The Spirit of '45 is Ken Loach's new documentary about the 1945 general election and the creation of the welfare state by Clement Attlee's Labour government. Loach tells Andrew Pulver why a feeling of group ownership was so important in the postwar years and how that ideal still rings true today.
Ken Loach will be part of a panel discussion at a special screening event broadcast across 40 cinemas on Sunday 17 March. For more details visit the Spirit of '45 website. The Spirit of '45 is released by Dogwoof on 15 March 2013.

I was shocked when I realized that the film can be applied to the Bosnian situation, almost entirely. Well yes , English lords were our advisors. We are now unemployed , miserable and hungry. Thank you Ken Loach, your movie opens eyes

Being 54 and coming from a Labour background I was brought up on The Spirit Of 1945, those wonderful social economic interventions by that pioneering Labour Government have been undermined by numerous Conservative governments ... "Its time for Labour" to get back into government and renew That Spirit Of 1945!

These memories are precious, and we need to recall what was done then, and do it now

Nothing empowers and emboldens people more than the knowledge that they fought for liberty and democracy, and won.
It’s been said, that politicians treat people like mushrooms- keep them in the dark and pile a lot of manure over them; but ‘the powers that be’ couldn’t very well deny the British people their rights after the War. In 1945, those who half a decade before had been too timid to stand up for themselves, were now powerfully aware of their contribution to their country- and to the world.
Great documentary, saw it in Athens. Kudos, Mr. Loach! It was especially inspiring to hear our dearly missed Tony Benn once more.
    Greetings from Greece!

Between 1945-51 the Labour government used conscript troops to break strikes, imposed pay restraints, tried to use out of date laws to have trade unionists jailed, did the same in order to jail strikers, supported the Hiroshima bomb, bailed out bankrupt industries by nationalising them, brought in the first NHS charges, jailed African independence leaders and detained Spanish Anti-Fascists in appalling conditions leading to the death of one of them and the mental breakdown of the rest- An awful record if you ask me and nothing to do with Socialism.

No offence but Winston Churchill was the greatest prime minister this country has ever had. My grandparents and others love the guy.

daz samuels None taken. He was the right mad for the War but not for the peace. His record before the war was blemished by Galipoli - where Atlee was wounded and when he set the troops on the Tonypandy miners. His party also did nothing to alleviate the suffering in the 1930's .
In May 1945 people had had enough of the old world and wanted to build a new one from the ashes of the 2nd great war. Churchill and the Tory party did not see that and so were dumped.
Watch the film, it's a polemic yes, but it does capture the spirit of the time. That of dread of the past and hope for the future.
