When I was a kid the scene where Hedorah flew over the city emitting its toxic fumes freaked me right the hell out! Watching all those people just drop to the ground and dissolve into green skeletons was enough to make Hedorah one of my top ten kaiju.

One of my very favorite Showa era kaiju, if not my favorite. I love this movie, since it's not typical Godzilla fare of the time; it's much creepier and darker in comparison, more brutally violent--as evidenced by Godzilla's injuries suffered while fighting Hedorah--and the score is spare and menacing to go along with it. Not to mention, even though drug laws in Japan are draconian compared to America, you have to wonder what the filmmakers were tripping on when they were making this movie. Obviously some good stuff! If they weren't on drugs, I dunno what to tell you, man! Fun fact: Banno-san got his revenge on Tomoyuki Tanaka by having a directing credit on the 2014 Legendary Pictures Godzilla, because as the story goes, Tanaka-san was so profoundly angered by the end product of "Godzilla vs. Hedorah" that he declared to Banno-san's face "YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DIRECT ANOTHER GODZILLA MOVIE AS LONG AS I LIVE!" From a hospital bed, no less.
