I was very surprised when you said “do something cool” and he went with something he learned in BJJ. But it was indeed cool! 😂😂
That's because all the cool moves are in BJJ! 😜😂
@@ArmchairViolence And apparently shared by capoeira lol (tesoura/scissor takedown)
That was pretty great
He learned that on youtube
Great to see and hear you guys working with the fit to fight team!!
Mike: "Do something cool!"
Me: *immediately goes for the most absurd takedown I know*
Kani Basami, or crab claws takedown. Tried this in judo and got some weird looks :D
@RAWSNL While it can be dangerous, using it safely isn't all that difficult. It just takes a few adjustments and a little bit of caution.
Most people shouldn't do it in their first week, but I hardly think that anyone would need to wait until black belt to learn it.
Anyone that can't practice basic safety probably shouldn't even be promoted past white belt lol. (That's SLIGHT hyperbole, but you get the point)
Killer name! 💯
@@Matt90Nine I would say that tani-otoshi probably lands you in a BETTER position but it doesn't look as cool, so it's USELESS! 😂
Alright, now I'm actually thinking of putting out a video on how to do the scissor sweep better. Because there are a few details that make it a lot safer and, apparently, no one knows them.
Wait, are people taught to do this move WITHOUT first getting good control of their opponent?!? No wonder this move is viewed as dangerous! That's like teaching people to fire a gun without aiming!
Not sure what it's called but this immediately made me think of that leg scissors takedown
Dude that statement at the beginning was so wise.
Wish every class said this so lesser skilled peeps didn't feel bad
I found it odd that he regards helping other people as meaning you aren't getting your best training. Teaching is the fastest way to learn. There's evidence for this. So it's a win-win, not a win- please be a good person.
@@neildutoit5177 I think the crux of what he is getting at is your workout isn’t going to be as good going with someone unskilled. When I work with new white belts it’s a slow process and when we roll it’s not as technical, fun, or even a good workout. But it is important for me to work with those white belts to help them out.
Spitting straight truth in the beginning man
"Less skilled guys have fun"
*gets scissor swept*
"NOT LIKE THAT"
Mike is like the Elder in the Village who also has a knife collection . The dude that gives you random wise words while eating fruits off a knife .
Thank you for this
"Do something cool"
Fuckin nailed it.
This peek into Mike’s seminar makes me want to live near his gym
I know that feeling.
And I live in the UK!!!
That was a sweet Scissor Sweep
yea but dangerous too
@@haydenford9587 he did ask for something cool
@@haydenford9587 Yeah. I know Jake is a very talented grappler in Mike's own words and no doubt confident in his abilities to pull that off, but there's a reason that technique is banned in multiple competitive rulesets. I'd hesitate to use that in friendly sparring, much less in a shits-and-giggles demonstration. I can't say that it wasn't fucking cool as hell, though. As an outsider looking in it's not really my place to judge and I'll readily give Jake the benefit of the doubt and assume he knew what he was doing in going for that, but man it makes me incredibly nervous seeing it.
Absolutely love this video and everything you touched on, coach 👍
"I got a fight in 17 months one day."
Dying, because this guy exists in every gym.
and he has his walkout song picked out.
@@hard2hurt But, which Disturbed track is it? Gotta show everyone how "hardcore" you are. 🤣
@@Hexenhammer bro I will be popping some electroswing trumpet shenanigan that no one spects. You catch them first in the song, then in the ring xD😆
@@Hexenhammer It's from their newest album because their taste is sh*t XDD
Mike, I'll echo everyone else here and give you massive props for that intro "speech".
I'm partnered with Black Sheep Boxing & Muay Thai down here in Austin, TX and that is the mentality we impress upon our students/members, especially since we work with a lot of people in early recovery from addiction.
Thank you for your channel and your content. It's always entertaining yet informative. Oss! 🙏🏻❤🤘🏻💯
Mike, you have a lot of charisma and seem like an excellent teacher. I wish I could experience it, but I live in eastern Europe, so we'll never meet in person
Never say never.
Mike seems like a damn good Jeet Kune Do practitioner even though he doesn't claim to be one. He encourages you to learn from a variety of sources. Be open but use critical thinking. Pressure test, and make things your own. That's some Bruce Lee stuff right there.
I'm basically the same thing as Bruce Lee.
I love it! I do the same thing at my BJJ classes knowing I'll lose the takedown game but keeping in mind my striking options and not letting it upset me in the meantime
I went to a bjj gym one-day, the students helped me out, and I had a good time, but the teacher was disrespectful, I have heard he's got skill, and it didn't hurt my feelings, but I have no need to pay the price he was asking to be spoken to like that.
Yeah the top requirement for being a martial arts instructor isn't customer service... it's not even being a good instructor... it's not even being good at sales.
Depends what you mean by disrespectful maybe you're just fucking up and dont know how to take criticism
I know a boxing coach like these, who trains for MMA and make just lesson to have money.
He looks down on weak men, he is a lot on his phone...
So I stopped his lessons, like you I don' t need these.
So glad I was able to make it to this seminar in person! Can't wait for the next one
It went so well I hope to be back up there soon.
Man I wish I could train here. Mike's fight philosophy is spot on. IMHO
OMG that scissors takedown was amazing! Really liked this video :D
"Do something cool!"
*BJJ MODE ENGAGED*
This video is worth it for the first minute and 30 seconds alone. Great job excellent point
Great video Mike, thank you! One of the best pieces of advice I have ever heard when it comes to Brazilian jujitsu you said in this video, when you said “you don’t win a roll”. I had a guy literally bear hugging my legs for five minutes once. Guess how much I got out of that actual experience… I won’t say I learned nothing, because I did learn that I could keep myself from punching someone in the top of the head no matter how badly I wanted to. 😁
Those sparring sessions are useless and those dudes need some self confidence…small dick energy wanting to *dominate* every session
Lessons are lessons
"I got a fight coming up in 17 months one day"
That one hurts Mike 😂, I live in NY and Covid pretty much killed the amateur circuit here. Wish I could come to one of these man, the whole atmosphere seems so chill it's crazy. Wish gyms were like this. Truly does depend on the coaches, they make the gym what it is. Been in some toxic gyms, so I can definitely appreciate the way you conduct these.
Just gotta say it, this first minute was some of the most inspiring martial arts content i ever saw on youtube. Coming from a Karate Dork: Oss.
Each one reach one. Absolutely should help your buddy if they’re struggling
Damn. Didn't expect u here. Now we just need Yuchub and Catural Hypertrophy.
I am not prone to saying this other men but I really like you Mike lol, the way you set the boundaries immediately and make newcomers feel welcomed.
You think thats sexy huh…
Compliment men more often, they need it bro
@@tristankendrick2582 Judging from the comments above yeah lol... I just don't really give a flying f**k lol, say it how I see, it's other people's weakness and insecurity, not mine lol but appreciate the non douche response.
@@VileCAESARB hey man thats ok, mike looks really sexy on that fit sporting shirt for me too...
@@carlosandres1835 Haha why are all you degenerates trying to transfer your latent attraction to men onto me :P For me, for an ex cop he seems a cool dude, that's where my interest peaks haha
You can train in your backyard like Michael Carbajal did. U.S. Olympic boxing medalist and professional champion. And that was late 80s early 90s before there was so much information
Without knowing this, Mike had given the BEST reason of learning Aikido for Self Defence 😃
Thanks Mike!!!!!
This is probably one of the most important self-defense vids you have made IMO.
Learning from Mike IRL is outstanding. If you get the opportunity, do it!
Thank you my friend.
I posted a video earlier today about going to this seminar. How crazy 🤪 is that. Super cool that I made it in your video ( 1:05 ) a couple of times.
I would love to see a video on near-sighted self defense - i.e. standard eyeglasses vs. sport/safety eyeglasses vs. contact lenses. Thanks!
Easily one of the wisest set of things I've heard about martial arts, as a whole.
Thank you.
I’ve done karate for 20+ years.
It was almost entirely focused on self defense, and we had sparring, but the sparring was essentially just sloppy MMA.
Eventually started an MMA class where I trained (my only actual fighter went 2-1).
Fast forward roughly a decade and I’m doing hospital security and protecting myself and others an average of once per shift and engaging in physical conflicts with people trying to be violent at some level….do you know what training prepared me most for those situations?
My ‘combat sport’ training. The ‘self defense’ training at least from the physical side was shit at preparing me for real world violence, and it was what seemed to be very common type of training for ‘self defense’ in karate at least based on what I saw….
So moral of the story I guess self defense training is more mindset than physical, and you can substitute any physical training in and out of the self defense mindset and be successful.
Efficiently and effectively said 🙏🏾. In addition I use class time to practice other important skills - timing, precision, different body types etc. In the context of self preservation.
This was a great video.
I've found that an informal fight club/ home training group is a good way to integrate all the classroom stuff. I've got friends who do all sorts of stuff, and we get together, compare notes, practice using it in self defense contexts, using verbal/MUC skills, e.t.c
Mike try's to be such a gruff guy, but he is such a good teacher
"Do something cool" famous last words
Looks like a awesome seminar :)
Would love to train with you one day. Love your honest no bs outlook on this topic
This was really fun to see you lead a group :D love how the dude took the "do something fun" to the fullest, so fking cool! You guys are making it so fun :D
Love it. This perspective comes through in most of your videos and it's why I subscribe to your channel
Ed is awesome! He definitely was the guy that gave me more than an hour learning to be better.
One of my now favorite speeches with some laughs in between
Glad I was there, and it was some great and inspiring words. And facts
Chriss hauter bjj legend said it best ... train sport. Think self defence studay the art n make it your own...
Great message mike!
I knew this from the podcast days, but i think it's a very important subject that isn't addressed enough
That starting speech is so true.
Will the whole seminar be posted? I would love to go to one but im in the UK 😔
I believe it will be available on teachable soon
I never really went into the sport based aspect of martial arts, so this video was really informative. Thanks!
What a nice looking school. 👌 😅 Loved this seminar.
the first two minutes of this video made me smile, looks fun there
H2hurt in the wild. Great video you continue to evolve. Tons of value and only thing we need to do is click and subscribe, small price.
I love your attitude coach.
That was a slick Scissor Sweep! But I was training it with a newb and he scissored me forward in stead of backwards causing all my weight to go on my left ankle spraining it.
Nice full class. Good to see.
As someone who has never rolled or grappled, that take down at the beginning was terrifying. What the hell was that?
Its mentioned in the comment section over an over. How could you miss it? You are using yt on your phone right?
@vantor looks like you missed the first part of this video.
its called kani basami or a scissor takedown
@@hard2hurt I watched it and it was good. I am just currious about why people ask basic stuff thats answered many times and is easy to check. Have a nice day Mike. :-)
@@Seraphim262 So you watched it but didn't take it in.
I'm from Colombia, and i wish go to USA one day and be in one class with icy Mike. Sorry for my English
Esta perfecto tu inglés👌
I am proud to say that the seminar in this video took place at my dojo. Shout out to Sifu Ed!
Being the stronger one also teaches you about restraint, patience and sometimes, when they're stronger but less skilled you practice about proper blocking.
Also sometimes when you see someone else do it the "wrong way" you realise what makes some moves work all over again
I definitely try to help whoever my partner is. Even if I struggle with the move myself, I see what the coach is showing and I can guide my partner through it. But then fumble when it's my turn. Lol. Not always, but sometimes.
I was at this seminar, and can see myself in this video!!
Can't wait to get back up there!
Hey Mike I’m the kid who was there
"do something cool"
me:huh- WAIT NOT THE KANI BASAMI THE DESTROYER OF KNEES
My walkout song is the nintendo wii mii theme music
That "Oh God" moment 🤣
That's a nice big class! Congrats.
Based on my own personal experience training self-defense in primarily sports-based martial arts gyms, it's all up to you to adapt what you've learned from training there in real-life self-defense scenarios.
seems like a really fun seminar
I'm still thinking of my walk out song. It's been 10yrs
bro u litteraly did an Aikido movement at 03:35 LOL xD
Man I whish I could train with this guy...great vid.
Mindset, goals in exercise/training
No.. it’s foolish to think that will get you through. It will give you a CONTROL ABILITY though. Absolutely key to self defense. So it has an unintended benefit..
Great presentation sir
excellent vidlesson
Everything here is spot on. I genuinely feel like Icey Mike is one of the realest ppl doing MA vids on youtube. Is that the guy from armchair violence? I like his videos a lot... but damn does he only ever wear batman shirts?
Yes and yes.
Your BEST video !
But Gracie jiujitsu starts standing up and it has strikes along with the grappling... I do Gracie Jiujitsu and self defense it's a great part of class ..
Ok.
Yes, yes and yes.
Helping others does extract more
bro that talk at the beginning is fax
A lot of wisdom in under 10 minutes
Fantastic video
Man... test a Torch Lighter for self defense Pleeeeeease
Pay it forward! 😁

Mike, I have a question that's not really much related to this video, but I hope you will read this comment.
How do I *mentally* prepare myself for violence?
I'm a guy that has some experience with boxing and BJJ and currently I'm not even that small at 78 kgs.
My BJJ and boxing classes didn't change shit in terms of how I *mentally* react to violence.
Even though I would probably beat the shit out of average Joe, my mind goes back to feeling like a little scared girl... hell, even when a drunk angry guy is screaming on the street. Well, maybe that was a slight exaggeration.
I suspect this problem has something to do with my past issues, childhood and mental background and I don't expect you to turn into a psychotherapist for me.
But since you know your shit about violence and self defense and you even used to be a police officer, you actually seem like one of the most competent people to ask this question.
Don't you think it's an excellent idea for a topic of s video? ;)
i know u didnt ask ME but if u arent confortable hurting someone, or being hurt yourself, then do not engage in violence, this is your conscience preventing u from doing something u will regret. If i really need to resort to it, it will be your last last last resort, which is a good thing imo. I agree its a great topic for a video tho, i think people overlook this aspect of self-defence training.
@@uuh4yj43 thanks for the response man, I wish Mike read my comment and considered making a video on this topic
Dang brother, you got Cung Le'd by the kid... Nice!
This summer, I will add BJJ to my boxing training.
Also mike you ever going to do a seminar in the heart land?
You could apply that Jiu Jitsu logic of non engagement to every martial art. You could run away from stand up all day but you need to `play the game’ to actually learn. Just a comment, love the channel.
Is that a serious question? Your punching, kicking, and wrestling. That’s the core of all fighting.
There is no place to train boxing wh err e I live
golden
Nicely sir.
Sound advice.
Your legit! 👏
