And is there really pirate gold off the coast?
We’re gonna answer those questions and more. So get out your favorite bottle of barbecue sauce as we get ready to unbox the state of North Carolina.
Okay let's turn that off. So, North Carolina - a beautiful state. In fact, this is my home state. And I have to say of all the states I’ve been to, this state has it all. Cool mountains and awesome beaches, friendly people, and kinda clean modern cities.
Okay, so not all of em are clean and modern. In fact, not many are. North Carolina cities have some work to do. But they’re getting better!
But to get a big picture overview of the Tar Heel State, we need to look at a map and discover this state’s wonders.
North Carolina is pretty much comprised of six major areas. We’ll begin on the western side of the state, which is mostly mountains. The most well known of this part of the state is the city of Asheville, which has almost 100,000 people. And that number is growing every single day. Asheville is a pretty neat mountain town, where there’s a lot of breweries. Nearby is the Biltmore Hotel, which you’ve probably heard of. They do a big ta do at Christmas.
Also in these mountains are several mediocre ski resorts, here, along the Virginia and Tennessee state lines.
You have Charlotte, which is the 17th biggest city in America. It’s one of the fastest growing cities in the nation, and is growing so fast, the suburbs are actually now in South Carolina.
There are two other large metro areas in the state - and they kinda make up one longish giant metro area. The western side of this area is mostly made up of Winston Salem and Greensboro. They call this the Triad. Then, the other main metro area to the east is called The Triangle. You may have heard of this region.
The Triangle is the cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, and their suburbs. This region is pretty much the fastest growing area in the country outside of north Dallas. These three cities have major universities, hospitals and a growing number of tech companies. Hence, this is also called the Research Triangle.
We’ll talk about the universities here when we get into sports.
Now, on the eastern coast are two major regions. The Outer Banks makes up a series of island chains which stretch from the Virginia border all the way down to Cape Hatteras. This thin strip of land is made up mostly of vacation homes, beach rentals, sightseeing destinations, lighthouses, tacky beach shops and places to get ice cream.
That’s really it. It’s very quiet here and the water is warm. North Carolina beaches are far superior to those in California.
The other region of note is the lower outer banks. This is a different set of islands, which are far more populated. Especially in the middle, where there is a large population in the Wilmington metro area.
The further south down these island chains you get, the more rural it gets, until you get to the South Carolina border.

I'd love to get a job there and move, This state checks off just about every box for me, and having 4 seasons for once would be a nice change of pace. Having both beaches AND mountains is a giant bonus.

Same I grew up in Denton, NC but currently live in Lexington, NC
I watched it a second time to try to figure out why I watched it the first time. I have concluded it’s because I embrace inanity and mediocrity, especially when it celebrates the great modern American pastime of self-loathing.
After this thirty-one minute purge of brain cells, I feel this video is presented from a point of view biased towards contemporary urban experiences while ignoring history and demeaning the values and life styles common among rural and small town culture. Rather than unboxing, it seems to have dragged a lot of boxes out of our national psychological attic and some stereotype containers out of the closet and shoved a diverse and dynamic population into them on the way to a cultural dumping ground of cliches.
I’m going to fire it up again after I go pop some Yadkinville popcorn, cover it with some Ashe County butter and sprinkle on some Hatteras sea salt. Yum!

You left out a ton of info on Western NC including Black Bears, Bluegrass, Blue Ridge Parkway, Hillbillies, Hippies, Mt Biking, White water rafting, Hiking, Waterfalls etc but maybe that's a good thing.
It's a great thing we don't need people flocking somewhere and crowding the areas because they wrecked there's with there ideas of zin .

I’m a transplant from Massachusetts, moved here in 1970 b/c my USAF husband was stationed in Goldsboro. Stayed here alone when he was sent to Thailand during the Vietnam War? Moved to Ft. Worth, TX, where he retired after 21 years. When he retired, we could have moved anywhere in the US. We both loved NC and decided to move back there. That was in 1974. He died in 2016 and I still live here. I love NC, the food, the moderate climate ( no snow shovels), the mountains and the coast, but most of all the people. I didn’t stay here to try to change it but to embrace it. The difference between a Yankee and a Damned Yankee? A Yankee comes down here for a vacation and goes back up North, a Damned Yankee comes down here and stays! And it’s true. More and more people are migrating here, then piss and moan about how different things are here. I consider myself a Tar Heel and actually resent hearing it. I’ve told a couple of them to head back north where things are just like they like it. People like that are exactly why southerners don’t like northerners.

A perfect example of the kindness and generosity of the native Carolinians happened to me a few years ago. I had to move out of state for about five years and when I moved back, I had to set up an apartment. I loaded up a shopping cart with a full load of stuff: pillows, spices, dishes, bed linens, etc. I had just opened a checking account and knew that I had several thousand dollars in it. While I was waiting in line at the register, I struck up a conversation with the woman behind me. We never exchanged names but had a nice chat for those few minutes. When my turn to check out finally came, I unloaded my cart and the bill came to over $225. Well, my debit card was declined! I never carry that much cash so I had no choice but to start putting everything back into the cart. The lady that I had been talking to told the cashier to add my bill to hers! I hugged her and started to cry and she said to me, “Welcome back to North Carolina!” I never knew her name and when I asked her for it, she told me that it didn’t matter, she was my welcome back committee.
I taught middle school in a very poor county (Pamlico) for eight years and never got a Christmas gift. What teacher doesn’t have a collection of mugs? But every Spring, parents would bring me the fresh from their gardens the best fruits and vegetables-so much better than a mug!
I’ll be 80 in a couple of months and still live in my small apartment.
. I have family in Massachusetts who want me to move back. Why would I do that when I already live in the best place I’ve ever lived. My bones will be buried in North Carolina dirt.👩🏻🦳❤️

We have a barbecue festival every year in Lexington. Around here its referred to as the barbecue Capitol of the world. It's real.

@@NickJohnson you fair in the in the video you were an NC native. Also there is so much incorrect information in this video that it should be flagged. The "tar heel" came from during the war. There's two versions. One is they had to put tar on the feet of the nc soldiers to keep them from running away during battle. The other version which is more popular in nc is that they stood their ground so well that it was like they have tar on their heels.
More incorrect things:
If you wanna move near Charlotte, only go to Davison if you like hippies and breweries. If you want to raise a family to 20 minutes south east to matthews, Weddington, marvin, Wesley chapel. Heck average household income in Weddington and in Marvin is over 120k! Weddington high school (I went there so I'm a bit biased but these are facts) and Marvin ridge high school gave graduation rates of over 98% this is the richest area of the state except for a small town that just had a lot of rich people living there where average income is like 250k. That's a lot for nc. You can get a 4000sq ft home in Weddington for 500k. 15 minutes from the interstate and without traffic 25-30 minutes from uptown. It's ok. I can tell by your accent you have no clue about north Carolina let alone be a native. You have zero accent.

Exactly right on every point you made.
A couple additions.
1. Asheville. Not mountain folk. Put a big circle around Asheville and put “hippies and college kids”
2. The food scene was booming until COVID. Lots of new restaurants bringing ethnic cuisine and new concepts.
3. The Roanoke mystery has pretty much been solved by genetics.
4. BBQ culture is not going anywhere. JD’s Smokehouse in Connellys Springs.
5. Nobody is a Washington Nationals fan. Lots of NYG/NYM/Phillies fans due to northern transplants.
6. Bread, milk, and EGGS. And people’s bad driving starts with a moderate rain, not just snow.
7. Mexican restaurants??? Hickory has:
El Paso, El Sarape, Dos Amigos, Rancho Vallejo, Casa Azul, Mi Pueblita, Los Compadres, and probably a few more... you just have to ask the locals.
And you didn’t touch on the budding pre-COVID food truck scene.
@@Christackleberry I laughed the moment he said we get an average of 4 to 5 inches of snow all over the state and just discredited most of what he said. I’ve lived here for 20 years and it’s snowed 4 or 5 times..with not even an inch 😂.

It's called the tarhill State due to the way soldiers fought in the revolutionary war. The British said it was like they had tar on their hills because they would stand their ground and would not move.

Barbecue is still the most famous food in NC. People stand in lines outside of local restaurants for it. Some restaurants run out of barbecue regularly.
What bugged me more is saying there aren't enough Mexican restaurants. There is one on every corner, and quite frankly that is the predominant food in America - and it is sad - there are so many other "Spanish" foods that are neglected for Americanized Mexican food. All it is in the US is taco tuesday, forgetting about other fab foods like Cuban, Dominican, Peruvian, Salvadoran, Brazilian food. And some of the worst Chinese food in the country too.

NC has the best of everything. Beach, piedmont and mountains. Beautiful spring, lush summers, golden autumn and just enough winter to enjoy the snow.

Most of my childhood was in NC. I lived in Jacksonville, Camp Lejeune, Newport, Havelock (Cherry Point is there and I lived on that base too), and Hubert Swansboro area. I got the opportunity to go to Charlotte to see my Panthers play, I loved New Bern so much. God I miss my childhood and I wasn't born there. Just a Florida boy who's childhood state home was NC. My family moved to NC in the early 80's and I call NC home. I live on the coast and you missed the major part of this region, the fishing. NC is a great fishing state and hosts the Big Rock fishing tournament which is one of the oldest and largest fishing tournaments in the country. To date it has donated over $6 million to charities for the homeless, children, arts and medical charities.

My family moved to Carteret County (Morehead City) back in the early 90’s and also consider it home as well. Fishing was a huge part of the decision to move here.
My husband and I used to have a 36’ sport fisherman and we kept it at our now torn down cottage across from the marina. I can’t count the number of times we motored right over the spot where The Queen Ann’s Revenge was discovered! We were probably less than 20’ from it-above it. I laughed my butt off when it was found.

I lived in Charlotte 2005-2007,seemed like a big forest with all the trees,didn't rain often,but came down in buckets when it did! Was surprised it had alot of big city problems,saw some southern hospitality. Streets seemed strange,not a grid like I am used to. Only place I lived where I saw the four seasons,too cold?,too hot? ,won't be long before you see spring or fall!!
Great video! I have traveled internationally for 20 years. I recently moved to NC. I through the years I have come to see culture like having a dialectic. People never think they have one, but we all do. From you perspective of culture, what ever particular elements you identify. (Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.) Every place has a culture look and embrace it can be found. It might not look like something you expect. There are many small town events where local culture can been seen. .

Lately it's been doing nothing but raining! I live near Jordan Lake kinda and it's something like 12ft higher then normal right now.

I've lived in NC since 1982 and have been lucky enough to have a job that has given me an opportunity to see every corner of this place. I think Nick's take is mostly accurate but misses the mark in some key areas. First, Greensboro is growing and is attracting some high end companies, like Honda Jet. Granted, it hasn't grown like Raleigh or Charlotte. BBQ is alive and well (also delicious) and I don't see it dying. Lastly, the Outer Banks are far from boring as long as you appreciate history, both natural and human. One more, church is big here but probably less than 50% of the population goes on a regular basis.

@@tiwhishaluster3972 Are you looking for a town near Charlotte to live or places to visit after you're there?. For a place to live, there are several small towns in Union County just Southeast of Charlotte which are nice. Also, several small towns around Lake Norman which is North of Charlotte. For places to visit, Davidson is a nice little town on Lake Norman. My top pick for a good day trip would be Brevard which is a little over two hours to the west.There is also Lake Lure and Chimney Rock in the same area. There are lots of great places if you get out and explore when you get here. There's some crappy places too. Disclaimer: I don't live in Charlotte so advice from a local may be more valuable.

As a native of Greensboro, I have to say that the Gate City is a fast growing small city as well. There is much improvement and charm in Greensboro. When I was growing up, yes this video would be accurate in stating that there wasn’t much going on in GSO. But now, the Triad is also one of the fastest growing areas in America. There is much growth to the Boro, especially downtown. No, we are not Raleigh or Charlotte (I have lived in both of those areas as well), yet I still prefer the wonderful of the beautiful Gate City.
I have only lived in Greensboro for 2 years, but I love it, great mid-size city with plenty to do and if you ever want a big city experience, Charlotte & Raleigh are less than 90 minutes away, usually after 1 day in C/R, I am ready to go back to Greensboro.

Winston Salem is a growing city as well. They have done an insane amount of work to revitalize downtown. Ten year difference is insane. Also he said there wasn't a lot of Mexican restaurants... Idk if he was being sarcastic or not, but they're all over in Winston. And they're actually good. BBQ spots are good in ws too. The triad is on the up. High point is dragging a little, but they're coming around
I totally agree, Marcus. I grew up in Greensboro many years ago and this video describes what I remember as a kid and young adult. I haven’t lived there in many years, but I did visit a few years ago and am aware that a great deal of revitalization has gone on in recent years in the downtown area. The city is really flourishing now.
Agree. I grew up in Winston and live in Greensboro. The pictures used to represent the triad are NOT a clear representation. Being 1 of the 3 metropolitan areas in the state, it’s disappointing it was so poorly misrepresented.
I live in Greensboro and it is my favorite place to live. I have lived up and down the east coast, as well as, a couple of cities on the west coast. It is not a giant city, nor is it a small town, it's perfect

From someone who has been born and raised in NC around the east coast I feel like there isn’t a lot of attention towards the beaches except Wilmington lol. Whenever I tell someone where I’m from they immediately think Wilmington even though I’m about and hour and a half north. The mountains are truly beautiful. Almost like a completely different state up there

I love North Carolina I have lived In Winston Salem for 10 years. I have also lived in Santa Barbara county in California, International Falls MN, Cusco Peru, Tampa FL and Houston TX and I can honestly say it is my favorite place! It is just such a great middle ground of city life, close proximity to great beaches, mountains and many big cities on the east coast!
PA has all of that, too, and is one of the most beautiful states (southeastern PA, esp Bucks Cty, can be as little as 50 minutes to the beach in NJ), but N.C. does seem to have much to offer as well -- and those mountains!
Thanks for this. I’m looking at moving there for the reasons you mentioned, plus cost of living and proximity to the other cities in the state. But he doesn’t seem to like WS based on this video and others, so I was getting nervous.

The problem is... is that nc was one of the 1st in the south so you will see change here 1st... but get outside of the major metros here and you will feel the “old south”

@@Ishyabish1 (the Research Triangle and Charlotte are not very Southern at all due to ppl moving in from other areas and different industry from rest of South but the rest of the state is indistinguishable from other parts of the deep south).
North Carolina is one of those States that I just can't figure out, and I don't know why. I guess because the big cities, which are big and has stuff to do, just doesnt have much name recognition and the beaches, which are beautiful, are just very quiet. And you're right about that not feeling like an East Coast place. Unless if I'm right next to the beach it just doesn't feel like a coastal state to me like Florida or South Carolina

I've traveled to 30 countries including Mexico. The Mexican restaurants owned by Mexicans have pretty good food. Maybe you prefer Tex-Mex over Mexican.

And Carrboro/Chapel Hill. There's a large Latino population here and some amazing little hole in the wall restaurants, taco trucks, tiendas and pastelerias. You just gotta know where to go to get away from the usual Americanized "Mexican" food.
I was born in Houston TX raised there. I took a contract job in Cherokee NC that was for three years. While working i experienced little towns such as weaverville and Asheville also experienced Charlotte and Wimbleton of the coast. Traveled the blue ridge parkway.. Needless to say i fell in love with NC and made a bold move to relocate here in Asheville. I love NC and been here since 2007 and hopefully I'll die here.
Thats why i love it here you can live about anyway you wanna live here you can city country beach an even rural areas

I grew up in Eastern North Carolina, on a tobacco farm. Some of the nicest people live there. I went to college at UNC in Chapel Hill. I have lived in Raleigh, Wilmington, and Greensboro. All those are great places, but you can't beat Greensboro for quality of life and raising a family. It's a great small city with great amenities. Don't overlook the Triad area if anyone is moving to NC.
I agree, Laura. I grew up in Greensboro and have fond memories with my family. The quality of life was wonderful and I am glad the city is thriving.

@@SuV33358 In the summer of 2012, I drove up to Buffalo to do a 5K with some friends. It had been hovering in the 90s with extremely high humidity for quite a while at home, but down here, that's just something you kinda deal with. (I have lived in TN and NC for my whole life.)
So I'm registering for the 5K at the stadium, and everyone is super stressed for some reason. When I got to the front of the line for my t-shirt and bib number, the lady registering me said "PLEASE be extremely careful tomorrow!" And I'm thinking there's some sort of danger on the track, maybe a serial killer is loose....no clue. I asked what I needed to be careful of, and she said "haven't you heard, we're having a heat wave!" I asked what the expected weather was, and she said 85. I was very polite and didn't laugh, but I called my friends afterwards and told them. The race was starting at 7 in the morning, and it was totally comfortable...not even any humidity to speak of, but I will never forget that. It's just all in where you come from. :-)

@@SuV33358 Absolutely! I think all parts of the country kind of tease each other for various weather situations. The south can't handle much snow, because we rarely get any, the north doesn't typically get hurricane force storms and the long range oppressive heat and humidity we get down here. In the Pacific Northwest, many people don't have AC, so they've been left stranded in their heatwave, but down here, AC is pretty much a necessity. Everybody has something.
@kimberly guinn this is kinda unrelated but it might be interesting, certain parts of ohio around cincinnati and dayton are incredibly hot and humid in the same way or worse than NC is it’s kinda wild. And they still get hella snowz

I'm from the mountains of NC (I work in Asheville) and yes we have a favorite college basket ball team even if you don't watch. Biltmore is not a hotel it is a privately owned house. We like thick BBQ sauce. Everyone has a nickname. And all regions (flat, foothills, and mountains) are COMPLETELY different worlds.

I lived in Charlotte were I worked as an engineer. It's a great place to live. Charlotte is not too big and not too small. Just about the right size. Then the pandemic hit and I had to move back to Toronto to stay with my mom because I lost my job.

My neighbors are from Minnesota! They love it here in N.C. and have been here for many years. Good people! They fit right into our southern neighborhood.
I lived in NC for most of my life and I think our state is 50/50 not great but not completely bad just kinda of in the middle.
I've been down to North Carolina quite a few times now for vacations, I've been around the Charlotte area 3 times for the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and twice for the race shops and the Charlotte Motor Speedway, I'm a big NASCAR fan. Also, my two friends and I are coming down to the Outer Banks in September for a week vacation, we're super excited!! I absolutely love North Carolina, I want to move down there in the future! Friendly people, southern charm, NASCAR, the mountains in the West, beaches on the East Coast, and typical flat farmland with trees throughout the rest of the state, I love it!!

I’ve lived right outside of Boston in Cambridge, MA and in Druid Hills (Atlanta) and I think the only superior thing about NC is the cost of living (and the more mild winters compared to the winters in MA). Aside from that, I’m personally not a huge fan. Everyone says “oh NC is so great because you’re 3 hours from the beach and mountains”....In MA, you’re never more than 30 min from the beach and mountains...
Maybe I’m just a medium-sized city gal, at heart. I agree that there’s not much of an east coast vibe here.

Regarding the culinary scene, Raleigh has the reigning James Beard national chef of the year, so there's that. Certainly it's no California, but the food scene isn't that dismal.
I went to Cali, it is NOT all that. Even with all the growth, NC has cleaner beaches.

The summer is hot as balls and high humidity! It will make you tough!
i have lived in texas and florida, both make raleigh summers seem pretty mild
nemesis656 Ive lived in Biloxi, MS, and ive spent a lot of time in Jacksonville FL. The humidity in those places is identical to coastal N.C. Raleigh isn’t quite as bad because the elevation helps

I have lived in north and south carolina mountains, and we have lots of living culture.
Lived in many cities on the east coast. NC is a pretty laid back place however it can make you lazy. If you have drive i highly recommend trying a different city. I have lived in wilmington, raleigh, and charlotte. Good for college and safe suburbs if you have a family. If you are single and money driven steer clear of N and S Carolina.
