Cool video! I was actually one of the Special FX artists on Halloween 5 who created all the prop butcher knives and safety weapons! Although I don’t particularly love the film it was still really awesome to be part of this franchise since the original Halloween is my all time favorite horror flick! But it’s still fun to go back and watch this and reminisce on some of the early FX work I did on films! Thanks for posting! Cheers🎃😄👍

@@LaytonEversaul Thanks so much! Hey if you’re interested, I’ve started to post videos on my UA-cam channel of some of my personal behind the scenes footage of FX work I did on movies! A few months ago I did a video on all the prop guns, weapons, and gadgets we created for Men In Black! I also included some secrets that were cut from the film! It’s a pretty fun video if you are a fan of Men In Black and into seeing “making of” footage of special FX work! Cheers😄👍

Pleasance has my respect, he loved the series and it shows. The only thing keeping him from the sequels was his actual death.
If only Betsy Palmer has returned to F13 3, 7, 9, X, and FvJ. That would have been some amazing continuity.
Pleasance's commitment to the role is what gives those first 5 Myers films a much needed throughline.

@@CarloisBuriedAlive yeah I do agree with this but I will say that I think the newer fans (especially those who have come in after or with H18) seem to totally disregard Loomis and see the series as being Laurie v Michael and 4-6 as all being awful. It's become quite a popular narrative - ironic since I much prefer Loomis to Laurie and find it quite telling that the vast majority of proposed scripts and indeed released spin off comics feature Loomis as opposed to Laurie. I also think 4-6 as an 'era' are far stronger than H20 - H18 (also really it's 1-6 not 4-6 but now I'm being pedantic).

I adore this movie and I love how dark and creepy it is. Don Shanks delivered one of the most physically imposing performances of The Shape EVER. When it comes to atmosphere and suspense those films (4-6) are hard to beat. Overall, the rooftop chase, the laundry chute scene and the tunnel chase are all three of the scariest suspense moments to be found anywhere in the franchise. They were worth the price of admission. We haven’t seen suspense along those lines since the gate scene in H20. Those scenes are the essence of what every Halloween film should aspire to. People pick on these films for the most superficial reasons (like the masks) but I adore the Thorn Trilogy. It’s the best timeline we ever got. If you interpret it correctly it can be canon to H20 and Resurrection. I classify the original eight as one timeline. The unattractiveness of the masks make them creepier to me. And to be fair, they’re supposed to be stolen cheap value masks; you know, the ones that change slightly every year. It all makes sense.

This movie was actually tense and scary from the Halloween party onward. Lots of good, intense interactions between Michael, Loomis, and Jamie. Danielle put in a great performance. And Don Shanks was an intimidating Michael. The movie just took way too long to get going. If they had had a clearer vision and didn't waste the first half on nonsense this could've been a great chapter in the series.

    • @GisherJohn24
      @GisherJohn24 2 роки тому +6

I don't hate it. But that mask. One of the reasons Michael was so creepy was the original Mask. We know it's Legendary.
But seriously. If you can't make the mask look like the original, I ask why didn't someone in the production crew have the brain or courage to get these masks fixed before filming. Like nobody noticed the mask looks nothing like the original? If you're going to put the original mask in the movie posters you sure as heck should get the actual mask to duplicate that.

Steve Miner really thought he was killing Jason in Friday the 13th Part 3/3D. Hence leaving him in the barn with an axe in his head.
Joseph Zito, the director of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter 😉 thought about having Jason's head explode. But he reasoned that Paramount would probably want to bring Jason back at some point, so they went with the machete to the head.

Without question, this is one of the best retrospectives I have EVER seen on UA-cam. You not only covered the history of the film, but offered real archive footage of the marketing AND the merchandise (aka soundtrack editions) which led me to make a purchase this morning. Suffice to say I'm also subscribing to your channel now. Can't wait to see others you've done.
I'll offer my perspective on how I feel about the movie. While some of the artistic choices earn the scrutiny they get in this installment, I chiefly blame H4 for the story quagmire H5 was forced to shoulder. H4? Yes. Let me explain.
It goes without saying H4 was essentially a very derivative film trying to reestablish the brand when Akkad rebooted the franchise based on the Myers narrative. After a quick throwaway explanation that asks us to believe Myers and Loomis could survive an explosion standing at ground zero, (never mind Myers eyes were also shot out), we're on to the cookie cutter story of a mad man loose in Haddonfield with a quirky addition of him being a DNA sniffer for those associated with his family.
The story plays out in classic Halloween tradition...until the end. And this is where the story gets muddied, which H5 has to contend with. People are quick to forget that Jamie Lloyd makes a "connection" with Myers in H4 by touching him while he lays wounded, which magically awakens him. In turn she adopts his knife wielding tendencies by attacking her foster mom while wearing nearly the same costume he did as a child.
Now while this might make for great cinema as a cliffhanger, it also completely derails Jamie Lloyd as a victim and places her in the new role as predator. The second problem - H4 completely botches the finale with Myers. Where exactly is he that Loomis is suddenly satisfied with his demise? That made absolutely no sense. Loomis would NEVER walk away from his body ( especially after everything those two have been through together) and just feel "okay" with the idea he's "buried and in hell". So H5 also has to explain what happen in that gap of reasoning.
So the complaints I hear about the connection between Jamie and Michael and the explanation for where Michael went is really a plot direction made in with H4, not Halloween 5. And honestly it plants the seeds to derail the franchise because H5 nor H6 can write they're way out of it. Michael can always find Jamie and she is now adopting his desire to kill. All H4 introductions.
H5 tackled one of these problems brilliantly, while stumbling on the other (IMHO). The writers had to backpedal on making Jamie a killer, so they WISELY made her a reluctant participant on this psyche connection which removes her from freely choosing to stab her foster mother. They further layer that by showing she suffers from severe trauma as a result of that episode and can not speak. People who do not like that need to realize the writers had to reestablish Jamie as a victim which is ALLOT to unpack!
If thats not enough, H5 now has to ALSO explain what happen to Michael. This too is problematic because they have to contend with where he's been while they put time on the shelf for Jamie to reach the stage she's at for the events to unfold in H5. Having him cared for by a hermit is an okay idea, but that needed to be flushed out better so there was guidance as to whether he was awake during that period, or was comatose the whole time. And did the cultic marking come from the hermit or did he always have it? Admittedly that whole scene was lazy (if not frustrating) and needed to be more refined. Another five or ten minutes of story there would have cleaned it up and given Myers a new and interesting backstory. That too would become a scripting landmine for Halloween 6.
In terms of the rest of the film, its more hits than misses. While I originally did not like the mask, it has grown on me and I think most of that comes from just how ridiculous it got in later editions. I think Myers became too stylized and self aware in future entries, which I don't feel happens here. He's a bit disheveled which honestly lends to his state of mind. Plus I LOVE the fact he wears another mask which also plays to that original idea which is he's toying with his victims.
I believe they overthought the house issue. If the director wanted those interior scenes he could have still done the majority of them with a tighter shot and just filmed different exterior scenes to match previous films. In terms of the cloaked figure, he would have been fine had they flushed him out better. But just as with the hermit, he looked thrown in there for cheap intrigue rather than actual plotting that would have a payoff.
So to conclude, I think Halloween 5, while certainly flawed, had allot to unpack to try and tell its own story. And in doing that, it was a mix bag of strong ideas, interesting ideas, and other introductions that didn't get another film time to be fully realized. I think if H4 had offered a cleaner handoff on the newly created characters, Halloween 5 could have continued a narrative that would have had fewer twists and turns. After H1 and H2, this is my favorite film in the series to watch, honestly because its not the same "lather-rinse-repeat" storyline that most of them follow. And I'm sick to my gills with the GI-Jane Laurie Strode character who has spent 40 years beating the shit out of Michael Myers. Halloween 5 tries to expand the narrative and say there is something more to this tired franchise than just a mental patient who can't catch ONE person.
No its not a hidden gem type of film. A much better director could have made an entirely better film even if they started with the same script. But it reminds me of a time when the franchise was more an open book and could still go anywhere instead of the fan-service movies it is today where they just exclude entries and make it up with zero continuity.

I love Halloween 5! I think the soundtrack by Alan Howarth is amazing. The performances by Donald Pleasence and Danielle Harris are great. And the cinematography , lighting, and art direction are fantastic. This movie still manages to create atmosphere and suspense, something lost on most of the films to follow. Yes, there are elements present that could be improved, but what is present is an intriguing story, some truly awesome set-pieces, and a mostly well-maintained IP (unlike other mismanaged sequels in the series). The Man in Black stuff needed more thought but it doesn't bother me that much. I would love to see a restored version with the missing sequences and excised gore reincorporated into the film (I'd love similar versions to all of the horror movies from the late 80's and early 90's that were heavily leaned upon by the MPAA). I'd rank it 5th in the series for me personally.

I've done my best with a variety of scripts and the film itself to pull together a cohesive story that works in tandem with its sequel. It follows the story beat for beat with minor alterations and massive character development. I'm super proud of it. It stretches almost 60,000 words. The rights holders have had no interest. They told me that not a few hours after sending an email via a publisher.

I am probably among the world's foremost enthusiasts of this film...I've loved it from the first time I saw it...and like my other favorite in the series, Halloween 2, have now seen it well into the hundreds of times...and STILL continue to find new things to appreciate. With regard to your novel...I think there is a great deal of interesting ground you could cover in dealing with Loomis. So many people have criticized his conduct in 5, while I personally only found him MORE appealing. The more obsessive, forceful Loomis we find here is like a culmination of all that has transpired...ESPECIALLY after the way he was handled in 4, when he was all but ELIMINATED from the final half hour of the film. Sure, he got the last scene, which was phenomenal, but he was omitted from the climactic battle with Myers. That was a profound mistake. In Halloween 5, the filmmakers basically acknowledged this fact. When Loomis is on the porch of the Myers house, watching all the police cars pull out..and he stops to say, 'Now you'll come, won't you, Michael'...it seems like a direct repudiation of the decision to leave him out of the finale in 4. It was like their way of saying, Loomis will take matters into his own hands...as it should have ALWAYS been. As a Loomis fan, I resented that he was left out of the action in 4...so I'd imagine that the man, himself, would have built an anger over this...and this might account for his shorter fuse, his greater intensity, and his more forceful manner this time out. He, himself, in 4, stated that the state police won't know how to stop Myers. He's BOUND to have resented that they and a bunch of rednecks in pickup trucks encroached on sacred cinematic ground...into territory that should have been EXCLUSIVELY his...But I would be interested to see your take on this. You say your work has deeper characterization, and since Loomis is one of the essential figures, I'm sure there is at least some penetration into his evolving attitude between the events of Halloween '88 and '89. In any event, I appreciate your effort. I love Halloween 5, and always enjoy hearing from people who share this affinity. 5 is not the most popular sequel, but those who like it...tend to like it A LOT. That's always been the case with me.

There's a few things wrong with Halloween 5 but there's also a few reasons why I like the movie overall and watch it after anytime I watch 4 which might be my favorite one. I grew up watching 5, like all the Halloween movies I enjoy it for different reasons. 5 has a few cool scenes and deaths. I like the combination between Donald Pleasence and Danielle Harris. That character chemistry I like better than anything going on with the characters in Halloween 2018 which is slightly overrated to say it's the second best one. I do agree the Michael prank was in bad taste, but I think Tina deep down was scared and thought she could use humor to convince herself everything was fine. You can see this is the case when Dr. Loomis is trying to convince her to stay with Jamie. She's crying and upset but brushes it off and tries to make a joke about "I'm never sensible if I can help it." and dances off like an idiot.

I remember sleepovers in high school with a bunch of friends watching Halloween 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 on VHS all night long. We usually tapped out at the start of this movie because it's just so dull. And also because the sun was usually coming up, but the movie is still dull.

I saw this once in the theaters and it took me years to give it another watch to see if my feelings had changed. They hadn't. Morbid curiosity compelled me to watch your treatment of the film, as I do enjoy your documentaries very much. Though I still hate this movie, I found what you had to say very interesting, and well done as always. I don't think I can ever watch 5 or Resurrection, again. Too many sins committed against the franchise. Thanks for a very entertaining and professional presentation, my friend.

Sins against the franchise? 5 comes the closest in the entire series to realizing the original premise.

Mr. Eversaul, I hope you will grant us a review of the Halloween reboot trilogy! I enjoyed 2018 and Halloween Kills but despise Ends. Am I alone? Cheers for the good work. Your channel contains, Hands down, the best and most in depth movies reviews I’ve seen.
