Adventure Island NES Walkthrough | 100% Guide | Video Games 101
In this Adventure Island NES walkthrough, we show you how to get through one of the most frustrating titles ever to grace the NES, and certainly one of the hardest from Hudson Soft. With one-hit deaths and arguably more pits than any other game you'll ever play, this game is a monster. Speaking of which, we've done a lot of classes here on Video Games 101 so far, but in terms of personal accomplishments, this might be my proudest as I explain near the end of this one.

Most people don't know this, but there was a 4th AI game but it was released in Japan only.
I would personally rank this games difficulty at a 7. It's deceptive because of the cute graphics and how solid the controls are but watching this tutorial, I noticed a ton of close calls. The game actually rewards you for speed running. Second guessing things or taking your time will get you killed more often than not. One of the most surprising things as an adult was realizing how difficult these games are compared to the Sonic ones.
got this games years after market and even with a game genie me and my roommate played it for hours and the furthest we could get was 8-3 section 3 as that final jump screwed us so badly we just couldnt get through it with that damn bat that comes as your trying to jump and not fall in the pit, very hard game and the sequels are much more fairer
STRONGLY recommend watching those first 4 series of castlevania, dude. They are pretty great! Also thank you for another great vid, professor!
I've heard excellent things, good call, Martin I surely will do!
I beat this one back in the day, I don't remember it being hard. I recently beat Wonder Boy on the PS4, with that collection. I was shooting to get all achievements on it and one of them is to get all of those pots. I'm surprised at how similar it is to Adventure Island. One thing that is different is in AI, when you reach the boss you food meter disappears but in WB, it does not.
Yeah it's mostly a glorified sprite swap, but a better selling one apparently! I like and am terrified of the idea of keeping the food meter up during bosses; it would certainly put a little more urgency into that battle and be much more likely to force a mistake.
Hey Professor, cheers for the lesson. Please keep them coming and say hi to Scary Garry for me - I dig his style. Good looking out.
Thank you, Richard, and will surely do!
When you get the time I highly recommend you play the Wonder boy games. Monster land, The Dragon's Trap, monster world, 4 are all amazing games. There is Wonder boy 3 but personally I don't really enjoy that game. in 2018 a new game called Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom came out which has tons of call backs, characters, music, etc to all wonder boy games even the first wonder boy game that became adventure island on nes, I have that game on the gamegear and the switch remake which are fine games but I prefer the later 2D rpg games, they remind me of zelda 2 (another game I love alot). Will warn you tho Monsterland is a fantastic game but it's one of the most frustrating games to complete due to alot of trial and error gameplay, secrets and you're on a time limit while going for the equipment to defeat the many bosses easily including the final boss, that's if you can make it to the FB since the final level is a maze that does troll you and it's a major endurance. I spent alot my time as a kid mastering Monsterland but I recommend anyone to use a walkthrough while doing practice runs, I have no shame using guides these days lol also take advantage of secret stages to get more money to overwhelm your enemies. The later games like Dragon's Trap, Monster World, 4, Monster Boy are way much better games and play like metroidvanias. The Dragon's Trap, has been ported with different visual styles but play the same except for the 2017 remake which is on all modern platforms which makes the game look much better, they reworked the charmstone item (original charmstones gave you acces to items mandatory to beat the game and it was cryptic how many you needed in the original, the remake reworks this only for 100% completion rewards) The easiest Wonder boy game to beat is "monster world" the one with the blue haired protagonist, it's pretty easy for most part up to the final boss which in the USA/PAL version is poorly balanced, but in japanese version it's easy.
One negative -- not enough variety in the graphics !! It’s a good idea to try to memorize the patterns !!! At the very end - how come no total score ???
Yeah you're spot on, Burrito; for better or worse a lot of memorization is required for a few stretches (that crazy gauntlet of 8-3 certainly comes to mind).
Great video !! Whomever is playing -- just terrific !!! Love your humor !! Awesome tips !!!!! You are an amazing player !!! However, a terrific platformer
Thank you kindly!
Yes, this game is as annoying today as it was 40 years ago
Haha I find it charming, but it certainly veers into incredibly frustrating and annoying at times.
That Rare story is absolutely wild
It's a very cool way to get your "in" in the game industry.
I briefly played the original Wonder Boy on the Sega Master System, but I know the two sequels inside and out; especially The Dragon's Trap. It's pretty hard to play The Dragon's Trap without using passwords to at least add more gold.
Nice, Cammy. Just checked Dragon's Trap out as I'm familiar with the Adventure Island sequels but not the Wonder Boy ones which obviously went in different directions.
I never made it pass 5-1 I eventually started calling this pure rage the video game I went through 5 controllers before I decided that I will never play it again
Yeah 5-1 is where they put that stake in the ground and old man Hudson said "so you think you're pretty good!?" and it starts to get real. And I know what you mean; this game was very much in mind when I was coming up with the various frustration scales as I know I bit on and threw some controllers over this one.
If i had played this game as a kid... and got THAT Ending.... after *ALL* That? oh id have been SALTY!
Ha some things never change, hero of Ghoul/Cool School or not.
A lot of fructose
So much fructose.
I rented this game from block buster and never returned it then they went out of business I'll have to see if my dad still has that copy!
Haha that's awesome.
There are only 96 exits in the game?!?!?!??! When I was a kid, I was POSITIVE there were 99. I spent HOURS going back and trying to figure out what I missed....
I know, it was nasty because as kids we're conditioned to expect certain familiar numbers. 8/10/12 levels. Ha once you see that 96, I was conditioned to begin my search for the missing 4.
58:40 I thought that Fluff would appreciate a bit of trivia about the eggplant power-down. The music which plays while Master Higgins is under the influence of an eggplant is off-putting by design. It is actually a slowed-down, minor key version of the main Adventure Island level theme! You can observe this yourself by finding a UA-cam video with the eggplant theme song and adjusting the playback speed to "1.75X" using the gear icon. Cheers!
I love that fact, thank you Doc! The minor key is synonymous with bad times, no matter the context!
I remember my best friend had the Gameboy version of this game when I was a kid. It was a really good game but it was hard af.
Nice, I never played this one on GB. Yep thankfully it was the "worth it" kind of a hard game.
"Who would Bowser be smashing?" Well, I mean, the theory is he has seven "kids" right? How many times do we think he's kidnapped the princesses? ...I can see why maybe they'd want to walk that back!
Haha yeah when you put it like that.
This game made a lot of kids cry back in the 1980's.
Yep, 86-87 was the peak of Hudson cruelty. This, Milon, Dino Riki...
Wow! And Krillin was like, "This is nuts!"
Ha definitely.
For some reason I never played Adventure Island. But it kind of reminds of Super Mario Bros. I like the skateboard option. Looks fun.
Yep the skateboarding is very fun until they put two obstacles back to back or any platforms with pits anywhere, heh. They know EXACTLY what they're doing, though!
Might be a bit of mandela effect on my part, but I recall an episode of game theory where the challenge was to discern the location of the setting for the game(s). After comparing the relative variety of fruits and the eggplant, along with the scenery for the different stages, it was deduced that it was likely modeled after the real life region of the Phillippines, since it's one of the few qualifying venues where such fruits grow naturally, the biomes track along with the wildlife. Also, surmising that higgins'... _bounteous_ figure was a dig at perceived oppressors. Granted, looking back, I wouldn't be surprised that MatPat was reading _a mite too much_ into it.
Ha yeah I wonder if the developers even had that thought, but I like the idea and it plays into the exotic connotations I have with this game.
I would add a secret to this game is ALWAYS KEEP MOVING TO THE RIGHT
Yep, ABM! Unless you're Hyde!
Skateboard is a 💀 ☠️
I still remember playing this game as a kid and accidentally finding an odd glitch that changed my game. Lol. On Chocolate 3 the level where there are 2 flag posts. I walked across from the back side. The game kinda didn't know what happened and the spotlight got screwed up and the entire island changed color. I couldn't stop laughing for like 5 min. Keep up the great work! 😀
Correction, if you hop off yoshi and get up on the platform with the first goal without scrolling the screen then cross the goal. Then the magic happens. 😅
Haha that's awesome. Just when you think you've seen everything in a game you know that well and you find a new and entertaining glitch. Thank you TC!
Your original playthrough of this is one of my favorites to watch, though the no death run you did was also very impressive. If you're looking for a recommendation, might I suggest Legacy of the Wizard? It's from our friends at Broderbund and a really really underrated game. I'd highly suggest doing your due diligence and study up for it, though. They kinda just throw you in without a background and it's easy to not know what to do and get lost. Anyway, thank you for all the videos you provide. They help me get through tough times. Take care
Ha yeah that was an s-show, back in the day. I really do love this game despite the difficulty. I've had a lot of requests for Legacy of the Wizard so I think it needs to happen sooner than later, I appreciate it as always, Reid.
This was the very first game I ever played for NES. The nostalgia it brings back. I was 5yrs old. Hated the difficulty. Never made it past boss 5
Yes they do a good job ramping up the difficulty. Unfortunately yes by the time you get to the final quarter of this game it's pretty ridiculous.
Fire jump at the end of 8-3 was bonkers
Short of some sewing themed game, never has "thread the needle" been more appropriate.
And best part... It was unnecessary. It was a fake with vase inside.
The most important item in the game is the Hudson bee at the end of level 1-1. If you miss it, this game is extremely difficult!
Without a doubt. Item of the game!
@ sorry, I posted that before beginning the video. I am very much enjoying all of your videos
You guys rock.. thanks very much! ✌️🤘
Thanks DBD!
I always feel like I'm doing really good at this game, and then I get to the first boss.......
Haha all downhill from there.
I can remember the first time I ever played this game was at a friends house and he had the cool ahead of their time wireless controllers (they did not work) and so it was a nightmare. You would try to react quickly and jump and it would either not jump or reacted a half hour too late
Man I forgot about those. Now I remember the commercial; they superimposed colorful beams that were shooting at the screen and I thought it was amazing. Never got one.

That boulder though……. Oh man lol thank u god of the hit-box
The "double boulders" are very cruel in particular.
That boulder though……. Oh man lol thank u god of the hit-box
Really just want to say I appreciate and love this channel
Thank you Peter!
Man, getting a 10/10 on the frustration scale must be nigh impossible. This game I felt was a shoe-in! Maybe Marble Madness gets there?
Love me some Marble Madness, and true to its name that game can be maddening but after running it many times I can generally beat it about 50% of the time. The super short games are more manageable even when difficult by virtue of how little there is to master. That'd be a fun and laid back class, actually.
wasnt this game already done on this channel? i thought ive seen you guys do a 100% walkthrough video of this game.
Yep we did this one very early on; this is updated with another fact, added commentary, fixed the aspect ratio, etc.
Master Higgins must have one heck of a metabolism if he needs to constantly eat just to stay alive.
I honestly worry about him after we save "the princess" when I'm not there to find food for him anymore!
@@VideoGames101 since he has a contract with the franchise, they probably hook him up to a feeding tube until he's ready for the next game.
This is one of my first NES games, and I still love it. For a simplistic NES platformer, it has a ton of replay ability.
Yep, they pack this one with a lot of levels, the different biomes (even when they just change the color scheme) and traps keep things feeling very fresh.

Another frequent childhood rental which I never completed. My friend Timmy did own it though! I remember one day I came home from school and went to Timmy’s house instead of mine (he lived two houses down), and his mom was playing this colorful, fun new game and having an absolute blast. It was Hudson’s Adventure Island! Miss you, Timmy. Looking forward to the lesson, prof!
Yep I love how vibrant this game is to your point. The two forest themed levels, the tropical islands. They lull you in early with the fun gameplay and cartoony graphics before it gets serious midway through!
I beat this game when it was rereleased on one of the GameBoy systems. Fighter, and one of each mage.
That's a nice group. Plenty of options offensively or curatively to keep yourself upright and your enemies on the ground.
@@VideoGames101 Yeah, I liked having the Red Mage doubling up on the workhorse magic. And he kicked a little butt in melee.
This was my guilty pleasure. Loved it
Yep, I rented this one so many times/was heartbroken at losing my saves so many times I finally just got it back in the day.
44:47 What did you jump off of? Wendy was always my favorite as a kid too.
Actually I wasn't jumping in that case, that was using the temporary flight I had from running with the cape feather. When you're on Yoshi you can stagger your height up and down for a limited time with the cape feather running/flight mechanic. You probably already knew that, but yes just to clarify what was happening there as out of context it does look like we're using the SNES' Game Genie or stumbling on some glitch, ha.
It's always neat seeing what choices people make in Bowser's castle. I remember 3 and 8 for my choices. Mondo run! I did ace the game as a kid. As the 2D games go, I think this one just barely edges out #3 for me but that can go either way depending on the day.
Yep, I recommend 2, 7 as they're both some combination of fast and relatively easy (especially 2). And yep, I can be persuaded either game is better on different days.
I cannot get past that first waterfall jump with the piranhas. Seems impossible but somehow you make it.
Yeah that stretch at 17:00 is silly. You need to jump on that first log at a similar level as I did; you might need to retreat a few steps then come back to try to get that first piranha to jump early. Once you're on the log, you need to do one of the tall somersault jumps to fit that tight window over the next two piranhas. The whole stage is awful.
Back in the day I would just leave Mario on the special world map and let the Mario 1 theme remix play forever. Or at least for extended periods. One of my favorite remixes of the theme, even to this day.
Ha I did that with a lot of games, as well. That is a great theme.
