The ACA release has both the JP and English versions, rapid-fire options and various control setups. Three-button setup, Left Stick/D-Pad or Mix & Match? Flexible options for gamepads and arcade sticks, be it traditional or leverless! In the Preference Settings, you can assign any character by default in single player mode, regardless of controller ports. Stick with Sharon anyway! The Hi Score and Caravan Modes are slightly different here. The former lets you select any event like a practice mode against default qualifying scores, while the latter bypasses the name entry and tutorials as you attempt to clear as many events within five minutes. Don't hurt yourself in the pursuit of having fun! TepidSnake of Gaming Hell and Kimimi wrote some exceptional articles about the games, too. Just as Namco Month came to a close, Hamster has another mystery Namco game for May 15th - the 10th Anniversary of the Arcade Archives series. Stay tuned!

The conclusion of Hamster's Arcade Archives Namco Month is upon us, so without further ado... *We'll show you the best events!* The 1993 release Numan Athletics is an arcade sports game that used the Namco NA-2 platform, home to Emeraldia (the only NA-1 backwards compatible game), Knuckle Heads, Nettou! Gekitou! Quiztou!! Quiz Island and X-Day 2. Four "modern-day supermen" called Numans - Sharon L'Halles (France), Harry Boffin (USA), Masaemon Nakamura (Japan) and Bongo Tembo (Kenya) - take part in eight unusual events. This is done by 1-4 players mashing buttons according to each event. To clear an event, at least one player must earn enough points, otherwise they must insert another credit to retry with lower quotas. After each round, the players' scores are tallied assuming there's at least two active, and the one with most points (or simply clearing the game alone) wins.

As it happens, Sharon was the breakout character who appeared in the sequel Mach Breakers. And who wouldn't pick Sharon? Exactly! It's lamentable Numan Athletics never saw a home release, in contrast with Sega's DecAthlete & Winter Heat seeing ST-V to Sega Saturn ports. Indeed Namco and Sega's offerings were the few arcade multi-event sports games released in that period. Konami's Hyper Sports: Track & Field series continued to diminished returns; Sumo Digital did an admirable effort with New International Hyper Sports DS (2008), while Konami attempted to revive the series with the now-cancelled Hyper Sports R for Nintendo Switch (2018-2020). As reissues go, Numan Athletics appeared on Wii Virtual Console (April 28, 2009 in JP) and Hamster's Arcade Archives for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch (April 25, 2024 worldwide + Asia).

Let's kick off the beginning of May with Taito's 1987 action platformer role playing video game Rastan Saga (or just plain old Rastan as it was known here in North America) that will hit the Arcade Archives this week. Directed, produced and partly programmed by Yoshinori Kobayashi, Rastan Saga takes inspiration from the Conan the Barbarian series of fantasy novels, comics and even movies, and places you in the loincloth of the titular barbarian named Rastan.
A huge commercial success at the time of release, Rastan would be ported to a wide range of formats, including the Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Sega Master System, MSX2,, ZX Spectrum, MS-DOS and Apple IIGS.
Rastan Saga II (AKA Nastar and Nastar Warrior) followed in 1988, while Warrior Blade: Rastan Saga Episode III would arrive in 1991. Then, there is an emulated version of Rastan, which is available as part of the Japanese-only Taito Memories for the PS2 in 2005, followed by a Western-only compilation Taito Legends for the PS2 and Xbox and Taito Legends Power-Up released in Japan and select PAL regions in 2006, and in North America in 2007 for the PSP. It was also available on Anstream Arcade for the Xbox One and Series X|S, the Taito Egret II Mini and the Taito edition of the Super Pocket (from a brand of UK Evercade developer Blaze Entertainment, Hyper Mega Tech!) in 2020, 2022 and 2023, respectively.
Beyond that, Rastan has sadly been committed to the mists of time by Taito; the 2002 PS2 and GameCube title Barbarian was released in Japan by Taito as Warrior Blade: Rastan vs. Barbarian, but it's not an official sequel as such. In fact, the game has nothing to do with Rastan despite the title. Luckily, Japanese video game publisher Hamster has revealed that the game released on May 15th - marking the 10th anniversary of the Arcade Archives series - will be a special Namco title, and of course, I really REALLY do hope for the 1993 release of Tinkle Pit (another Namco NA-1 running arcade title). Not sure if that will ever make it, but we'll just see what happens.
Now, while fans of the Super Pocket got a Western release of Rastan, how come the Arcade Archive users only got a Japanese version? And on top of that, how are they different from each other, apart from the Japanese version containing the storyline, whereas the Western version does not have? Stay tuned as we find out tomorrow on Arcade Archives.

    Four incredible superhumans!
    8 incredible competitions!
"NUMAN ATHLETICS" is an sports game released by NAMCO (Bandai Namco Entertainment) in 1993.
Choose one of the four superhumans [Newman] and win a total of 8 types of competitions.
Each competition has a NEED value, and unless you exceed that record, you will not be able to clear the competition and move on to the next competition.
The "Arcade Archives" series has faithfully reproduced many classic Arcade masterpieces.
Players can change various game settings such as game difficulty, and also reproduce the atmosphere of arcade display settings at that time. Players can also compete against each other from all over the world with their high scores.
Please enjoy the masterpiece that built a generation for video games.
*The options menu and manual are available in Japanese, English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish.
    * There are some scenes with intense blinking, because we respect the original and reproduce it as it is.
Please make the room bright and keep away from the screen while playing the game.
