He takes innocents and places them in saw style traps. 4 example. Repeatedly electrocuting a woman until batman saves her.

I didn't like Riddle from The Batman they turned Riddler THE RIDDLER into a physical villain.
jackson wojnowski True, but I found the change quite enjoyable. The Batman creators tried to make The Riddler a formidable menace in both mental and physical aspects and Goth/Mayryn Manson look kinda worked for me

The Riddler in "The Batman" looks more like a Emo Riddler.
I actually heard a rumor that version of Riddler was originally going to be voiced by Marilyn Manson (which would explain the design), but he had to drop out, so they cast Robert Englund instead.

Actually.... That last riddle... Riddler's wrong about it. Someone who is a sleep-talker could answer "Yes" to "Are you asleep?" while sleeping. Admittedly it's a very unlikely thing but Unlikely does not mean Impossible.
A better answer to that Riddle would be "Are you dead?"

I think my favorite riddle of his was in Batman The Animated Series after Batman and Robin beat him in the Maze of the Minotaur Game. Riddler Says

That's why I always loved BTAS version of the Riddler. Even when you didn't know he was delivering riddles he was.
I love how he was animated in...animated. Just way he moved was so fluid compared to the slightly stiffer characters.
I love that in 2004 they just said "take this and twinkify it" and it was just immaculate. Some gourmet shit right there.

Just read a graphic novel and I'm impressed. In it, Nygma stepped up his game by using his perfect memory to duplicate the chemicals and inventions of various other villains (including Ivy and Scarecrow) and combined them into something that let him take control of the entire city for months!
Of course he has to leave himself the achillies heel by promising to give the city back if someone can solve his riddles.

I feel like the riddler would work better as a character like G-man from Half-life. Someone who stays out of the day to day power struggles but always knows things they shouldn't.

Ah. Edward Nigma. E. Nigma. The Riddler. Certainly one of, nay, perhaps my fav. Batman villain. He does not have nor focus on a certain factor of the mind, as Two-Face and Scarecrow do, but he is simply a 'villain' that focuses on the mind as a whole, but if any main section, that of memory and knowledge, the two most important pieces of the mind, aside from the Central Nervous System, that any being could have remain intact.

The is going to be a new Batman based TV series (and not a kids show either) called Gotham, a police proccedural showing the early career of Jim Gordan as a new cop to the GCPD before Batman appears but showing the early progression towards the later Superheros/Villians that will appear i.e. a teenage Bruce Wayne, a juvenille pickpocket Selena Kyle, Cobblepot as an underling to an established female mob boss (protrayed by Jada Pickett-Smith no less) and Edward Nygma (here cast as a forensic specialist with a penchent for puzzles).
I'm sad you left out him playing 20 questions with a shock cannon penalty.

kim bennett It's not the Riddler I despise, it's the specific riddle, "What question can you never answer 'yes' to?" It's a dumb riddle. First of all, you can say yes to any question, so it should say 'what question can you never truthfully answer 'yes' to?' Also, people talk in their sleep all the time, so truthfully, people can say yes to 'are you asleep?' The answer should be 'are you dead?' and the question should have 'truthfully' put in it to make any sort of logical sense. (I actually adore this Riddler, he's my favorite incarnation).
