This was a serial rental for me that I never beat. My friends and I would get this on a Friday night, play until dawn, get up at 10 am and start again, play all Saturday while eating pizza and punching each other or whatever we did in 1991, then return the game on Saturday night. Never beat, not a one of us.
An amazing fact nobody mentions about this game, is that it has cooperative moves that beatem up at the time didn’t have, not even in the arcade beatemups, like the double cyclone kick, and the jump kick you can throw in your Lee brother which will trigger him to throw you back to hit coming enemies. This last attack is also performed by some enemies. I always wondered how the hell the ninjas were able to enter that area of the pyramid lol About Marian, she appears in the Japanese manual where she explain the moves in cute chibi manga form.
Great work as always, Professor and Co! You really turned me around on this game. I still prefer the first two but I had written this off until watching your LBWB (one of my favorite episodes btw!) on it and realized I was playing it all wrong. A weird and rough game at times, but not worth the hate it gets.
It's difficult to get a combo in on her without her going flame snake on Chin, but yep as you said like everything else, Noiram will die quite quickly if you can get the punches in. It's just not the safest technique.
My only issue with this game is that their life meter or HP is too low and the weapon use count is also low. I played the Japanese version and I think their HP is much higher as well as the weapon count. But over all, it is a very good game for me. I always choose 2 player B mode. After defeating the first set of thugs at the dojo when Brett dies, I pummeled the 2nd player which is Jimmy and when he's KO'ed and he is blinking I quickly go out of the door. If you allow Jimmy to fully disappear you can't use him when you go to the character select screen after going out. Then when you look at your player screen at the next screen or after going out you will see Jimmy alive but as player 1 you can select or use Jimmy. I just don't know or haven't tried yet if I again use player 2 controller if I can regain or control Jimmy back as the 2nd player. I have done this in the Japanese version but I don't know in the US/Acclaim version if this trick will work. He is like his brother Billy with the same moves like the cyclone kick and nunchucks, and become more like a pallet swap. My technique is always using a running wall jump whenever possible as that can easily overpower opponents even the bosses just time the jump. Though be careful that when you do a wall jump you don't go straight to the edge of a screen for stages with no floors or you'll be dead. If you're 2 player stick together and do the cyclone kick for Billy and Jimmy at the same time and you will notice that they do the move together holding arms back to back and spinning. For Chin or Ranzou since they can't do a cyclone kick sticking them together nothing happens (imagine Chin doing a cyclone kick with his short feet 🤣😂 though the same short feet can do and hit with his standing double kick which is weird 🤔). This double move deals massive damage and can one hit any regular thugs. Useful for bosses too. The double cyclone kick can do big damage that I think 5 hits of this to a boss KO's them except for Noiram as she may have more HP and more moves/tricks and also she is the final boss of the game. Though a turbo controller is preferred here unless you can do a manual button press and can time your partner for the cyclone kick move. For bosses, if there are no wall for a wall jump, I do the go up and or go down the lane so that when they get to my line of sight per se is they will be hit with whatever move I use like a punch or kick with no damage for me. For the mummies, do the up or down the lane and do your characters special as I call it like Chin's standing double kick, cyclone kick for Billy and Jimmy and the tumble kick for Ranzou. Don't do normal moves like punches or kicks for the mummies as they can absorb it and when they get close to you they always do the 3 big chops or 2 chops plus a throw that deals 2 or 3 bars of damage. Oh and don't let the mummies see your back or caught you with your backs at them as they most or always use a throw move. Darn those mummies can do a hard throw. 😤 But when I have Chin, is I do the go up or down and then instead I position my self that the sprite of the bosses will almost cover me. Then use Chin's normal move and those bosses are like paper since they will try to reposition to your level/sight before attacking while you can already hit them and with the claws, much better. For the mummies, with them able to take some punches or kicks a special is recommended - cyclone kick, tumble kick or standing double kick. Chin's hand claw can work and really tear them apart but risky since they can grab you immediately or do the mummy chop punch which stops the move and do big damage. I found the sprite cover useful for big bosses like on the first stage (I think he is Abobo) and beat him easily. Though if you miss or if Abobo ducks move out the way. His combo move is fast for a big guy and will sometimes do a big foot stomp as well. For stage 1 since I don't have Chin yet, I use the cyclone kick but for fun using 2 or 3 normal moves (kicks and punches) then rinse and repeat. For the big Italian guy (I think one of the Urquidez brothers or just look like them shirtless wears a spandex and boots) same strategy. Though you must use a turbo controller here as when you miss you will get punish for it by a hit. For normal moves with Chin, it can be either 1 or 2 combos but if you use Chin's hand claw weapon then it will be almost 1 full combo and they are out. For Noiram/Cleopatra (whatever she is), you can do the up and down sight trick but need to move out specially if she becomes invisible. If she does go invisible, count exactly 3 seconds and jump away as she will try to reappear to your last position and yeah don't have distance as she will use telekinesis to drive you back to the edge/wall for some chunk of damage like 1 1/2 to 2 bars of HP. Also, if she hits you in the fire snake form it will do some damage but not that massive but still it hurts specially if your other guys are on low health that you almost not able to change. Though be careful as on a rare occasion when she did use the telekinesis move on one of my games, I was thrown upward which I thought will be like the normal wall throw then I will go down but no it is a stuck up and you must reset the game and start over. Some annoying bug that you're in the last stage and then a stuck up. 🤣😂 I do again use Chin here and the hand claw. Then when his claw is 0 or you can't use it anymore then use any character and almost certain that one or two spinning kick or Ranzou's tumble kick and she should be out. In the Japanese version since it has a higher weapon count, 2 claw karate combo moves and she is toast. For fun with Chin, I just use his normal moves and she can be out in 5x to 7x of normal combos. Last thing, in the Japanese version that I owned if you press the start and A or B and A together you will do a stage skip even until the end of the game. Like you don't need to play just do the button presses and you can finish the game in a blink - no sweat at all 🤣😂. In the US/Acclaim version I think this was removed or you just need to do more button combo presses. Well I tried but didn't work or know how to or maybe there's none at all. For Haruko, she is old and may not use martial arts but she maybe a witch/sorceress and put a spell or use some lethal magic to kill Brett and could be the reason why she has knowledge on the Rosetta stones and it's power. Just my theory and yeah Brett no doubt is a martial artist and can beat Haruko but if Brett say is a close combat specialist then Haruko is a mage /witch/sorceress and use spells. This caught Brett off guard thinking she is harmless but it didn't take long to find out. Well it's a good nostalgic feeling seeing my favorite childhood game again. Sorry for the very long post but it shows my love for the game and some techniques I use. Thanks for the good video and more power. 😉
Excellent additional tips, and I appreciate the same love for the game like I have when a lot of folks kind of forget about it or put it second fiddle to the first two.
This is the only one i ever owned other than "the shadow falls" or whatever that awful fighting game was, for genesis, and i only bought it because it was bad. Never finished it! It was cool though, i always liked Chin and the Samurai guy that was visually similar to the metal samurai robot from the TMNT cartoons and toy line. It was a long tine ago and the two characters probably look nothing alike! I forgot about the broken bottle. And the hippy enemies. The bottle reminds me of the bruce Campbell line from the evil dead show, "i was sharpening it for you!"

Ha yeah. My bro and I could get to the final level and have it all fall apart in those pits. Just brutal.
Scary Gary's boss fight tips are stunning!
Thanks BBJ, we got ya covered!
This does bring up the point of how the hair toss works on the bald men, doesn't it?
Just really grabs the scalp, really gets in there.
Prof Tony thank you for playing these classics. I love double dragon.... never beat em
Yeah the pits in this one are nasty in particular. Get by those and focus on the combat strategies we cover in this one and it's much easier.
Ranzou was my favorite for the jumps. Just slash and hold the button down and press the other button for easy jumps.
Agreed, I love his moon jump.

That's true, you get some interesting combos of enemies tossing one another, mimicking that move. Maybe they were students of the Lees at one point!

Excellent to hear and that's a great compliment on the video that it can change your mind on this one, so thank you DC!
If you can get in Chin's punches (Or the Iron Claw) on Noiram, she'll be a piece of cake!
It's difficult to get a combo in on her without her going flame snake on Chin, but yep as you said like everything else, Noiram will die quite quickly if you can get the punches in. It's just not the safest technique.
@@VideoGames101 Chin.............is..............so...............slow.................
Ranzou should compete in the Olympics... he'd hold the record for high jump.
Ha yes he would, Emperor and Olympic High Jump champion.
Never known there was a Double dragon III on NES, nice game.
Yep it gets lost by the wayside to the first two but it's great in its own right.
always loved the hair throw, not a bad game
Ha I'm realizing the insane physics and physical fitness requirements involved with that move now that I think about it.
yeah own this hard game, good ole Bimmy & Jimmy lol
Ha yep, I love this game so much.
Wow this one really has a jojo Bizarre adventure feel to it!
Maybe they took a piece from it for JBA!
Great game!
Yeah, like Castlevania 3 they give you a different look with the last title and it's welcome.
15:20 - Hitboxes - how do they even work?

The hardest one to play
Yeah definitely the most unconventional of the bunch. It's all about leveraging the best moves.
Still no Double Dragon 2? I haven't seen it on the list.......
Yeah that one's coming in the next month or so.

Ha that is a good line. Never watched the show but loved Army of Darkness back in the day.
