  • Why is Candace so hellbent on busting Phineas and Ferb? What's the reason for her disturbing and undying obsession?
    Candace is one of the most memorable and well-developed characters in the show but, undeniably, the most controversial too. Her antagonistic nature brought many to think she's just a selfish and obnoxious teenage girl in desperate need of a life, but if you look a little deeper into it, you might find her quite relatable and realize her behavior is more than justified.
    Why? Because, whether you like it or not, Candace has always been in the right.
    So in this Video Essay I'd like to analyze Candace's character and work out why she believes Phineas and Ferb deserve to get busted, essentially rethinking the whole show in a brand new light: from Candace’s point of view.
    Let's see if I can change your mind about her.

      Best examples and evidence in my opinion:
      “Pizza Delivery" - Squidward rescues SpongeBob from being run over by a truck. Later in the episode, Squidward stands up for SpongeBob after his feelings are hurt by an angry customer. Squidward slams the pizza in the customer's face and cheers up SpongeBob by telling him that the customer "ate the whole thing in one bite."
      "Nature Pants" - Although he seemed happy about SpongeBob leaving at first, Squidward later attends a party at SpongeBob's house welcoming him back home and he gave him back his pants, even tolerating a hug from the sponge and later everyone else in the house (albeit barely).
      "SB-129" - After being in the past and the future, Squidward admits he misses SpongeBob and wants to go home. When he gets home, he sees SpongeBob and Patrick and admits that he is happy to see them. Though he quickly becomes annoyed by the fact that he invented jellyfishing.
      "Fools in April" - After playing a nasty trick, SpongeBob becomes upset and runs home crying. Squidward then feels guilty and tries apologizing numerous times, until he finally comes clean and gives a full apology.
      "Squid's Day Off" - When Squidward is put in charge of the Krusty Krab, he leaves SpongeBob unattended and goes home to get a day of relaxation. However, Squidward kept worrying about SpongeBob and kept going back to The Krusty Krab to check on him.
      "Bossy Boots" - After Pearl gets a job at the Krusty Krab, Squidward and SpongeBob agree to team up to protect their jobs.
      "Dying for Pie" - After SpongeBob supposedly eats a bomb, Squidward feels guilty and tries to give SpongeBob the best day ever by doing ridiculous things on SpongeBob's list before he explodes. Later, Squidward nervously counts down to one and when he hears an explosion, he starts to sob over SpongeBob. But it turns out SpongeBob blew an explosive bubble, much to Squidward's chagrin.
      "Squidville" - Squidward moves to Tentacle Acres to get away from SpongeBob. After weeks of living there, he gets tired of the monotonous day to day routine and even misses SpongeBob. After hearing a noise of a reef blower, he thinks it's SpongeBob and gets happy, but finds out it's a reef blower. He then uses the reef blower to escape happily back home.
      "Christmas Who?" - Because Santa Claus didn't come to Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob becomes very upset and Squidward cruelly makes fun of him. Though SpongeBob gives Squidward a new customized clarinet as a present, Squidward feels bad for what he did and realizes that his grouchy attitude had ruined Christmas for everyone. To atone for his nasty behavior, he dresses up as Santa and gives away all of his things to other people to make SpongeBob happy and restore Bikini Bottom's Christmas spirit.
      "Pressure" - Squidward teams up with SpongeBob, along with Mr. Krabs and Patrick to compete with Sandy to prove that sea creatures are better.
      "Band Geeks" - Squidward was dancing to SpongeBob's song.
      "Graveyard Shift" - When the hash-slinging slasher is about to get them, Squidward admits that he always sort of liked SpongeBob, but SpongeBob spoils it by admitting that he used Squidward's clarinet to unclog his toilet.
      "Squid on Strike" - Squidward tells SpongeBob not to pay Mr. Krabs any money for the ridiculous things he charged them for, and Squidward demands Krabs to give them respect and higher pay. Squidward convinces SpongeBob to go on a strike with him for Mr. Krabs' treatment of them.
      "Idiot Box" - When Squidward kicks the box, he starts an avalanche. Squidward becomes worried about SpongeBob and Patrick and checks inside the box to see if they are alright.
      "Can You Spare a Dime?" - Squidward acts nice to SpongeBob for letting him stay in his home. However, he later takes advantage of SpongeBob's kindness and becomes a pest for him, to the point of blatantly ignoring SpongeBob’s not-so-subtle hints about wanting Squidward to get a job.
      "Squilliam Returns" - Squidward tells SpongeBob he can't thank him enough for all he's doing while making Squilliam believe he owns the Krusty Krab as a five-star restaurant.
      "Krab Borg" - Squidward teams up with SpongeBob and helps him take down Mr. Krabs, whom they think is a robot.
      "Clams" - After Mr. Krabs lost his first one-millionth dollar at the hands of a giant clam, and becoming insane afterward, forcing both Squidward and SpongeBob to find and capture the giant clam for the rest of the millennia until they manage to get the dollar back from that clam. Squidward had to convince SpongeBob to secretly escape from the now insane Mr. Krabs to the escape boat, but fails, as Mr. Krabs already inside the boat and began to use the tied Squidward and SpongeBob as the life-baits.
      "Born Again Krabs" - Squidward angrily scolds Mr. Krabs when he trades SpongeBob for sixty-two cents. He says that he should be ashamed before Mr. Krabs claims he wants SpongeBob back.
      "The Camping Episode" - After being warned multiple times about sea bears by SpongeBob and Patrick and attacked multiple times by one, Squidward finally believes and joins them in their anti-sea-bear circle, which serves as a defense against attack. Squidward expresses gratitude to SpongeBob and Patrick for saving his life.
      "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler" - Squidward warns SpongeBob about the Tattletale Strangler after turning him in. Later, he is happy to party with SpongeBob and the other citizens.
      The first Movie - At the end of the film, Mr. Krabs gives SpongeBob the manager job, saying he deserves it, with Squidward agreeing. Squidward gave SpongeBob the manager tag and Squidward and everyone else cheer for SpongeBob. Squidward also spoke up for SpongeBob when he was nervous.

    The real tragedy of Candace Flynn isn't the failure to bust her brothers, it's that all her miseries can be traced back to one person. Herself. Yes Phineas and Ferb are lucky to the point of parody, yes getting treated to what feels to her like a double standard is frustrating, yes not being taken seriously is an issue, but think about it. Candace's one defining flaw is her inability to let things come naturally and embrace the chaos. The idea of something not being perfect is one she cannot let happen, and when that inevitably happens, she freaks out. Her desire for absolute order in her own way is her own undoing. Busting Phineas and Ferb isn't the catalyst for breaking her cycle of torment. Rather busting Phineas and Ferb IS the cycle. Compounding this is the fact Phineas and Ferb are two most pure souls who probably cannot comprehend Candace's own feelings. They cannot understand that they are unintentionally punching their sister in the gut every time they do something great.

      You summed up why I always felt a good bit of sympathy her in the show. I myself like having things orderly and by the book at work (to excess at times I admit) and it drives me nuts when things are chaotic and unfair, or they seem to be at least. I think she is a wonderful way for someone like myself to see what our tendencies can turn us into if unchecked.

      And to find out Doofenschmirtz was the cause for most of her brothers' inventions to disappear, she'd most likely take him outta the equation by trying to kill him, something that would get her three weeks in Arkham Asylum, I think it'd be about time to try something a little different for the show's 5th season, instead of her saying "mom, Phineas and Ferb are making a title sequence" at the end of every title sequence, she'd be all "what's the use" and say "oh forget it, just finish your title sequence and get it over with"

    To me, Candace is summed up pretty well by this line: "Why is it that when Phineas and Ferb have an idea everyone's like 'oh wow you guys are really clever.' and when I come up with something, everyone goes: 'What? Did you say something Candace?'"
    Candace suffers because she is hardly ever built up (and sometimes is torn down as well), while Phineas and Ferb get constant praise. It's favoritism. Candace seeks others' approval because she doesn't have a healthy environment. I remember when she's with just Jeremy, she does a lot better because he invests in her. He is a safe space for her and Jeremy is so kind and reassuring with her, even when she gets obsessive with her brothers, he doesn't freak out.
    I think the boys' lacking social awareness, really on display in Candace against the universe, makes things unintentionally worse. However, the Boys do have their moments where they build Candace up and she does better.
    Yes Candace chooses to bust her brothers and does this to herself, but she isn't in a place where she can move forward, ask to be included in their success, or to benefit from their success (beyond the I'm fused to Jeremey or my personalities got split kind of stuff very often)She needs help, whether it's from her brothers, her parents, friends, or a therapist, she needs a strong support system to lift her up and fill her need to feel valued and wanted.

      I totally agree, especially with what you said about Jeremy. I’ve always found his love for Candace to be so pure, he obviously likes her for who she is, accepts all of her flaws no matter how weird they are and always knows what to say to cheer her up, he helps her get through her issues every single time. He’s a saint and the type of person Candace desperately needs.
      And I do like when you said Candace isn’t in a place where she can move forward, as many keep wondering why she doesn’t just forget about her brothers and go on with her life. It’s really not that easy, and it’s even harder if she’s on her own with no help from those around her

      Yeah, I guess the biggest reason why Candace is so frustrated with herself is because of the way her mother treats her. Like sometimes it seems like Linda really despises Candace, she constantly mocks her, thinks she insane or straight up ignores her while showering Phineas and Ferb with attention/appreciation. So Candace is just frustrated because she feels overshadowed by her brothers great achievements. Like you said, Jeremy on the other hand is a place where she gets love/acceptance without living up to unrealistic standards. And I guess she does care for her brothers as well. I mean most of Phineas and Ferbs Instructions could end up quite dangerous if they would make a mistake, like with the rollercoaster.

    It's kinda ironic how despite her never living up to her younger brother, she is like the most interesting character in the show and she actually feels like the real main character in P&F. While Candace has her up and down, flaws and greatness, P&F just feels like the most generic good guys ever, perfect in every way, kind hearted, etc. Candace is probably one of the main reasons that P&F is such a good show other than Perry and Doffensmirzt, she would always have atleast a third of the screen time in most episodes, and prob the most relatable character. Milo Murphys law has almost the same formula like P&F but it lacks a Candace - a truely well written character who actually has "character" , therefore failing to make the show interesting enough for the audience to come back.

    • @Jegcopo
      @Jegcopo  Рік тому +25

      Phineas and Ferb work as great character foils for Candace: they help her define her personality, but the boys themselves are not that interesting as characters, I do agree with you (just like how I agree with what you said about MML, that show never really cought my attention honestly, maybe because there's not a Candace-like character in it, who knows).
      Candace, just like Doof, is a much more developed and well-rounded character, and I've always found her a thousand times more relatable than her brothers, as she really feels like an actual person, as you said, with both flaws and great personality traits.
      I mean, the creators of the show wanted both Phineas and Ferb to be extremely nice, polite, kind and supportive kids from the get go (except for the little anomaly of the pilot), which is great, but this means there's almost no drama or action on their part, so it's clear the writers never intended those two to get the spotlight too often.
      In fact, I believe Ferb got about the same amount of character development as Stacy did, at the end of the day. So we could say the boys are quite relevant supporting secondary characters in Candace's story, but not the main ones, despite being the titular characters of the show itself

    For a long while, I have had a much darker theory about why Candace needs to bust her brothers and why, specifically SHE has to do it (if it was just getting them busted, she could simply ask nearly anyone else (Stacy, Jeremy, nearly every person in the Tri-State area) to corroborate her stories, Mom can't believe EVERYONE in the area was making up the same story.)
    I think that way back when, Mr. Flynn (Candace and Phineas's birth Father) had some terrible secret that he kept from the family (like, say, a drug habit). Little Candace did find out, but Mr. Flynn told her that, if she told her mom it would destroy their family, so she kept her mouth shut. Then, whatever Mr. Flynn was doing actually KILLED him. Now, Candace is suffering from severe trauma. Even though she can see her brothers are both brilliant and competent in what they are doing, and even though it is to her advantage to let them keep going (remember all of the times they have used their skills to help HER.) she feels she HAS to let mom know and make her believe, lest they also do something dangerous and she loses her brothers as well. And it has to be HER who busts them, to atone for keeping her mouth shut the first time.

    I would say you nailed it in that the busting obsession developed over time. Let's be honest here the rollercoaster was dangerous and had they not built it right the town would be covered in them and their friends, to name only the first episode.
    Something I liked is that as things went on Stacy got less involved because she just got tired of the busting taking priority over a trip shopping or to the spa or a movie or anything they had planned. Add to that the way her mom gets annoyed with it over time and it shows what being so single minded can do to the rest of your life.

      Stacy's point of view here is very interesting: she often put Candace's needs in front of her own and she always gave her all the help she could, but wasn't always reciprocated.

    Even as a kid, I’ve always wanted Candice to finally get the attention she deserves because she tries so hard to be seen even by her own mom, and instead of being seen as something positive, she’s viewed as crazy, delusional and immature, even by her own mother. Heck, with a little brother who outshines me in school, and a mother who always tells me the virtues of her high school life, it gets overwhelming when you have so much to live up to and yet can only do a certain amount before you start to crack. It’s a cycle that ends up with Candice giving up on trying to convince her mom and falling into a sort of depressed state where she feels like the universe is against her. And even when she has control over when she should stop, she doesn’t stop because it’s a habit, even when she knows it ruins her life. Dang, I related too much to a fictional character.

    I am curious about how it was before Candace started busting them. Did she participate in the inventions? Did the invention also disappear before her parents could see it? The reason why they are disappearing is because of Doofenshmirtz’s inventions, and how Perry tries to stop Doof, so did the inventions only start disappearing when Perry was adopted? When Perry was adopted Candace still seemed like she felt the same way as she does during the show. Maybe when the boys were younger they made things that weren’t “bustable” enough so they didn’t get in trouble; instead they got praise from Linda (and Lawrence I guess), which made Candace feel maybe jealous and less important by comparison. It makes sense why she has such an attachment to Ducky Momo; the show was an escape for her, something that made her feel accepted. If both theories co-exist that in a sense Candace does get revenge on her mom. That little choker Linda has on Candace disappeared the moment Candace stopped wanting to bust Phineas and Ferb. Candace just goes along with their shenanigans and has fun. Yes Linda does have a come back, but it is partially hollow when she realizes she isn’t getting Candace’s goat anymore.
    Also it does show Candace breaks the cycle. Her mom basically tormented her for whatever reasons you said in the theory videos. Candace takes her kids actions in strides and just enjoys the moment.
    If you were being serious about video essay ideas (again partially hoping this isn’t on the list) can you discuss the dynamic between Doofenshmirtz and Charlene . It’s interesting to see a divorce on good terms especially in animation and I’m 50/50 on Charlene knowing Life has rolled Doofenshmirtz time and time again yet he’s still a good guy, or she knows he’s not a guy to be screwed with since he once turned a building into a giant robot.

    You can see that we are thrown right in the middle of this whole debacle at the beginning of the show. Everyone's defining character traits are well known in the canon of the show, including Candace's obsession and constant failure.
    Imagine if you tried to protect your little brothers from their comically absurd shenanigans nearly every day, but you fail every time due to either frustrating obliviousness or freak coincidences. The universe literally doesn't want you to do this. "wait so you approve of them doing this?" Candace asks. "of course i approve! they're having fun, no one ever gets hurt. you should join them!" and from that point on, Candace is no longer a pseudo-antagonist but instead helps her brothers build the contraption. or at least: stays out of their way, and maybe shows it off to her friends when they finish building it.

    • @Jegcopo
      @Jegcopo  Рік тому +4

      They're definitely impressive but people usually underestimate what a protective (or even overprotective) parent can get mad at xD
      She sure wouldn't have had problems with the more normal stuff, like the aglet thing, the fashion craze, or even the circus, or the perry (in)action figure, but I believe Linda would have cared more for the safety of her children rather than how amazing their inventions were: she would have been mad if they built contraptions that were actually dangerous themselves or for stuff the boys simply could have gotten hurt building.
      Even if they had permits and stuff, quite a lot of their inventions (not all of them of course) were definitely things Linda wouldn't have wanted them to build and ride, for starters, all those vehicles and rides:
      From giant treehouse robots, to submarines, the all-terrain machine, the giant paper pelican plane, but also the flying carpet, the chariots, the modified kiddie rides, the monster truck, the biplane, the giant bowling ball, the UFO and, of course, the rollercoaster.
      Then I believe she wouldn't have been happy to see them travel through time, to other dimensions and outer space either, same for the cattle thing, building the tallest building on Earth, the football X7 stadium, the roller rink, carving Candace's face onto Mount Rushmore and so on. Not to mention all those sci-fi inventions, like the molecular splitter, the machine for turning people into flies, the portal to Mars, the teleportation portals and such.
      So I'd say that, legally speaking, 80-90% of their inventions are fine (no one would have EVER allowed them to do the Mount Rushmore thing, for example xD), while if you consider what Linda would have forbidden them to do, then I guess about 30% of the inventions would have been fine, but likely not the rest. Even something like a technically harmless molecular separator or the sphere for passing through matter could be dangerous if not used extremely carefully, while to an overprotective parent even just riding a bike with no helmet is outrageous xD
      But if course this is just what I think, considering Linda's reactions upon finding out about their doings, but it's definitely not the absolute truth

    I allways could relate so much to Candace, being the eldest sister of two twin younger siblings is a surprisingly hard job. If it ends like that and youre the only 3 siblings the typical sibling roles are very different from the usual youngest middle and oldest. The oldest one gets both the old and middle treatment where theyre expected to be responsible and then ignored, you will allways be "busted" for any small wrong doing and expected to be able to take care of yourself and your siblings because having 2 kids is more work so you get left behind. Not only does the parents/parent have to focus more on the 2 but they also have eachother, you dont just compete for parental love you will allways come last in life, my two twin siblings are a boy and a girl so youd think maybe being sisters would bring us closer or being tougher would bring me closer to my brother but i knew since i was able to think for myself that I will allways be the second choice, my father wanting a boy will allways choose my brother over me despite him hating any hobby my father wants for him because he is more on the artistic side of things like music, my mother will allways preffer my sister because she is 11 minutes younger than her brother so since mom was a youngest she wants to give her "youngest" kid everything she didnt get and hated her older sisters so i tend to get blamed for anything. And being twins is an extremly close thing, anyone with any sense would know you dont get to be as close to them as their twin, its so special.
    As a sibling you loose connection and love when things work so similarly to how this family works. I might have been a kid when i saw this show but it resonated so well with me, i allways wanted to cry for Candace and i could never explain to my family why.

We get away with it by using a starter remote.") And whenever somebody asks about their age, they always answer honestly about it. (I don't even need to quote the line here, you already know it.) and some Cases have been so open that it's a question of "why is this illegal in the first place?" (See "Toy to the World" as an example for this category.) It's not like it's unwarranted to call the obsession "exaggerated" or "unhealthy".

    Still doesn't justify Candace to me. I have siblings too (and I know sibling rivalry) and I'm not trying to get them in trouble for me to look good, but she's neglecting her own friends, growth, and social reputation over this. She even called them evil before. She needs therapy.

    • @Jegcopo
      @Jegcopo  Рік тому +10

      I’m not saying Candace is the best person here, because she probably isn’t, but she was definitely doing the right thing bringing the boys’ inventions to Linda’s attention. Or at least trying to. She was in the right there, considering how mad and worried her mom would have been seeing her sons traveling through time, to outer space or to other dimensions.
      As for her envy and resentment, I think it goes a little deeper than a common sibling rivalry: her envy is not “petty”, but it actually has to do with her being “beaten down by the universe” on a daily basis and life not being too generous with her, which ended up causing Candace to develop an inferiority complex.
      It’s not her fault if she’s insecure, frustrated and exasperated to the point of taking it out on the boys, I think any child would have felt the same way had they grown up in such an environment, with brothers who have it all while you always get the short end of the stick for no apparent reason. And maybe that’s what was harder for her to accept: there was no explanation as to why her brothers’ lives were so perfect, and hers wasn’t, they just were.
      So she might need therapy, I do agree with you on that, but I certainly do not blame it on Candace. It’s hard to remain unfazed when everything keeps going south

    • @yoder6162
      @yoder6162 Рік тому +3

      @@Jegcopo It's petty to me, because at the end of the day, we're responsible for our own happiness and fulfillment, especially since my huge point on why I say it's petty for her is because she's doing it to get the boys in trouble and not for any potential disasters that are possible to happen. It's not from a place of love or concern, but total envy. She's also so hyper focused on what's wrong with her life that she's ignoring the good that's been staring at her all along in her personal life away from her family; her friends, the mutual respect both Phineas and Ferb have for her, and her "love life", she does some unhealthy things concerning Jeremy. If this wasn't a Disney property aimed at kids, we would have seen that aspect chip away too.

    • @Jegcopo
      @Jegcopo  Рік тому +5

      @@yoder6162 True, we are responsible for our happiness, but it's not that easy to just "snap out of it" and be happy, especially when you're in a place of very deep uneasiness and frustration. And I believe it's crucial for Candace's sanity to have a friend, sibling or parent who understands her internal strife.
      Unfortunately due to the events of the show Linda doesn't believe Candace, while the boys are not "emotionally smart" enough yet to fully understand her inner turmoil. Just like how Phineas has trouble realizing Isabella has feelings for him.
      So Candace can only rely on her friends here, and luckily enough Jeremy, Stacy and Vanessa did help, each one in their own way, but only to a certain extent.
      There's no denying Candace loves her brothers, she might have called them evil a few times, but that's to be expected between siblings, she surely doesn't think her brothers are evil people. So she does not want them to suffer or anything, she does love them.
      I think it's worth mentioning her line from "Busted" where she says "I don't want to put the hurt on you, but you better believe me when I tell you that I finally got the dirt on you". This line basically sums up her reasoning.
      And, I agree, the busting doesn't come from a place of concern, it is envy, it's clear, but it's not petty to me. Envy doesn't imply hate towards the envied person after all.
      She's not mad at the boys, she's mad at the world: she has a hard time accepting how her brothers were blessed while she wasn't. How unfair the world has been giving her brothers so much, and nothing to her. While they get away with the most dangerous things ever, which their mom would be livid about, Candace gets punished for not taking out the trash. But she knows it's not her brothers' fault if things are this way, in fact, she often blames herself, unfortunately.
      So I don't think her ultimate goal is getting the boys in trouble, but rather fighting for justice and balancing things out in the universe: she can't help but try to be the hero of her own story by showing her mom the truth, proving she wasn't lying, being on the same level as her bothers and even receiving some appreciation from her parents.
      And if getting in trouble is what Phineas and Ferb get for their creations then so be it, it's only fair. It's not out of spite, it's simply justice.
      The surreal circumstances of the show (aka Doof involuntary interfering) took this situation to the extreme, and not having the support of her family on this (not because they don't love her, but because they're not aware of her feelings), Candace ended up acting crazy quite a few times, behaving inappropriately and antagonistically. But again, there was no hatred involved.
      (Of course this is just what I think, I'm not trying to impose the way I see things on you, I simply wanted to expand on what I said in the video, since I can't always say all I want to say in my videos)

      @@Jegcopo I didn't say "snap out of it" or it was as basic as that, nor am I deliberately discounting Candace's trauma, but the problem is that in later seasons, she starts taking absolute glee into what kind of trouble the boys can get into if they get caught instead of trying to limit their access to prevent any liability to the family. I get what Candace feels and was going through, I am an older child myself, but the way she goes at it makes easy for me to say she doesn't deserve sympathy since some of those problems you pointed out are issues that she created. Again, she loses it completely for me because she's not doing this out of a place of concern for the family, but to be on top.
