consequences? everyone primarying me even while it's dumb to do so?. Well that already happens. Can't get worse. In fact my only hope for it to get better is for people to learn proper tactics. Exactly what this video (and all the ones I put up) is about :).

    I notice on alot of NA replays people don't bother with bow and stern shots in alot of cases, are they that ineffective or is it just too much info to balance in a battle? Notice alot of what seems to be tunnel vision as well, firing starboard guns at a target but ignoring small ship to port for two or 3 volleys. Saving reload?

    Hey Ram, very good move defending yourself from the 2 frigates. What would have been the correct move for them? To slow down and stall in your stern? then you could keep turning with your sails to lead them into your gunarc... I would like to see how this SoL sterncamping is done properly... and against a smart SoL, putting the kind of tricks and moves you just did in the video... is it possible? Also, once the stern armor is empty, what is best, to keep shooting double, or to start shooting grapeshot to bring his crew to 0? I recently unlocked the Surprise and i have been in this situation already twice, but failed utterly in it... un par de consejos me podrían ayudar :)

    • @LeeNTien
      @LeeNTien 9 років тому

      Ram himself made a video about doing it properly. A while back.

    • @ecophreak1
      @ecophreak1 9 років тому

      Not stall, just slow down before you pass, keep a good distance (a shiplength or more) then cut back and as soon as your bow faces the ship, raise full sails into the turn, although in survival mode (as these frigates undoubtedly were) it's very hard if not impossible against a good captain, ideally you want to be in sailing mode.

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb  9 років тому +3

      SteelZenith Against a well driven 1st rate with a good crew complement (and not the small cadre I had left in the end stages of this battle) it's impossible to keep a prolonged sterncamp. Once he positions upwind from you your chances to come in for a rear shot are reduced to nothing and you'll be open for being shot at. Sterncamping against good players has a time limit, which is how long it takes for the 1st rate to set himself in the proper position to deny you the return move towards his rear. From then on, it's game over.
      I didn't go that route because I had very small crew numbers. Setting myself upwind at slow speed might have opened a window for boarding. And I didn't want to give the enemy that chance for they had a realistic chance to win in that situation. So instead I tried to fool them to overshot. Worked well enough :).

    • @Lemard77
      @Lemard77 9 років тому

      ramjb thanks, so against a good SoL there isn't much one can do :( and what about double vs grapeshot on his empty stern, which one is the more recommended?

    I am SO confused on how the crew battles work.. Is it like rock paper scissors?

    • @blshouse
      @blshouse 9 років тому

      Yes, exactly that. Fire beats Defend, Defend beats Attack, and Attack beats Fire. Both sides lose crew every round, but the one who loses the round takes significantly more casualties.

    • @ramjb
      @ramjb  9 років тому

      Bryan Shouse
      Not really. Each round kills are calculated based on correlation of forces. Winner of the round gets a better-than-average result for the force correlation, which might translate into "significantly more casualties"...or not. Just watch that Surprise boarding. I lost the initial round, I guess you wouldn't say I took "significantly more casualties" than him, would you? ;).
      Boarding is in very initial crude status and will be subjected to a full revamp down the line. The Rock-paper-scissor mechanic will be the base of it, but there will be more options to choose from, and the mechanics and outcomes will probably be calculated differently. Oh, and crew boarding and hand to hand fighting skill will have a pretty big influence too.

      It is as exciting as it looks, slow paced combat, where your planning of your maneouvres matter a lot more than your reflexes. A bit slow to start with the beginner ship (~2 days playing to get a brig or a snow), which is complained about a lot, but I found the smallest ships just as enjoyable as frigates. Look for some more videos, or streams, to see how the open world gameplay is (this video was a battle instance, like when you attack an other lone ship, or take a mission)
