Top 20 Composers 1. Bach 2. Mozart - Beethoven (depends on how you feel about opera) 4. Bartok 5. Brahms 6. Ravel 7. Stravinsky 8. Chopin 9. Haydn 10. Schoenberg - Debussy (depends on how you feel about serialism) 12. Schubert 13. Puccini // Verdi (It really comes down to libretto taste) 14. Ligeti 15. Wagner 16. Rachmaninoff 17. Tchaikovsky 18. Palestrina 19. Mahler 20. Gershwin Before you ask: no, Liszt and Paganini should not be on the top 20. They are by far the best improvisers, but provided very little to compositional technique and philosophy than to the understanding of the extremities of their respective. Secondly, yes, Ligeti absolutely deserves to be on this list. Ligeti is an orchestration magician (and dare I say a better orchestrator than Stravinsky gasp). Honestly, from 6 down you can move them around and maybe substitute for sain saens or even Clara Schumann, up to you. Personally, I think it's ridiculous to even include John Williams on this list, let alone place him ABOVE Holst who literally is the foundation for his best orchestration and melodies lmao
Gershwin is a joke compared to the great composers of this list. Bartok and Ligeti also never belong anywhere near the top 20. Apart from that, your list ok.
Patrick Häuser Ravel considered Gershwin better than himself. He is literally the definer of American music for the following 50 years. There has been no composer like him since. Bartók is similarly in the same vein as Schoenberg. His influence on 20th century music is enormous and his compositions, at times, top Mozart in their craft and calculation. If I could I’d put him higher (study music for strings, percussion and celeste and you’ll see why I put him there). I genuinely believe that the only people who don’t think Ligeti is at least top 20 have never played or score-studied Ligeti before. I can’t say enough about his incomparable originality, complexity, simplicity, and incredible textural nuance which make him, for me, arguably top 10. I don’t think anyone could disagree with me on his orchestration skills.
Patrick Häuser Handel I understand being in top 20. To me it’s just personal preference at that point (I despise his operas and have performed so much Handel that at this point he’s an obligation and not a passion). But, if this was top 21, I’d consider him there :)
Wagner? Because he thought that he was the greatest, that doesn't make him great. Not in comparison to Mendelssohn and Brahms, whom he envied and talked bad of.
@@Nikioko wagner had nothing to envy from Brahms or Mendelssohn, his criticism of them was more than justified. And what Wagner believed is irrelevant, he was a really good composer, not the greatest but one of.
There is a difference between "MY" favorite composers and "THE" greatest of all time. Everyone has their favorites but if we are being objective about things, it's Bach at One. Go look at the quotes from almost every great composer. Look at the influence he had on modern music. Look at the sheer unimaginable scope of his works and the sheer genius he displayed. Chords that literally wouldn't appear in music until 200 years after his death. He is number one and that is not just my opinion.
Yes. Bach on 10 is ridiculous. Cross out the zero, then you get it right. Mozart and Beethoven on 2 and 3 - in any order - is also correct. The rest is arguable.
@@mrmxyzptlk8906 not really, Beethoven once called him the "immortal god of harmony" mozart appreciated his works a lot and also arranged some of bach's preludes and fugues into strings Honestly if you tell me that Beethoven is greater than bach I'll take it because they're equally great at least in my perspective
For Antonio Vivaldi #29 the music was not winter. It was presto from summer. My favorite composers are Beethoven, Mozart, Mussorsky, De Falla,Igor Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Vivaldi. I did very much enjoyed your list.
Their is a lot of them composers that are good but I think one of the greatest ones in my life time is John William’s *cheifs kiss* a masterpieces he’s done like Star Wars anyways I totally agree and with your list ❤️❤️❤️
All depends on personal preference. Personally I’m not the biggest fan of Bach, but he should be somewhere at the top. For me it would be: 1. Chopin 2. Beethoven 3. Liszt 4. Mozart 5. Schubert 6. Bach 7. Tchaikovsky 8. Rachmaninoff 9. Vivaldi 10. Debussy It’s a mix of personal preference and iconic.
Anybody else think it was strange that Glass and Part made the list but not Reich and Adams??? What about Feldman and Xenakis should have bumped some film guys too...IMHO
BACH NUMBER 10?????????????? I have nothing against Camille Saint-Saens, but how is he 4 ahead BACH? I think this guy was on something making this list.
I am working on a list as well but he is changing at the time so don't be mad if your favourite isn't in it: 44: Anton Bruckner 43: Ralph Vaughan Williams 42: Leonard Bernstein 41: Modest Moessorgski 40: Georges Bizet 39: Hector Berlioz 38: Jean Sibilius 37: George Gershwin 36: Richard Strauss 35: Aaron Copland 34: Camille Saint-Saëns 33: Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov 32: Karlheinz Stockhausen 31: Johann Strauss jr. 30: Edvard Grieg 29: Gioachino Rossini 28: John Williams 27: Arnold Schönberg 26: Giacomo Puccini 25: Antonio Dvorak 24: Robert Schumann 23: Béla Bartók 22: Felix Mendellsohn 21: Sergej Rachmaninoff 20: Claudio Montiverdi 19: Dmitri Shostakovich 18: Sergej Prokofiev 17: Maurice Ravel 16: Gustav Mahler 15: Franz Liszt 14: Antonio Vivaldi 13: Igor Stravinsky 12: Franz Schubert 11: Joseph Haydn 10: Georg Friedrich Händel 9: Claude Debussy 8: Johannes Brahms 7: Guiseppe Verdi 6: Richard Wagner 5: Frederic Chopin 4: Pjotr Illjitch Tchaikovsky 3: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1/2: Johann Sebastian Bach/Ludwig van Beethoven (I can't chose between this guys I've studied them both but they are so freaking tie)
Interesting list, My favorites are: 1. Scriabin 2. Rach 3. Ginastera 4. Schumann 5. Ravel 6. Bach 7. Prokofiev 8. Bartok 9. Liszt 10. Kabalevsky And I also love Shostakovich, Debussy, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Finzi and a lot more.
No overall criticism, because this is Markeli's Favourites, and his choice, not mine. For me, as an absolute learner, for 70 years, at #1 I would put someone I would not rate when I was in my 20s, Johann Sebastian Bach. 2nd because I have a soft-spot Schubert, and Purcell in the top 20. I suspect Jimi Hendrix would have rated George Frederick Handel somewhat higher, and one of the most played composer's in the world, Elgar is in my humble opinion, top 20. Also I would suggest to Markelli, that he listen to the brilliant Clara Schumann, before even rating her very average husband. Likewise, Felix Mendelssohn has this 'bloke' had his face up close to Fanny? She was like her brother, a favourite virtuoso and brilliant composer of Queen Victoria.
As a lover of Bach, there is no objective fact which has to put him at #1. Putting Mozart at #1 has its merits. So does Claude Debussy in my opinion. So does Tchaikovsky!
Shostakovich should be on the top 10. He was very prolific with 153 opuses, many of which were very long. He composed many beautiful and theoretically complex melodies. Utilized classical and chromatic harmonic approaches. Tied it all together with amazing maturity, orchestration, and form. He was one of the greatest counterpuntalists. He was the greatest polystylists, using classicism, romanticism, contemporary, jazz, folk, and more. He was able to craft them into a single and versatile idiom. It could be argued Schniktke was a better polystylist. He was more extreme, yet Shostakovich was more practical and all around superior. Due to the numerosity, complexity, maturity, diversity of his work, and his innovative polystylism, I believe him to be among the top 10.
5:58 Number 65, John Cage I tend to agree with Anna Russell's assessment of contemporary music: "The more off-key you become, the more contemporary it sounds. Nine out of ten don't understand it, and that tenth, you're never quite sure if they understand it, or if they just stand it because they think they're supposed to understand it. Only time will tell if the composer has achieved artistry far beyond mortal understanding, of if he's just trying to put one over on us."
I recall Desmond ShaweTaylor suggesting (ironically) there should be a competition to choose the 100 best LPs by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau! I don't suppose many will agree with your selection - not even the top handful. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert should be in the top 5 with a tie for 5th place between Haydn, Handel and Brahms.
I like your list, I am glad to see that Khachaturian, Rodrigo, Schoenberg, Janacek and Scriabin are getting some love, I find them so underrated. I am glad to see Debussy is on the top ten, with Bach and Wagner behind them, he is perhaps my favourite composer of them all. Jean Baptiste Lully, Zoltan Kodaly and Alban Berg are one of my favourites too.
Handel #46? Bach #10? Very poorly placed. Bach was ,along with Mozart, the most influential composer in history. And every major composer of the 18th and 19th century pointed to Handel as a major influence on music. Beethoven himself called him "The Master of us all".
Same... growing up watching old cartoons and first getting into classical music, I heard a lot of Johann Strauss and was led to believe people considered him one of the greatest composers (and he became one of my favorites). But apparently among "serious" classical musicians, he doesn't get much love
My personaly top ten is 1.Shostakovich 2.Ravel 3.Liszt 4.Bach 5.Rachmaninov 6.Borodin 7.Stravinskij 8.Sibelius 9.Bartok 10.Martinů (11.Arkady Severny XD)

I liked your list, although I agree much with Sam Bol, and I would add on the "questionable list": Horner, Jenkins, Shore. Before picking those I would add from the following: Reger, Martinu, Delius, Pfitzner, Suk, Gounod, Lutoslawski, Adam, Grofé, Chausson, Duruflé, Ibert, Schreker, Zemlinsky, Enescu (the only well known Romanian composer!!) or from ancient time: Schütz, Scarlatti, Pergolesi, Praetorius but then: PLEASE DON'T TELL RICHARD STRAUSS WAS AUSTRIAN, HE WAS GERMAN (MOSTLY BAVARIAN)!!! Every musician should know, that he had nothing to do with the viennese Strauss-Dynasty who wrote all the famous waltzes.
Excellent listing... thank you. "All art is a gift of the Holy Spirit. When this light shines through the mind of a musician, it manifests itself in beautiful harmonies." ~ Baha'i Faith
I feel like you did some of the more radical composers injustice by playing the most traditional-sounding parts from some of their more musically conservative/early pieces (Schoenberg, Scriabin, Prokofiev, and I guess Shostakovich)
This is the list of Mr. Givyarto's favorite composers. We can agree or disagree but we have to respect his opinion. Great job Mr. Giyvarto. Where are you from? Greetings from Nelson Gama, Brazil.
Why John Williams is considered to outrank Gustav Holst remains a mystery and where is Frederick Delius? Where were Steve Reich and John Adams? Holst's Planets Suite is probably the best known work in the classical repertoire.
In EVERY top 100 composers i know, there are Beethoven, Bach and Mozart in the first three positions, Debussy and Rachmaninoff didn't have to stay in the top ten and you've underrated many composers as Haendel, Kabalevsky, Vivaldi and Verdi.
BACH: He is the one with the most notes, he is also very mathematical in his music and incredible. BEETHOVEN: It has the most terrifying and mysterious music, of course, great. TCHAIKOVSKY: In my opinion, when it comes to beauty, tchaikovsky is unrivaled, the number of works and the variety are more beautiful than others, he is my favorite ...

Captain Ricky Chopin has long been my favorite, but it’s hard to admit that he’s “the best.” He hardly wrote for any other instrument than the piano (and if he did they weren’t very successful nor compositionally skilled). I think he is definitely in the top three for piano composers, but probably near the bottom of the top ten composers.

LucasVlogswith FriendsandMore! Yes... it's unbelievable
Listening to these great composers’ masterpieces ,
the troublesome affairs of the mundane world is washed away
I was waiting for Penderecki, but when I got to top 10 I was like "wait a sec..." and then when there were only 2 left, and I haven't seen either Beethoven or Mozart, I was like "wtf man, this is bs"
Penderecki deserves being in the list more than most of the film composers.
Yeah, it was schocking Penderecki wasn't there, and that Back was 10th.
@@GaborNMPCompletely agree...and Lutoslawski should also have made it before most of those film composers were mentioned too
Top 20 Composers
1. Bach
2. Mozart - Beethoven (depends on how you feel about opera)
4. Bartok
5. Brahms
6. Ravel
7. Stravinsky
8. Chopin
9. Haydn
10. Schoenberg - Debussy (depends on how you feel about serialism)
12. Schubert
13. Puccini // Verdi (It really comes down to libretto taste)
14. Ligeti
15. Wagner
16. Rachmaninoff
17. Tchaikovsky
18. Palestrina
19. Mahler
20. Gershwin
Before you ask: no, Liszt and Paganini should not be on the top 20.
Why no liszt
And you are missing Händel for sure...
1-bach
2-beethoven
3-mozart
4-wagner
5-stravinsky
They arguably are the greatest because of how much they changed/perfectionated music in their times.
Nah, Mozart and Beethoven are bigger and better, it’s as simple as that.
@@mrmxyzptlk8906 Beethoven and Mozart would've disagreed!
@@Bwv1046 no… they would’ve agreed, as do most.

Beethoven once called him the "immortal god of harmony"

1. Chopin
2. Beethoven
3. Liszt
4. Mozart
5. Schubert
6. Bach
7. Tchaikovsky
8. Rachmaninoff
9. Vivaldi
10. Debussy

You spelt shostakovich wrong

5:58 Number 65, John Cage
I tend to agree with Anna Russell's assessment of contemporary music: "The more off-key you become, the more contemporary it sounds. Nine out of ten don't understand it, and that tenth, you're never quite sure if they understand it, or if they just stand it because they think they're supposed to understand it. Only time will tell if the composer has achieved artistry far beyond mortal understanding, of if he's just trying to put one over on us."
Mozart on First place! Absolutly my opinion!!
Im so glad Busoni is AT LEAST 100
Busoni is a little bit too low
Same as Kablevsky he's in my top 15 faivorite composers.
You know something's fishy when you see Rameau, Telemann and Purcell at the bottom 5 slots.

Rameau 10.
I wouldn't put these composers that low. But he put them too high
even sarasate so low WTF
I recall Desmond ShaweTaylor suggesting (ironically) there should be a competition to choose the 100 best LPs by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau!
I don't suppose many will agree with your selection - not even the top handful. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert should be in the top 5 with a tie for 5th place between Haydn, Handel and Brahms.
Fun! Any such list is wildly subjective, and that’s what makes it such an interesting exercise.
You forgot
Bellini and Gounod
I like your list, I am glad to see that Khachaturian, Rodrigo, Schoenberg, Janacek and Scriabin are getting some love, I find them so underrated. I am glad to see Debussy is on the top ten, with Bach and Wagner behind them, he is perhaps my favourite composer of them all. Jean Baptiste Lully, Zoltan Kodaly and Alban Berg are one of my favourites too.
Quicksilverfan69 Yeah, it was nice to see early 1900’s contemporary on here. The only thing missing was Sorabji and Xenakis.
And Kabalevsky, I would Put Him Higher tho, Maybe in the top 15

Of course you're entitled to your own opinion, but in what world is Saint-Saens better than Bach?
Nobody who has any idea of music would put Bach below No. 1.
Handel #46? Bach #10? Very poorly placed. Bach was ,along with Mozart, the most influential composer in history. And every major composer of the 18th and 19th century pointed to Handel as a major influence on music. Beethoven himself called him "The Master of us all".
Handel is the best I can't Handel any one else as number one
