The funny thing is, ,,thrust only spear" is one of easiest weapons to be electrified similarly to epee (thrust power check). In fact, it has already been done; we can see Chinese spear tournaments with such weapons. We could even electrify both ends of the weapon!
Funny enough it's true! I admit for many aspects I find electrification not really appealing for the majority of weapons. Maybe with spear it would be interesting, even if I am an olf-fashioned kind of guy! Ahah!
@@FedericoMalagutti we don't have technology to do it reasonably for cutting weapons, but for thrust-only, epee technology is almost perfect simulation.
Spear lightly french kisses someone's elbow whilst he's grabbing it; point to the guy who was losing the spear and about to get stabbed in the face.
Judges are sexy and help keep the fights grounded in martiallity, this electrification obsession is not healthy :D
There's literally a coach/instructor/writer who does both hema and olympic who will go on hour long rants about spear being epee lmao
Ps Electrification killed olympic saber (and god bless it for that, now we have a ton of german, italian and French military sabrists with amazing sense of distance and tempo)

It's is hard to write tho. Try do some practice yourself is good for visualization and to write it later

Does he use the spear for more than advantage or does it have to to with character? Iike is he a soldier?
@@swiftblade862 he specializes in hunting an invasive species that is a hybrid insect-fungus and very resilient. Using a boar spear means he can hold his target back and keep it from closing on him.

One thing I find really interesting here is how closely this matches my personal spearfighting experience. I personally fight more like grey, pretty linear, range control emphasis, only do twirls if someone manages to rush me, even then try to just retract the tip first. In my experience, and in this video, this is the optimal way to fight with a spear if no armor more protective than a gambeson is involved.
Blue, on the other hand, is doing what at first glance seem to be fancy twirls, but at second glance, those are attempts to close the distance and gain advantage there, a fighting style that is almost a middle point between what grey is doing and how one would use a pollaxe. I don't think it's necessarily wrong, but rather that it is more appropriate way of fighting when you have something more than a padded armor - a chain mail or a brigandine perhaps - that lets you shrug off a lot of the fast, light pokes and either close in through them or force your opponent to use more powerful and slower thrusts.
Also, are those blunted steel spearheads? If so, don't try this at home, kids. Or even at competitive tournaments, for that matter.
Yeah, blunt spear are definitely dangerous. Me and Nicola know each other and both have enough experience to make it “safe-ish” but we still had minor injuries during the filming.
@@FedericoMalagutti Yeah, there's a very good reason why any spearman is under much heavier scrutiny than a sword-and-boarder in any given re-enactment battle. No amount of chain mail is gonna protect you from getting your ribs broken if you catch a two-handed thrust, especially if you didn't see it coming.
Italian spearmanship is my favorite spearmanship in HEMA🙂
I've used drone footage for analysis before. It is pretty awesome for that giving you another view. I liked how you incorporated that viewpoint here.

Why don't you use daggers? In our club we came up with the idea that in a 1:1 fight, a spearman must have a dagger behind his belt for the option of going into close combat. There are several such cases on the video: one of the fighters breaks the distance and grabs the opponent's spear with his hand. In our case, it continued with the variant "lets go of his own spear, grabs a knife and defeat the opponent"
Awesome footage! Brave of you both to fence with steel spearheads, but if you both have good control and trust of each other (you seem to) I don't see why not.

@@FedericoMalagutti Yeah, it would probably be best to do it as a choregraphed video rather than actual sparring. Perhaps you could do a sparring session and turn the action into a choreography drill, where you then repeat it in period kit so that you know that you both will be safe from the specific movements used?

These look like blunted metal spearheads; who is the maker? I love spear and am always on the lookout for good trainers 😂

Actually if you want to go for a safe trainer this is the worst choice ever, me and Nicola (the other Fencer) are both used to fence spear and we know each other pretty well, but we anyway had a couple of minor injuries while shooting the video because blunt spears are damn dangerous ahah!
So, the best choices in my opinion are:
1 - Rubber spear tips (You find them in different Shops, like Fais D'armes)
2 - Kvetun Steel Spears. This trainers are awesome, unluckily I still don't own them, but I've seen them in action and they are reeeeeaally safe while being steel at the same time. They represent a Partisan in theory, but they are good to train spear, chiavarina and other things.
@@FedericoMalagutti thanks. We have the rubber points. I just hoped these metal ones are less floppy and still quite safe for easy sparring.
What we actually want is some metal speartip with a small 1cm ball on the tip and a spring in the spearhead that makes the spear tip extended, while it can shorten (with mild resistance) on a stab, all the while being sturdy and without sharp edges. 😅
Much appreciated, I’ve used a lot of different synthetics and like the Arcem partisan heads a lot, but unfortunately they are prone to snapping as they are a hard plastic and fatigue easily. One day I’ll get a couple of kvetun partisans 🥲 have you tried the purpleheart armory spearheads?

nice video. although it reminds me painfully that no matter the amount of skill, martial arts sparring is just impossible to not look slightly silly, since it is just a far too dangerous activity for going all-out. i wonder if you have looked into many drills for more than one practitioner which attempt to mitigate the danger and make the time spent on the practice more beneficial.
I honestly wasn’t holding back that much, even considering the completely unsafe simulators. I personally think that a fight simulation (sparring) is the best way to spend time in terms of training, of course other things are needed too.
What you realize when you actually start sparring is that, against a somewhat decent opponent, going all out will lose you the match very fast. Someone who overcommits/overextends or goes very hard is easier to redirect into a position where they aren't a threat. It also wastes a lot of energy which is very valuable in a sparring match.
The easiest comparison to make is epee fencing where you know people aren't holding back. You will notice that up until that one perfect moment both fencers are very withholding, mostly doing rash movements to provoke a reaction.
It only looks silly because we are used to watching carefully choreographed stuff, but for those that do fence the perspective flips and choreographed stuff start to look silly.

May I ask what kind of spearhead you are using? I am looking for a workable spearhead that is safe to train with in Harnischfechten, but also doesn't look like HEMA plastic equipment. Something authentic.
@@WoofyMcDoodle unluckily I don’t know the makers of this spearheads. Anyway they are completely unsafe, in fact we injured ourselves a couple of times while shooting this video. We wanted to make it with steel head because it’s cool, but I would never spar regularly with them.
I’m armor is different, they would be more than ok in that context.
@@FedericoMalagutti oh lol understandable. I know that Kvetun does a spearhead, but its 85cm long so more like a shortsword on a stick.
