- Eemshaven - Bergers van Smit Salvage en Boskalis hebben de ruim 1000 onbeschadigde voertuigen van het door brand beschadigde vrachtschip Fremantle Highway gehaald. Bergers zijn nu bezig met het verwijderen van beschadigde (elektrische) voertuigen. Deze worden aan boord van het schip in containers geladen en op de kade gelost.
Aan boord van het transportschip waren 3784 auto's. Ruim 2700 voertuigen die op de bovenste dekken stonden gingen bij de brand verloren en staan nog steeds op het schip. De auto's op de onderste vier dekken waren na de brand nog redelijk intact en zijn nu allemaal van boord gehaald.
Bergers van Smit Salvage en Boskalis zijn zo'n twee weken geleden begonnen met het van boord halen van auto's van het schip waarop vorige maand brand uitbrak. Het bergingsbedrijf denkt nog ongeveer tien dagen nodig te hebben om ook de uitgebrande auto's op de bovenste dekken te lossen.
De Fremantle Highway vloog in de nacht van 25 op 26 juli op de Noordzee in brand. Het was onderweg van het Duitse Bremerhaven naar Port Said in Egypte en zou daarna doorvaren naar Singapore. Bij de brand kwam één bemanningslid om het leven, de 22 andere raakten gewond.
Als je al die onbeschadigde auto's een logo meegeeft "I survived the Fremantle Highway" krijgen ze opeens nog veel meer waarde :-)
ze worden alleen allemaal vernietigd!

I'm impressed and happy that the Dutch managed to rescue the ship and prevent an environmental disaster.

The EV industrey need too make radical changes to improve the safety of EV's.
Well, the environmental disaster has happened. I don't consider 2700 burned out cars a success.
Also the ship was mainly rescued by the empty deck. Cooling the ship helped of course, but it's all they could do while everything on the upper decks was lost.
The nice thing is that they managed to save the ships diesel fuel and the ICE of the ship seems okay. I wonder what would have happend to a Lithium powered ship.
In my opinion, NMC battery production should be stopped. LFP batteries are much safer and will do in most vehicles. Even safer alternatives without Lithium are on their way.
In the last 5 or 6 years we had 8 car carrier burning, all without electric cars… and guess what? As I know so far, all electric cars on this ship survived… so what was the reason exactly for the fire on this ship?

A Lithium powered ship will not lose 200 tons of marine diesel. The environmental damage to animals will have less impact.

Lijkt me interessant om te weten te komen, of deze autos in de gewone handel gaan, of met speciaal "prijsje" verkocht worden.
Ze gaan allemaal naar de sloop of naar Afrika als ze hier afgekeurd zijn meestal gaan ze dan dan naar armere landen en daar komen dan de rijkere mensen in te rijden.
Geef mij d'r maar eentje hoor. Zo'n mooie BMW als ik mag kiezen.
Worden gesloopt. Fabrikanten willen echt niet de garantie hiervoor dragen, een nieuwe produceren is vele malen goedkoper.
De brandlucht krijg er nooit meer uit, deze worden gesloopt voor onderdelen.
Alle merken hebben een eigen recycle afdeling waar ze alle pre-productie en testauto's slopen. Dat doen ze in eigen beheer om te voorkomen dat er ook maar iets op de markt komt wat niet aan de hoogste kwaliteits eisen voldoet. Dat kan je merk beschadigen. Vandaar dat álle auto's die je hier ziet worden vernietigd en 100% zeker niet ergens op de markt komen.

Zolang de banden en dergelijke niet gesmolten zijn zal het prima zitten met de elektronica. De elektronica kan veel meer hebben dan het rubber van de banden wat betreft temperatuur. Veel van deze auto's zijn ook gewoon rijdend van de boot gereden, niks aan de hand dus. De brand was op dek 8 en de meeste intacte auto's komen van dekken 1-4. Warmte stijgt op dus daar zal het niet zo warm geweest zijn.
Alle chassisnummer aan RDW doorgeven.. want dit gaat problemen opleveren.
Ik zou geen rede zien na inspectie dat deze autos niet alsnog verkocht kunnen worden.
Vooralsnog zijn de berrichten dat er zelfs geen rook geur in de autos is achter gebleven ( onder de brand)

Hmmmm! That half height that came off with a blue covering is interesting. It looks like the blue cover is a standard vinyl tarp (it's shiny) so it's not a fire blanket, it's so nosy people can't see what's inside. Wonder why? Any guesses?

What a great business for local transport company´s. The " good cars" probably has to be crushed or broken for parts minus ev components.
But EV's being what they are, the engines must be relatively uncomplicated, & with many less parts, so don't think they'll be a huge amount salvageable. The batteries are the expensive bit, & they've maybe gone up in a wave of heat & poisonous gas.
The "good cars" are, as far as I can see, non EV Beamers.
I doubt they would destroy them all. I saw a lot of M3 CSs and M3 Tourings, those are like 250 grand each.
I am betting the surviving EV's will be dismantled for parts. The chance of a battery malfunction in the future is to much of a PR risk.
From a safety perspective I would not want the batteries if they paid me to take them, and that's about the most expensive part of these cars.

This would have been much worse if it was not for the empty deck separating them from the fire on the upper decks.
Also, the inside may be a total loss, despite their appearance. The smell is hard to get out, to say the least.

No, what you see are the cars from the lower decks. It was separated from the fire by an empty deck.
There are no statistics yet on the EV's on the upper decks, but there was a photo with at least one burned out Porsche EV.
If it was not for the empty deck, the ship would be at the bottom of the sea right now.
And no matter what started the fire, every expert agrees that none of the existing fire measures on ships will work for Lithium based EV's.

There are five M4 CSL's shown above in white with the black stripes. Wonder if these are getting scrapped or if these will eventually be delivered. Only 1,000 are being built.
I wonder if the intact vehicles will be auctioned off as I suspect they will be. I can't see them being sold 'as new' given the environment they managed to survive during the massive fire that lasted days. Smoke might or might not be an issue, but salt water from the fire fighting efforts might well be.

Tour operators love this stuff. Free entertainment. I used to be a tour-driver in New Zealand and itineraries were usually full of free lookout points etc. Drive slow and economically and before you know it the day is gone. Pile them in a hotel and truck them around some more the next day. This is why I quit. I thought it was dishonest and bad for tourism. That was all before Covid of course when NZ tourism was over-heated and over-rated.

Not yet, investigation is still on-going. But they do know it started on deck 8 and it was almost certain NOT caused by an EV as most of those were on lower decks and survived the fire.

As you are aware that only the facts matter, you should know it makes no sense to venture opinions as to the cause without all the necessary facts before us. Ship fires occur for lots of reasons. I will wait for the investigation to conclude, as anyone ought to. BTW, loading plans for such ships are carefully determined by what cars will be unloaded at the which of the multiple ports they're bound for. They are not loaded according to type. That doesn't mean that there were no EV's mixed with ICE cars on the deck which went up in flames and that it was an EV that started it. What's more, how many of those ICE's would have been hybrids? If a hybrid battery bursts into flames does that make this not relevant because it were not a pure BEV? Manlike Rob-ky(gel)1ob is clearly biased.

How hot were the cars? Electronics get permanent damage at relatively low tempertaures. See the cooling fins allover these components. Reliability will be reduced. Selling is selling customer claimes.
These cars were on different decks than the fire. If the paint isn’t bubbled or discolored, light lenses melted etc. from the heat I seriously doubt any of the electrical systems or anything else on these cars is compromised.

The fire would've created a draft of fresh air from the lower decks, protecting those cars from the heat and smoke. There are videos of them driving the cars off the boat that shows they were not damaged.

They were being electrically "discharged" in a seawater tank to ensure they no longer posed a risk.

Once in thermal run away the chemical reaction produces oxygen and heat until the battery is consumed. Dunk it in water and it will still burn, water does not stop the chemical reaction. Water is only used to reduce collateral damage, same with the blanket. He did see them burn, so you are a Zero Wit.

Met het verplicht elektrisch rijden over slechts enkele jaren in het vooruitzicht, gaan dit soort taferelen op zijn minst wekelijkse kost worden, wereldwijd. Ik blijf benzine stoken zo lang als het wettelijk mag, en ik het financieel nog redden kan.
EVs waren niet de oorzaak. Dit kun je ook lezen in een artikel op autoblog. Die ICE die jij rijdt is daardoor waarschijnlijk wel de oorzaak.
Waarom houd je zo krampachtig vast aan een technologie die aan het uitsterven is? Benzineauto's hebben geen toekomst.

Ik durf niet eens een elektrische auto in een huis met inpandig garage te plaatsen. Mocht de elektrische auto ontbranden is gelijk jouw huis afgefikt. Tja wie is dan aansprakelijk en waar ga je de schade dan verhalen?
Ook in de winter heb je door lagere temperatuur een lagere accu-radius met kilometers. Met de jaren daarna wordt de slijtage aan de accu alleen maar erger. Elektrische auto's wegen zwaar, de overheid wil mogelijk deze auto's gaan belasten. maar de levensduur van een elektrische auto is korter dan die van een verbrandingsmotor variant. Dus wat is nu groener?

EVs did not start this fire, and most EVs on this ship actually survived. It was the gasoline cars that were the problem.

And from leaked pictures, the vast majority of the at least 800 EVs currently believed to be on board are now burnt out shells. Some look like Porsche Taycans and some look like Teslas. Almost all of the perfect cars coming off the ship are internal combustion engined cars. Or what I like to call, proper cars. Go and troll elsewhere, and stop putting everyone at risk from your fire prone EV. Kindy drive it into the middle of the desert (or use autopilot if you need to catch up on your sleep), and then sit in it until the inevitable happens. Shouldn't be very long.

You're the one who is trolling. EVs catch fire way less frequently (about 61 times as less frequent) than your dying gasoline cars. The statistics and facts support this. @@Rob-ky1ob it'd be great if you could provide a reference to your sources, since most trustworthy sources (if you can refer to mass media as trustworthy) claim that the actual cause of the fire is unknown and that most EV's didn't burn purely because they were on a different deck. That doesn't mean that there were no EV's on the deck which went up in flames and that they might have contributed to this despite most burnt cars being ICE.

Ja, dus? Benzineauto's vatten procentueel gezien heel veel vaker vlam dan elektrische auto's. Dus die ene keer dat een elektrische auto vlam vat is dat prima te overzien door deze onder te dompelen. In the US, in percentage terms, BHEVs catch fire more often, then ICE, then BEVs. If you're talking about fires when transporting, a lot of ICE fires appear to be due to not disconnecting the 12V batteries before loading, as well as unchecked gasoline levels in used cars, new cars are limited to 1 US gallon (3,7l). The damaged EVs have to be immersed in a sodium carbonate solution (not water and not seawater). Seawater causes arcing and any EV/lithium-ion battery exposed to seawater can cause a fire (Florida 2022). Regardless of vehicle type, it appears to be damage to the vehicles that is a problem, along with how the vehicles are loaded in close proximity, ineffective onboard fire suppression especially for EV fires, and lack of onboard fire fighting experience. The problems specific to EV fires are they can't be extinguished (easily) and the toxicity of the smoke. Two Australian firefighters were permanently disabled recently after being exposed to an EV fire...and EVs are a waste of money...

Niks geen geheim. Dat zijn beschadigde elektrische auto's welke ondergedompeld worden om de accu te neutraliseren en verdere brand te voorkomen. Dat zijn standaard praktijken welke onze brandweerkorpsen ook toepassen. Maar iets zegt mij dat je dit al wist...
Zo'n beschadigd accupakket kan weer spontaan gaan branden, daarom week oid onder water. De andere containers zijn tegen diefstal en om te voorkomen dat mensen bij de auto's kunnen komen. Beschadigen, onderdelen jatten, op de auto's lopen, illegaal feest etc. daarom moet er 24/7 bewaking bij.
Gewoon omdat het jou niks aangaat.

Gaat ultimo verzekeringspremies zeker niet helpen. Dit kost een paar centen. Lang leve de batterij auto, een concept dat fundamenteel onjuist is. Ons opgedrongen door de politici, groene fascisten en een auto industrie die niet wenst te investeren in echte research. Er waren al batterij auto's rond 1900, vergeet dit nooit!
Je weet niet waar je het over hebt. EVs waren niet de oorzaak van deze brand, en hoe hoog of laag je ook blijft springen, EVs zijn de toekomst en er is geen ontkomen aan. Accepteer dat gewoon. Er zijn heel veel missconcepties over EVs, EVs zijn veel beter voor het milieu dan ICEs of BHEVs dat zijn.
En echte research? Kijk eens hoe de batterij technologie veranderd is sinds 1900. En nu heb je ook batterijen zonder kobalt in auto's. Daarnaast kunnen batterijen voor 99% gerecycled worden, en dit wordt ook al in de praktijk gedaan.
@@Rob-ky1ob mijn punt is dat het idee van een accu fundamenteel fout is. Om vele redenen. Elektrisch is OK, maar zonder accu. En wellicht dat bijvoorbeeld synthetische brandstof, die ook toegepast kan worden in bestaande motoren, ook een goed alternatief vormt. Het produceren van een nieuwe auto is op zich al niet zo milieuvriendelijk, het blijven gebruiken van bestaande producten is veel beter. Milieu is zoveel meer dan CO2 uitstoot. Maar... de industrie en dus het groot kapitaal heeft niets aan repareren en hergebruik. Dat helpt alleen het MKB en daar willen de groepen genoemd in mijn oorspronkelijke commentaar juist ook graag vanaf...
@@carsyoungtimerfreak1149en waarom precies is het idee van een accu fundamenteel fout? Een accu haalt het hoogste rendement. Voor alle andere alternatieven heb je veel meer stroom nodig en veel meer infrastructuur. Ook worden de auto's door deze andere technieken veel duurder omdat ze veel complexer worden. Een elektromotor is heel simpel, en stroom leveren met een accu is dat ook. Bij synthetische brandstof stoot nog steeds allemaal gassen uit die we niet meer willen. Enkel het fijnstof wordt minder, maar de rest niet.
@@Rob-ky1ob Accu's laten het afweten als er veel energie gevraagd wordt. Gebruik lang een zaklampapp op je smartphone en de accu capaciteit holt terug. Over het spontaan ontbranden, zeker een risico bij de huidige generatie accu, begin ik maar niet. En betere accu's? Hoe lang wordt dit al geroepen? We willen geen gassen... Wie is 'we' eigenlijk? Dus ook geen open haarden meer, geen BBQ, etc.? Mij best, beide zaken hebben voor mij geen waarde. Infrastructuur, goed punt. Maar... die is er voor accu EVs ook nog niet echt. Ga eens naar een flatgebouw en kijk hoeveel laadpalen er nodig zijn... En daar zit de crux. Lees het interview in het AD met Erisman. Ik hoop dat jij nooit van gemotoriseerd eigen vervoer afhankelijk zult zijn!
Zal nooit een EV kopen, te brandgevaarlijk. Ze zouden verboden moeten worden in elke parkeergarage. Het leed is niet te overzien als daar iets gebeurt, zeker in grote steden als Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam en Den Haag.
EVs vatten procentueel gezien veel minder vaak vlam dan ICE of BHEV. Ook is de brand op dit schip niet ontstaan door een EV, en zijn de meeste EVs intact van het schip gehaald. Dus wat is nou precies je probleem? Wat je nu doet is angst saaien door onwaarheden te verspreiden.
Want in een parkeergarage in Enschede of Weert is 't minder erg? 🙂

EVs do NOT reignite after weeks. The process of thermal runaway is energy based and is a factor of the EV's state of charge.
As a matter of practice the state of charge is ALWAYS low when being shipped. Just enough to get them onboard and off again, plus a bit for running AC etc.
The water itself is a NaCL solution and the controlled short circuit actually gives off hazardous gases rather than liquid pollutants.
Furthermore, ROROs will continue to operate largely as is, while determining better means of fire "containment" as distinct from suppression.

It was not an EV that caused the fire and there were no Tesla vehicles on board, so why even mention Musk? I dislike Musk too, but EVs are not the problem here. 25 out of 100.000 EVs sold catch fire. For gasoline vehicles, its 1530 out of 100.000 sold. You see how much more common it is for gasoline vehicles to catch fire? Where is your smug face now?

@@Jack02517 Do you know how heat and draft works? The fire on the higher decks would cause a draft of fresh air coming from the lower decks. This means smoke will not go down due to it being hot (heat rises) and due to the draft coming from below.
@@Jack02517 they have cleaned all surviving cars very thorougly, there are videos of that. They can be seen driving by workers, then washed, and then driven off the boat. Conatimated stuff can be cleaned, and that is exactly what they did.

Its to prevent theft since this harbor is not meant to off-load vehicles. The vehicles are often stored together with their keys. So you do not want unauthorized people walking around. Its not to keep things secret, but it is to keep things safe.
Especially since I counted five BMW M3 CSs which are worth like 250 grand each
