This is such great timing for me, I was just getting my kids debit cards back on track this last weekend! We use Greenlight and it’s worked well for us. The monthly fee comes out of the “parent’s wallet” and not the kids accounts. If there isn’t enough to cover it will come out of my checking account that is attached to Greenlight. But I love the idea of no fees through Capital One. Thanks for showing these options! And I totally understand the mama heartache of them growing up too fast. It’s so hard!
I work at a Credit Union. Most credit unions offer free checking and savings for teenagers 12+. I like that I can monitor, transfer or deposit all from my own account. I agree Miko, 12-17 kids should focus on what credit/debit from your checking in and how to save money and create healthy habits of spending… then 16+ how to build and maintain credit as well as investments. You doing a great job🤗 but yes they need the experience eventually and we need to step back and see how they do on their own or what habits needs to be worked on.
My daughter started with the chase. It was great to have a high school account and she moved to college account no fees. It’s great because she is building a relationship with the bank. Plus I have access to the account as well.
This is random but I just want to let you know I really enjoy reading your newsletters when I check my emails. It really helps me be cautious of my spending ❤
Great video. Especially for those young moms. Now I am a great grandmother. I am still debating about to give my grandchildren a card. Because I spend a lot of money on them. Sad to say I am starting over again. To budgeting. But I do love your logic and trying to stay on track. Love your morning routine. I do not miss a morning of you videos. I look forward everyday to them and when your on vacation i watch the older ones. Thank you
I have Capitol one online checking/savings. I love it you can open as many accounts as you want and there are no fees for anything and adding money is so easy😊
Here in France it is very popular. In my bank, I can set up a debit card for a child (I don’t remember the minimum age) but it’s free of charge. No withdrawn possibilty and the parents can see all the transactions. The kid has access to an app where she/he can see all his/her transactions too.
Miko, this is so cool. I always have a difficult time understanding the ins and outs of credit cards and how to choose a good credit card. Like APR, rewards, how to know how those things work like the basics of having a credit dard. Do you have an article blog about this? A video about this would be cool like you did with the Green Light Card vs. Capital Ones Teen Card. And what a statement we all have heard makes me feel like a Mom hearing my Mom friend say, "Money doesn't grow on trees." And the subject of the discussion is your son James and finances. ❤😊❤
Thank you for this information Miko! It was super helpful! I have a 14 year old and he asked me for a debit card. I haven’t gotten one for him but after seeing this information I think I’m going to get the Capital One Teen debit card. Thank you!!!!
This is cool, Miko! All my kids had a part-time summer job when they were 14 or 15. I opened a parent/child no-fee checking and savings account with them and helped them learn to manage their own money. An added plus was that family can send them money too. ❤ My son is 25, and to this day, he's granted me access so that we can send money between accounts if either of us needed a little something until payday. This is how we pay each other back for dinners out. He also lets me know that an odd large purchase isn't fraud it was him. Lol 💙💜💙 This was instrumental to him saving $13,000 within 3 years and buying his first home at 21 years old. He's a GREAT saver!! 🎉 It's almost 4 years later, and he's gearing up to buy his 2nd home and rent the 1st one out. He's currently 2 blocks away from 2 schools and wants to list it for a lower income family. It's gonna rent fast! ❤❤
Great video. I also started my son with a debit card at about 13 ( I used USAA). It goes by so fast, but I felt it was time for him to learn about money and gauge how he handles money. I could also invest in a mutual fund (he did not know about this until 18). Fast forward, to 25, and to my great surprise, he is a budget nerd. Following Dave Ramsey, he is on Step 4. Who knew?!?! 🤣❤

My daughter has the Capital One Teen card and she loves it. She is 12.
I opened teen money accounts for two of my daughters. It worked well.

Great job Momma!!! Your reasons for holding off on the credit card are sound and reasonable. You are teaching good skills and character building.
