- Use shape layers to create custom transitions and save them as animation presets so you can use it any time! In this tutorial, you'll also learn how to get multiple transitions out of only one shape layer transition. Understanding these basic shape layer tools opens up a world of possibilities, while also saving a ton of time, improving your workflow, and adding more techniques to your motion graphic arsenal.
This method of creating transitions is useful if you tend to use transitions on a regular basis, which is something that most motion graphic designers do, especially for infographics, explainer videos, corporate videos, pretty much anything. Once you create these transitions, you will always have them and they will be completely customizable.
Learn an invaluable design skill in less than 7 minutes! Whether you're a beginner or an advanced motion graphics designer, these tutorials are designed to supplement designers at any level.

thanks for the great efforts
Hi ! The way you explain it is absolutely amazing! Thank u so much for this detailed great tutorial! Can you advise is there is any way I can somehow clip those moving rectangles to my stroke of text? So that I have just a black background, text logo with just a stroke and he rectangles are clipped to text stroke so that they sort of move within the stroke? Can it be done ? :)
Awesome tutorial! you saved my day!!! Thanks!!
Moi MV Thanks for watching. Stay tuned! I have a big announcement coming to soon.
Great video. Subscribed. What is the best way of exporting these? like when I export it now to premier pro I am still stuck with the black which I don't want? How do I just get the colours as a transition from one scene to another?
Around 1:17 when you move the rectangle, on mine, it insists on using the COLOR 1 Transform property rather than the RECTANGLE PATH 1 Transform property. I can manipulate the RECTANGLE PATH 1 position by using the slider or by typing in numbers, but not by dragging the shape itself across the canvas. Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?
Super explain and fully use full video for me thank you so much Sir
I loved your video. Efficient, Perfect!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks!
this was super easy to understand. Thank you so much

So can you take this preset and bring it into premiere pro? Sorry I’m still pretty new to AE
How do you change the name of the group? I can only change the layer name...

Thanks man. Great tip.
As a shape preset can I link this to a series of images I want to use the effect on? i.e can I parent the preset somehow to a series of images?
I'm not sure I understand the question 100%. Maybe this will help. The preset is relative to the shape layer group properties. If the keyframes are on the shape layer itself (i.e., position, scale, rotation, opacity, anchor point), then you could link an image to that shape layer. However, if the keyframes are relative to group properties (i.e., position and scale of a rectangle or circle within a group), the image would not be able to be link because the image itself doesn't have anything to recognize. Does this help?
great tutorial
Thanks for watching!
This shit came in handy. Bless you!
Glad I could help!
Like first, and then watch :)
waaaw, slide show and a looot of info like always.
You can make tutorials in School motion channel, this way more people gone a know you.
By the way, Thanks you so much brother for the projects files.
Salam.
I appreciate the kind words. Thanks so much for watching!
Is there a way to get a drop shadow in between the colored layers?
brian lippert not unless each shape layer is on a separate layer which wouldn’t allow you to save as a preset. You could add black layers in between the current layers and lower the opacity to fake a drop shadow.
Thanks
Too fast I can't add group as there's no group menu in the layers. Sorry I cant continue
When I change the color of my new group, it changes the color of the previous group as well. Any suggestions?
Make sure each group has its own fills and strokes and that there are no fills or strokes OUTSIDE of each group. Think of the group as its own container, so if there is a fill or stroke that's below any groups, it will override whatever is inside each group. Does that make sense? Let me know how it goes!
It worked! I was stressing out, thanks for the great tutorial
i am not getting handle in graph editor. using cc 19. how to solve this?
Once you’re in the graph editor, look for the icons at the bottom of the screen. The second icon in (next to the eyeball) is the one you want to click. Choose “edit speed graph” and you should get handles. Let me know if that works.
@@7MinuteAETutorials Yeppieee, It works, Thank you so much.
0:30 how do you add a group?
You can add a group by clicking on this icon ▶️ next to contents
if i want to use it in my videos , i have to save it as what??
You need to save shape layer contents as an Animation Preset. It will save to your User Presets and then show up in your Effects and Presets search. To save the contents, you need to highlight the groups in the shape layer. If you want, you can also highlight the transform properties (position, scale, rotation, etc.) and it will save those elements as well.
Let me know if this helped.
Save as ANIMATION PRESET, which is under the ANIMATION tab
Do I need to create this effect and then export to premiere pro to use it?
Joshua Looi You can export from AE on an alpha channel and use it in Premiere. You can also use it inside of after effects if you’re creating your project there.
@@7MinuteAETutorials ohh ok. Thanks you.
Great video! I’ve Recently become a user of AE. But for some odd reason the program will not allow me to save any presets at all. I’ve tried so many different variations and it just won’t let me save any presets. Is there anyway you can help me out or guide me. I’d greatly appreciate it thanks.
If you click the property you want to save as a preset, then go to. ANIMATION/SAVE ANIMAITON PRESET it should go to your Documents/Adobe/After Effects (version)/User Presets. You may not have a folder there until you save your first preset. Give that a try and let me know if it works
@@7MinuteAETutorials Thanks for the quick reply! Just finished making my morning coffee. Going to fire up the PC and give it a go. I will let you know shortly. 👍
@@7MinuteAETutorials Okay then. It worked. I’m able to save the preset. But...lol... The preset will not work. I made a new project. New Composition. Made a shape - a Circle. Dragged the preset on to the Shape Layer, but it will not work. The keyframes are there. But it will not scale out. It’s a simple scale. Two keyframes. Bummer... Am I doing something wrong?
@@jremmie4054 when you save the present, you have to make sure all the properties you want saved are highlighted. It's easier to click on CONTENTS and TRANSFORM - that way it will save all the transform properties and everything in your contents. Sounds like contents wasn't selected. Once you do that, you don't have to add a shape layer - just double-click the preset and it will bring in the shape layer, but make sure no other layers are selected
@@7MinuteAETutorials Will do! Thanks a bunch. I’ll let you know how I make out. You’re awesome man! 👍💪
Right at 1:45, AE isn't allowing me to create a second position keyframe for this Rectangle shape.
That's strange.... you should be able to create as many keyframes as you want. Are you on the position of the Rectangle Path?
@@7MinuteAETutorials Correct.
@@MateoMarine If you can add the first keyframe, you should be able to add the second. What's happening when you try to add a second keyframe?
@@7MinuteAETutorials Nothing happens. The first one remains, but a second is not created. I can, however, create keyframes for the position of the shape layer itself, just not for the rectangle path.
I figured it out. It may be a bug of sorts. The position coordinates stay at 0 if I click and drag the path in the viewer. But, if I just toggle the coordinates directly, the keyframes are created. Weird.
Your video is not seen from below where English is added
I'm not sure I understand what you mean
top
*AE* It's In the plain (I'm sorry that was terrible)
But why are you moving so fast?
you skip a step u just cut didn't show how you went to the speed graph
The speed graph can be accessed by clicking the Graph Icon or clicking Shift + F3
I replied from my other account in case you were wondering :)
I just found how to chose different types of graph (speed, position): just right click in the graph and chose the good variable for you.
@@jean-marcfroissart7080 omg thanks Jean-Marc, u saved me, i was looking for the speed graph bout i couldn't found it
Ughhh zaddy
6:57? Lol 7 minutes
Subbed tho
U didn't cover the whole screen bro
I'm not exactly sure what you mean. And, wow, this was my second video that I produced and it was 7 years ago. It's good to see it's still being watched.
@@7MinuteAETutorials like the intro the rectangles were covering the screen so the next scene won't appear u know what I mean
@@elnino4445 I'm not seeing what you are :) This is a video that was uploaded 7 years ago. I appreciate the comment.
Bro you talk and do things too fast😅
gotta get them in 7 minutes. Some of the topics are difficult to follow if you're not at least at the intermediate level.
Way too fast for me.. :/ Thumb Down
ok I'm a bit late to this video, I've paused at 0.05 seconds "thinking should I carry on watching this guy claims 7mins yet it's 6.57....."
HighGrade ANDREW Thanks for watching. I have a lot of new content coming out, and always try to stay within 7:00. Sometimes I go over and some topics are so big that they require a few lessons.
I like your videos and have been watching many of them recently. Tell me something. Be clear ......your talking to beginners ? Or your target audience are Ae experts with 7 years experience ? (paradoxical...if it were the later....they wouldn't be spending time here watching these videos lol). So im going to go on a hunch and say its the former. Then speak so that the former category can understand. You cant be on the fence...by logic you can only cater to one of this audience. So when its the former (beginners) why would you @1:53 straight from a KEYFRAME you just didn't even show how you opened the graph editor. It just popped on, there was no mouse movement even to see where you went and clicked, so you've put a jump cut and hence made it beyond comprehension, it wouldn't have killed you to just show your mouse going and clicking the GRAPH EDITOR BUTTON which is next to the MOTION BLUR TOGGLE.....yes.....i know it.....but im speaking for the beginners and for myself when watching any future videos where even i may not know what just happened. How would they know ?............bam the GRAPH EDITOR is on the screen.... and your like "THIS IS THE GRAPH EDITOR" ....figure it out beginners ! The same jump cut magic is on 2-3 of your other videos i saw last night. This time i wanted to point it out to you. Dont take me wrong im not trying to criticize....thats why im explaining so much.
Thanks for the comment and the thought that went into it. This particular video is very old - it's one of the first ones I did. I've learned how to be more concise and effective in my delivery, and show every step along the way, so I wouldn't be surprised if a few steps were missed way back then. As far as who my audience is... I do actually cater to all levels. I assume people who watch my videos have at least some familiarity with the software and can get around it with little difficulty. The concepts are designed to be learned by designers at all levels. I regularly get comments from people who have been designing for a few years and they tell me that these tips, tricks, and shortcuts make their journey easier. I also get comments from very advanced designers (like 15+ years) who come across something I cover that they never knew existed. My audience is motion graphic designers who want to learn how to use After Effects, learns shortcuts, design and work with common elements (like text, text animators, shape layers, transitions, etc), and sometimes I'll throw in a more advanced project while trying to explain what I'm doing so that anyone can follow. The topics to me matter - I only do tutorials on topics that I find interesting and that I believe designers will benefit from. I disagree that I should cater ONLY to experts vs. beginners. There's a lot to cover with After Effects and I believe designers at all levels can benefit from my tutorials. I will definitely take your comment re: how to get to the graph editor to heart. Sometimes things are second nature to me and I may miss a step. It certainly isn't intentional and I'm certainly not perfect. I have definitely tried over the years to be as clear and concise as possible. Thanks again for this comment. It is truly appreciated.
