I've been struggling up here, child, trying to make a living Everybody wants to take, nobody like giving I wish I was in Memphis back home there with my Mama The only clothes I got left that ain't rags is my pajamas No brotherly love, no help, no danger Just a great big town full of cold hearted strangers I went hungry in New York and Chicago was no better But today, my dear mother wrote and told me in her letter Son, come back to Memphis and live here with your Mama You can walk down Beale Street, honey, wearing your pajamas You know home folks here, we let do just what you want to And I born you and raised you right here on the corner I'm going to leave here in the morning and walk down to the station I've got just enough money to pay my transportation I'm going back to Memphis, back home with my Mama If I have to ride that bus barefooted in pajamas Back home in Memphis, no moaning and groaning I know everything will be all right in the morning
The only band (no pun intended) that sound better live than on their recordings. This is pretty damn good but in my humble opinion the best version I have heard is the version played at their Vancouver reunion in ‘83 with Levon on the harmonica. Rock ‘n roll at its very very best. Absolutely amazing.
This is NOT a live recording. The audience was added to the track. There’s no known recording of the Band at Watkins Glen NY. The tracks were pulled from studio outtakes.
LEVON WAS THE KING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE ONLY AMERICAN IN THE BAND.................................... MR MOONSHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, Turkey Scratch (near Marvell, which is near Helena) is flatter than a fritter, but he did spend some formative years in Fayetteville up on the Ozark plateau.
the best band there ever was and ever will be
Right On, the one and only Band!
At the end of the memeber introduction, Bill Graham said, "Key man and drums, Levon Helm", I quite agree with him.
There is NO THE BAND without Levon!
How I love this performance! Love Levon's drumming, Robbie's guitars and especially Garth's organ work.
Don't forget the Dank-man!
AT THIS STAGE THEY HATED EACH OTHER BUT NEEDED WORK.
Good old rock and roll. Interplay between Robbie and Levon is great,
Dig it totally! ❄️🌎❄️👁️💓🎵🎸🔥🎸🥂
long live Rock and Roll, Chuck Berry and The Band. Levon's drumming and phrasing is flawless. multi-tasking !
t

Mt. Chuck Berry is truly the Godfather of Rock 'n' Roll !
I agree!!! Where does Robert Johnson fit in.
@@paulmorgan2948 Maybe Robert Johnson was rock n roll's Granddad ...
Great raw material from Chuck Berry, a genius. Performed by THE BAND (all of them), in their prime.
Jeez Levon, that is some sweet playin..
I just this recording! The Band Forever!!!!!
Sound great, real tight! Live performance from Watkins Glen '73? When they were good they were very, very good...
the best nobody even close
You've got to love their rough and rugged 'Johnny Reb' image -very stylish ! !
CANADIANS DESTABILIZING AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not the only band that did. The Grateful Dead's shows were better than their studio albums.
@@cabellmercer can’t comment there I’m afraid. I never saw them play.
Love the Cowbell... and everything else!
RIP Levon...
CONSUMER WARNING: This is an outtake studio version with crowd noise and intro dubbed in, wasn't from Watkins Glen.

Lots of bootlegs…this is probably from the fake Live At Watkins Glen LP now out of print
@percommode actually an outtake from "Moondog Matinee" and was scapped in place of "Promised Land" another chuck berry tune..
Another one from Chuck!
Love you levon I swear I Will argue black is white if my beautiful wife has a son and don't let me call him levon God bless you
he has
hell yeah
@percommode No problems brother. Peace
This is my kinda music! Levon's voice is so soulful and the lyrics so bluesy. The band so loose and comfortable in the beat.

This intro!
Just wondering how Garth is holding out these days.
"Bill? Bill? Bill?" :)
Only clean clothes I got is my pajamas.
just look at this photo who were these guys?
They are gods . That's who they are
Those guys are just the greatest band in the history of music, as Rob ie said sounds like a band to me
First band to be on tge cover of rolling stone magazine haa.
Not one or two but all of them could sing to some degree. How many other bands can do that?
Come out from under that rock!
Levon Helms was bon in ark>>ozarks mts :)
