For those who don't know about the story behind Bach's Brandenburg concertos. In 1721, Bach composed six “concertos for various instruments”. He dedicated them to a Prussian nobleman and sent the manuscript as a gift, hoping to land a job as the court composer in Brandenburg. The nobleman never replied. Bach eventually took another job in Leipzig, where he lived for the rest of his life. The 6 concertos were lost for 130 years. They were never performed. The manuscript was eventually sold for about $20 and shelved in a library. The Brandenburg Concertos sat there until 1849, when they were discovered and published for the first time. Thank god.

These majestic arrangements make me grateful for the day that was; a letter sent, some work done, a brisk walk up a mountain, a warm fire burning, time spent with my nieces researching why cats purr, a hot shower, a home cooked meal. Funny, I wasn't unhappy when I listened to this music, but now my spirit is dancing madly about my bedroom with joy. Thank you, Bach! Thank you world. Thank you, too. We're doing ok. Things are getting better. 'Being human is not easy, so let's be kind'. Let's be happy, let's listen, let's remember all the beautiful people in our lives whom we know and love: they'll all be gone one day, you and me, too. But, you know, it was worth it. Life you beautiful absurd melody; a timeless work of art, composed and lived - right from the heart. 🎶🙏💖😁

Notes on the room photographed - It is the Concert Room from Sanssouci Palace, and J.S.Bach's son played that piano.
This concert room contributed to the fame of Sanssouci Palace. The house concerts of the king, who had been a passionate flute player since his youth and composed 120 flute sonatas, took place here. He was accompanied by his music teacher Johann Joachim Quantz and by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The fortepiano, modern at the time, on which the son of the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach played, still stands in the concert room; next to it is one of Frederick's instruments. The musical king devoted one to two hours a day to playing the flute.

remarkably, we have twice as much of bach's music today as in the decades after his death. wilhelm got most of the clavier music, and sold it off piecemeal to pay his liquor bills. bwv worked tirelessly to collect and publish the cantata parts and texts. only emanuel was a ccareful custodian of his share. of course, he landed a well paying job at the berlin court, so he had the most resources. it has taken two hundred years to recover nearly all of bach's music, including these six treasures.

Ever since I was a child I have loved the Brandenburg Concertos. I sometimes play a game where I wonder what type of music will I hear in heaven. I think of many pieces of music from Bach to Lauridsen. There are times when I listen to the Brandenburgs and close my eyes, I start crying because it almosts feels as if I am there. What exquisite beauty these concertos are.

You echo my feelings exactly. My late Mum(bless her heart) was a violinist and I used to sit in awe as a child when listening to the orchestra that she played in. I loved the smell of the resin they used to treat their bows, the sound of the turning of the pages of sheet music and of course how amazing that one man could hear all the instruments in his head to create such music. Today, when I sit quietly and listen to this music, I can smell the resin and hear the turning of pages and the focused faces of the orchestra and I get very emotional. My prayer is that my mum is up there playing in God's orchestra.

I wish them kindness, dignity and ease in their endeavors, both personal and public, may they receive the distinction and appreciation they deserve not only from their children, after all, they are more than just our parents, they have souls and interests and the cerebral nature and taste for existence, just like us! Oh angel of sensibility and beauty accompany them in the sunrays and the shade alike, and may soft grass and quiet horizons ever find their palates, for fostering life they accrue the Blessing of the Goddess for all time! Verily, may they know Heaven in this life and on this Earth, for it is all around us all the time!
