Great video. One of the best I’ve seen explaining stealth.

I'm surprised we were doing it correctly, still, this is very helpful to show new players.

Fantastic explanation of a strangely complicated concept. Thank you.

Great guide to stealth, really appreciate it. I wanted to make a multiclass wizard with 2 rogue to get the cunning action to run and hide. Your explanation makes me realize I can bring my concept to the table. Thank you so much!

Keep these coming! Getting ready to DM a 5e campaign - used to DM way back in AD&D days (80's & 90's) so just coming up to speed with the new rules. (So much has changed even if it's mostly simpler.) The examples are particularly helpful.

Great video. Really helped clear up the Invisibility and Hide relationship for me.
One difference for when I GM, I don't use passive perception as a lower limit for active checks. I just rule that Passive Perception is used to detect moving things (like surprise attacks or rogue trying to get into cover) while Active Perception is used to detect unmoving things, like a trap or a rogue that's waiting in hiding.

Thanks for this; my group and I realized there was several things we were doing wrong.

I hadn’t considered the perception thing where active can only help from passive.
One thing I have done differently is giving PCs a stealth check when the first gain invisibility so you don’t have to cast the spell then use the hide action in combat. It might make invisibility even better than it is usually.

So much to say... I liked the video ❤
Why do you nerf the Hide Action for no reason? Like, is there any reason?
Hide Action is alreayd limited to what it can do and how you can use it.
-You can hide in the open or from a creature who can clearly see you. (yes, I added the first part because it makes sense, can't hide in Dim Light)
-You either need to be behind Cover or be Obscured by something to Hide.
-You must succeed Stealth Roll against Passive Perception and might fail.
-The benefits you get can be gained else where which are stronger.
So why do you nerf hiding?
-I could not find any rule stating you can't hide behind the same rock each turn?
-The Stealth Roll in combat is against Passive Perception.
-Enemies must take Search Action to roll Perception against Stealth Roll.
-If Enemy yells "Rogue is there!" The rogue don't magically stop being hidden.
-Out of Combat 14:20 you can approach the Goblin because you have stated it is poking a body of a dead bandit, Quill is not revealed just because he stepst open. Additionally Quill could say that he waits for the opportunity when the Goblin is not looking and then moves quietly next to the goblin before attacking making the attack with advantage.
You stated that the Goblin was poking a dead bandit? That means the Goblin by DEFAULT is distracted and as we are not in combat the part about creature usually sees you approaching was only for combat.
the Goblin was stated to be poking at the body of dead bandit. Quil can sneak behind the Goblin without being seen because the Goblin was stated to be paying attention to something else. You can't say "the goblin is looking away" and then "he sees you because you came out in the open!"
What benefit do you even get if you did take Hide Action and Succeeded the unlikely Stealth Roll?
+ You can't be targeted by spells that require to see you? So you can get hit by Fireball and Firebolt and Eldritch Blast. A lot of spells don't require you to see.
+ Attacks against you have disadvantage, including spells that require Attack Roll.
+ Your next attack is with Advantage and after it hits or misses you are no longer hidden.
+ As long you don't stand in the open of are clearly seen by a creature you were hidden form you can move as much as you want on your turn.
+ You can use other Actions on your turn while hiding unless DM decided that you would make too much sound. Lockpick a Lock, Drink a Healing Potion or even cast a spell without Verbal Component.
? Unclear if Command counts as "attacking" becasue it is spell that requires safe if Sorcerer used Subtle Magic to cast Command?
There are better options, so why even nerf Hiding?
! If you are behind Total Cover you can't directly be targeted by spells. Oh, kinda like Hiding but better? Neither Fire Bolt nor Eldrich Balst can hit you nor any direct attack.
! Dodge enemies attacking you have Disadvantage.
! Cast any spell is bretty much better. Even cantrips, espesially if you use Hide Action to get Advantage is the same as casting True Stirke.
! Attack twice! Crossbow Expert using Hand-Crossbow or two Daggers you get to attack twice and potentially do twice the damage which is just better than just getting advantage. You might crit twice by rolling two 20s!
! move 30ft from full cover, rage attack, dash bonus action back to full cover. You lose your advantage but you can't be directly targeted by any attack.
Some people play that roll of 20/1 is Critical success/failure which makes Stealth even less reliable becasue now there is random 5% chance that you just fail "even master fails sometimes" yeah, that is why creatures who roll high can sometimes find you! Most people I know that use Crit 1 fails on Ability Check also accidentally rule it as Fumble as something bad happens instead of just "oh, the fist creature saw you, now what?" like rolling 1 on Stealth Roll "you step on pucket and make a lot of noice alterting close by guard to your presence."
lvl 2 Rogue can every turn attempt to hide behind Cover or if they are obscured by something. If they succeed the Stealth Roll against Passive Perception they are Hidden to a creature and gain advantage on their next attack. If enemy wants to see them they can use their action to Search them. Any additional rules to make Hiding harder in Combat are directly nerffing Hide Action which already is almost always worst option because it can fail unlike Steady Aim from Rogue or just using Crossbow Expert feat to attakc twice before moving behind full cover.

"In case of a tie, the enemies win". Not necessarily. Per Chapter 7->Ability Checks->Contests, If the contest results in a tie, the situation remains the same as it was before the contest. If the enemy was not aware of the PC before, the enemy is not aware of the PC after a tie. If the enemy was aware of the PC before, but they have conditions to hide, the enemy continues to be aware after a tie.

if someone hides successfully, do they get to attack that round or do they need
to wait until their next turn to attack?

Good video, but should really be called "Basics of Hiding" instead of "Basics of Stealth"
There is so much more than just Hiding that can be done with Stealth checks.
