  • www.sportaviati... -- While at E.A.A.'s Sun N Fun Convention held at the Lakeland Linder Airport in Lakeland Florida Dan Johnson had a chance to talk to Robert Baslee of Aerodrome Aeroplanes about his latest WW I replica aircraft the SE 5A.
This is Robert's 25th year in business and the SE 5A is his 25th aircraft design. Robert has build a number of WW I replica aircraft over the years. Many including this SE 5A have gone on to star in movies including "Amelia" and "Flyboys".
The SE 5A was also order for a movie which will be shot in the Arizona desert, but based on action that happened in Europe.
The SE 5A kit takes about 450 hours to construct, with all of the welding done by the factory. The original SE 5A was powered by an eight cylinder engine, and the plane weighed in at over 1400 lbs. Robert's SE 5A replica come in at about half that weight and is powered by a four cylinder VW engine using a reduction drive. These powerplants are produced by Valley Engineering.
    Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a
    • The S.E.5 (Scout Experimental 5) was Designed by by the Royal Aircraft Factory in Farnborough.
    • It was built around the new 150 HP Hispano -- Suiza engine.
    • The first prototype flew on 22 Nov 1916.
    • The S.E.5a was known in service as an exceptionaly strong aircraft with very good lateral control at low speeds. The S.E.5a was inherently stable making it an excellent gunnery platform while being quite maneurverable. While not as agile as the Camel in a tight dog fight it was much easier to fly particulary for novice pilots.
    • In total 5,265 Se5's were built by six manufactures 38 of these Austin --built S.E.5a were assigned to the American Expeditionary Force with the 25th Aero Squadron.

For a long time I had given up on my dream of actually becoming a pilot. But now I've been talking to an instructor, and my wife and my dad are very supportive of this idea.
It was honestly, learning about Airdrome Aeroplanes, specifically his Dr1, that got me back into wanting to do it. The idea of building my own airplane like this is thrilling, and I cant wait.

Have you become a pilot? It's the most fun I've ever had.

Love the Ford 302 Valve Cover bolted to the sides.

Mr. Baslee needs more microphone volume- his voice just doesn't carry. Very hard to hear him. He does however have a great company that sells dreams of a life time. Those aircraft are simply outstanding. I can't build but can fly and love to have any one of his creations. I hope that his company can someday make a full size Albatross-my favorite.

They don't just sell aeroplanes, they sell dreams.

      Cosmetic replica? Works for me.

well replica isnt necessarily 100% scale....i thought i read somewhere that they use same parts(fuselage) for different models to save mfgs costs...then with those limitations you have to change here and there to resemble what your building and still have good flying qualities.

Then be quiet, and don't fly it. Call it whatever you want, it's beautiful.

Replica? Absolutely ... uh ... NO! If it were a replica you couldn't tell the difference between it and the real thing EXCEPT maybe if you were an expert with a very discriminating eye. This would best be described as a mock up or imposter or a mimic.

How about a modernization replica? The changes are things done to make it a safer, less maintainance, and longer lasting plane than the original. And they have tried to stay as true as they can to the original, and keep the cost reasonable at the same time. Would you take an original or this modernized reproduction for your own plane to fly? I personally would take the safety and ease of maintenance of the reproduction.
