These people voted to become a part of Russia after many years of diplomatic efforts by Russia to have Ukraine stop their shelling and missile strikes on the population of the Donbass region failed to bring peace leaving Russia little choice but to launch a military intervention! Thankfully Russia has gone to great lengths to avoid civilian deaths in Ukraine and as I said in my original comment Russia has offered peace talks from the outset!
