It certainly makes me feel less guilty about eating their honey. So their honey benefits us and them alike because they make too much for themselves.

The smoke is not used as a "warning" of someone about to enter the hive. Bees communicate via chemicals called "pheromones." The smoke does two things. First, it dilutes the warning pheromone (which smells like bananas) to short circuit the chemical communications. Second, it triggers a reaction in the bees to start collecting honey to take to the next hive since they think the current hive is on fire. This causes the bees to focus on collecting honey and not an invader.

One of the most misconception about bees is they like to sting a lot. Actually, bees don't like to sting human. You can even hold a scoop of bees inside your hand without the smokes if you careful and skilled enough. That said, with smoke added, their awareness is lowered enough for you to take out their comb without a single sting encased anywhere on your body.

fun fact: honey can taste differently depending on the local plants the bees have access to
thats right honey from one local honey farm shop could taste different than honey from a different honey farm shop... it always fascinates me how the honey tastes differently depending on the plant the bees use
my dad brought home a jar of honey made from lime trees that tastes minty (it's apparently good on toast, tried it and it was indeed good)... I also tried one that had a toffee taste which I liked, there is also the Orange blossom that has a citrusy taste to it... it's like you get to taste what the local really has to offer! ^^
I've heard some places mix the honey... it kind of ruins that charm tbf (there's also jackasses that sell fake honey which is corn syrup or some other shit that probably isnt as cool, tasty and healthy as the real deal... best bet is to get it from a local bee farm if you're not sure if the honey at the store is real or fake, they also say local bee farm honey is tastier anyway!)

What they failed to mention is the decafer is essentially a hot knife. It's kind of shaped like a short sword there's vibrated back and forth which the one my family used was manual and you run hot water through it it's actually hollow and you run hot water in one side with the cold water coming out the other because beeswax has such a low melting point the vibration of the blade and the hot water combined scrapes the wax off without damaging the honey underneath now some honey will come with it and lot of times they'll be a collection bason and the wax falls into or a tub and that will usually have a spigot on the lower end because it will sit on an angle that will collect all the honey that was scraped off with the wax that can be recovered later and then bottled

I actually like that we don’t take the honey the bees eat but rather the honey that would go to waste since they produce wayyy to much of it.
Like my grandparents used to raise bees, but since they didn’t really eat honey that much they always ended with a lot of extra honey. They either had to throw away excess that stayed because the hives were getting overfilled or get more glass barrels to store the honey

That’s the key to not being stung. Gentle, non-aggressive moves and you’ll be ok. A few exceptions: killer bees don’t like to be bothered - period. In fact some bee keepers will destroy hives of killer bees. Other exception: bee hives have personalities. Most are calm and dosel, a few will be defensive but not as bad as killer bees.

The smoke is not a warning, it does two jobs. It stops the bees being able to communicate with each other with warning pheromones because the smoke masks the scent. The other job is that the bees smelling smoke will gorge themselves on as much honey as possible in preparation for fleeing the burning hive. This makes the lethargic and docile, which makes handling them easier.

  • @joshfish2

In 1770, Thomas Wildman introduced a new kind of hive that would allow beekeepers to harvest honey without killing the bees. This type of hive isn’t far from the ones we see and use today; it consists of a skep with an open top and a woven lid that can easily be removed. Seven frames are hung from the top, rather than letting the bees build their own structure inside. Wildman also suggested stacking multiple skeps on top of each other so that bees could move to new ones. This would leave others free and allow beekeepers to easily collect honey without harming any bees. In 1851, Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth developed a new type of beehive that is pretty much unchanged today. Building upon Wildman’s idea of stacked skeps and hanging frames, Langstroth replaced the woven skeps with sturdy wooden boxes. He also made the frames inside removable; this meant that, instead of filling the spaces between hanging frames with comb and propolis (what bees use to construct and insulate their hives), the bees would instead leave this space open. Now that beekeepers could remove each frame one at a time, they had more control over their hives and the bees were more happy too. Individual frames could be removed without ripping the comb apart and causing distress to the bees. This made things a whole lot easier for both the beekeepers and the bees; suddenly, beekeepers could monitor their hives with ease and as often as they wanted, allowing them to easily keep on top of disease and track the queen’s progress. www.mrwasp.co.uk/the-history-of-beekeeping-and-bee-control
