  • The Zet Cross has become one of my absolute favorites. At first look most people will place the Cross somewhere between the Dagger Phantom and the Pyranha 9r2. The Cross has softer edges than anything else in the creek racer class, but maintains its agility and ability to drive on hard lines. Without grabby chines you usually associate with the 9 foot boats, the Cross allows the paddler to slide it around at the hips to make quick adjustments without loosing speed, and bounce off rocks predictably. A complete review is in the works.
    From Zet Kayaks:
    "Sporty, stable and easy to manoeuvre, the CROSS has a long, wide rocker profile which has been designed to move easily through waves and holes while BOOFING beautifully at any speed. The planing 'mid' hull section is complimented by a subtle edge shape making the CROSS highly responsive when accelerating or holding a line. Meanwhile, the bow and stern's displacement hull shape allows for the CROSS to easily turn with no ‘catchy features’. Altogether, the CROSS is the perfect whitewater companion for any purpose or environment.
    Designed for paddlers in the range 70 to 100 kg, the CROSS's incredible stability makes it suitable for not only expert kayakers, but also beginners and intermediate paddlers looking to improve their whitewater skills.
    As always, the CROSS is created using a superior moulding technology + baking process that guarantees a high quality, high strength plastic shell complete with a well proven outfitting scheme that out lasts all other boats in its class.
    OUTFITTING:
    ZET’s simple yet proven outfitting design remains robust, fully adjustable, and comfortable. A sturdy, closed-cell foam seat protects you from bigger impacts and provides considerable warmth compared to padded "water sponging" seats. Both front and rear pillar braces are formed seamlessly with the cockpit rim for added structural rigidity, safety and functionality. A supportive, dual ratcheting back-band sits firmly in place while providing unrestricted access to the rear of the boat. For the footrest, ZET provides their optional standard, adjustable bulkhead, or an un-drilled hull fitted with a customizable mini-cell foam foot-block to achieve the lightest, driest boat possible (only available during our preorder period). Zet is crafty. Their hulls are so technical and amazing, yet completely unassuming to the eye.

      I think part of this that boat makers have been designing boats for the online thumbnail. We saw the same thing when playboats were the rage and designers were seemingly terrified to make something that wasn't super slicey on flatwater because that is where people demo boats.

    The cross is dope. I've been in mine for about a year and a half now. Switching between my ripper 2 fand the cross for more technical/challenging water, I've noticed that the cross rewards an aggressive, active paddling style. I've found that proactively driving the boat from the front seat is the best way to hold a line. Also, over exaggerated carving and engagement of the boat's edge is necessary to keep it tracking predictably. @AlexBarham I'm curious to know if you agree/what style and techniques you think the cross favors.

    • @AlexBarham
      @AlexBarham  7 місяців тому

      I mostly agree, although I don't think it is overly exaggerated. I find that you can steer from the knees or waste depending on the moment, and that your position in the boar had a huge effect as well in how it crosses currents

  • @JF.Rivest

    The Cross is such a good boat! I ended up selling mine because I felt it did not suit my paddling style anymore (I now paddle a Ripper most of the time and felt it was a bit sketchy to go back in my Cross for harder stuff). But it is so well balanced and that semi-displacement hull works wonders in a lot of different places.

      In all seriousness I had a R2 medium which was pretty edgy/spicy but super fun at my weight, so I was drifting all over the place going back in my Cross. Not exactly contidence-inspiring for steep creeking. I switched to a R2 large that is much better suited for harder stuff and still fun, but it is also a little long and unwieldy. I'm thinking of giving the ReactR medium a go as a quiver killer. I really liked your review of the Ninja, and I had a quick test of one that my brother ordered from Zet USA and went to fetch at your shop back in June. I really hope the Pyranha boat will end up being something similar but with harder edges. Honestly I've just been shuffling my money across the Pyranha line-up lately 😅

    Any chance you will review the Soul Super Skip RR ?

    • @AlexBarham
      @AlexBarham  8 місяців тому +2

      Nope. When it comes to Soul I don't see why I should spend the time and effort to review something that wasn't even prototyped properly, if at all.
      With the "Skipper" you could take any modern design, make it in carbon, and get similar results. I would not read much into the short clips Corran posted.

    They announced to have finished development for their new boat a few days ago.
    The boat itself has not yet been released though. From the one or two bad photos i saw, it looked like it might be another half slice. Maybe a bigger/smaller Ninja sibling. (probably bigger. didnt look small on the photos (Facebook).)

      @lordofnothing. Depends on the Olympic design limitations. I am not up on them, buy I thought 9ft was the length limit. Very interested to see what everyone will be paddling and if they will buy into that weird fin concept Pyranha came up with

      @@AlexBarham lol i hope not. no clue what pyranha thought when they made that design. because surface area can be cancelled out in the friction equation. so it shouldnt make any difference.
      might be much easier to give a good polish + coconut oil slick before the race though 🤔🤣

    • @AlexBarham
      @AlexBarham  8 місяців тому

      Supposedly it was to get the landing angle closer to flat, but you watch the slo-mo and the hull slaps right back to the stern rocker profile as it lands and it does not appear to make a difference
