It was changed in the musical. In the movie H. Duke did make fun of H. Mac, but just like they were doing before. Just like the old way she and H. M. did along with Chandler.

as much as i love the musical, i will always dislike what they decided to do with heather duke. in the movie she was manipulated by almost everyone and you honestly felt really bad for her until she did all that awful stuff. idk but it just kinda irks me.
exactly!! i think it's because the writers gave her all these quips and they overlook her awful personality in favor of her being "memable". it's like that with jd, where they overlook his sociopathic tendencies and obvious issues in favor of his looks and his tragic past. duke is a great example of power corrupting, and it deepens her character even more. her bulimia is treated in a much more lighthearted manner and people gloss over it. also, she didn't really say those things in "shine a light reprise". that was heather mcnamara's subconscious. sorry if this comment is really long. i don't really have people to discuss things like this lmao
@@ellabella2805 Agreed. The musical also ditched McNamara being raped by Kurt, in favour of “Blue” and Chandler’s mirror spitting scene (which made her feel more deep of a character) in favour of making it more “funny” and lighthearted.
@@ellabella2805 Hell, even Veronica got “memeable”. In the film Duke was more of a twisted Veronica, showing how the oppressed want to be the oppressors.
@Green Paper how i like to distinguish the two is that the heathers movie is a *DARK* comedy, but heathers the musical is a dark *COMEDY*. heathers as movie just works better i feel like, and is able to explored in terms of characterization that the musical isn't. i still love the musical, but it just doesn't give me the same feel and message the movie does
@Green Paper but the uk version does a better job i feel like. jamie muscato (the loml) actually plays jd as a real, scary character, and heather duke's character is given redemption at the end. they also used you're welcome instead of blue, which made the date rape thing a lot less lighthearted
Despite me knowing and loving Heathers thanks to the musical, Heather Duke has much more depth in the movie 😩 Like we get to know more about how she felt being oppressed by Chandler, even bullied by McNamara and the roles only reversed when she took Chandler's place. In the musical she was always the bad guy, and McNamara is portrayed as the least powerful in the group throughout the whole musical. The movie also give us a clearer image of Heathers' relationship, like there were times when they genuinely enjoyed each other's company. Also I kinda feel like all three Heathers have feelings for Veronica lol,,, In the musical V approach them for her own benefit but in the movie it was never explained why they hangout together, even when V is clearly bored most of the time, and it was Heathers who tried to please her and keep her around. It was more like the Heathers need her instead of the other way around.
Thank you. I can't find the movie and I wanted to see their relationship since I heard Veronica kissed her. In the musical she is just made evil and nothing more.
JD just wanted everyone dead. He probably manipulated Duke into being mean so Veronica would agree with him to kill her. Remember how excited he was when she got fed up with Duke and suggested killing her?
She wasn't nice on the inside. She wanted to be Red and said she prayed for something bad to happen to Heather Chandler. JD said: Be who you really want to be.
2:41 Oof, am I the only one that thinks that Heather kinda likes Veronica? I mean, in the last scene (5:47) she looks at Veronica in astonishment, and in this scene she's all nice to her. I haven't watched the whole movie, but I feel that her feelings started when Veronica told her to maybe see a doctor. This was probably the only time any of her friends had ever been this concerned with her health. Maybe it's just me, I dunno. 🤔
I'm screen shotting this to my friend XD Me and her are major shippers with Duke x Veronica and we totally agree!! We personally like the movie better than the musical so we always base stuff off that lol
i think so too! also im pretty sure the stall scene (where ronnie say to duke that she should see a doctor) was supposed to be longer (i read the script somewhere on internet) and in it heather c and m were still bullying duke and veronica was telling her to not listen to them and joked with her. also after the scene at the locker (where duke put her hand on ronnie eye) veronica try to call her on the phone to apologize about her reaction to seeing her with chandler scrunchie. i know it also just friendship but i find them cute as a couple.
I still can't believe she's gone it breaks my heart knowing we have lost yet another star from our childhood that we all knew and loved. 90s Con isn't going to be the same without her I was looking so forward to meeting her but at least now she's no longer in pain. It makes my happy too know she's in a place where she will always be beautiful. You are in all of our hearts forever Shannon. RIP ❤
I love how Heather Duke starts curling her hair after Heather Chandler dies. It immediately tipped me off to who the next Alpha Bitch was gonna be (seeing as McNamara already has curly hair but seems to stay in the background mostly)
@@lovebug9586 right? I mean I like the musical, but since I watched the movie first I liked Heather Duke a lot a then seeing how they ruined her in the musical made me mad, and people don’t even give the movie a chance, I have read people saying they hate the movie, but then clarifying they haven’t even watched it. The musical also romanticised JD a lot
I know that a lot of people said that JD manipulated Heather Duke into becoming this despicable individual in the latter half of the film, and don't get me wrong, there is some validity in that. However, the thing is Duke always had the potential to be as bad as she eventually got in the film, JD simply pushed her into becoming the person she always wanted to be. Her costuming helps allude to this too, as earlier in the film she would often sneak in some hints of red into her green wardrobe ensembles. Obviously, she was trying to emulate her former leader Heather Chandler, but at the same time, you could also say it symbolizes her secretly desiring for that role of leadership. The actress's natural dark brown hair was even dyed/ highlighted with a subtle red hue, insinuating this as being the case. While few in number, she also had her own fair share of meanness sprinkled about the film before Chandler's death. Hell, even when Chandler died, the fact she came to the funeral dressed in something akin to a cocktail dress shows how she's relishing in the notion of possibly taking Chandler's place. Though this assumption is debatable when considering the context. Now, I do blame JD for having incited her into becoming as awful as she later was in the story, as I don't entirely believe she would've been so eager to be that way earlier. But at the same time, I could see how Duke would've desired the same power and influence Chandler had, including the persona that came with it. Then again, this could be read as just one of many perspectives on the matter, so it is suggestible.
Also, she made waves in her hair kinda like Chandler's when she died, but still didn't have the courage to change her green outfits to red ones, until J.D gave her the red scrunchie.
@@bagelbra1n That's also true 😁. Really shows how JD unlocked the inner mean girl within Duke by passing on the crown (srunchie). What was originally subtle hints of red in Duke's green wardrobe before Chandler's death immediately turned into full-blown red outfits afterwards 😉. You gotta appreciate the film's visual storytelling.
I think it’s a little more complicated than just that though. Honestly I feel like a lot of her meanness came from her lashing out after being mistreated for so long. I mean, yeah she dressed like she was going to a party when Chandler died but you have to remember - Chandler was downright awful to Duke. She forced her to bend over and act as a writing desk for Veronica to write on in a room full of perfectly usable tables. Not to mention derogatory comments about her bulimia and the whole ‘did you have a brain tumor for breakfast’ thing over croquet. And yes she was cruel to McNamara, but out of all the group, Chandler was the nicest to McNamara. And McNamara’s tendency to grovel to whoever is the leader meant she didn’t stand up for Duke when the latter was being bullied. So naturally, there’s some resentment towards her there. Not to mention Duke’s also surprisingly nice to Veronica most of the time, probably because Veronica was the only one who didn’t tease Duke over her eating disorder and actually told her she should get help for it. As for JD’s manipulation, JD works by playing to people’s weaknesses and desires. He knows Duke wants to be the queen bee, so he uses that to get everyone to sign the suicide note that he passed off as a petition. It’s not really JD’s fault vs Duke’s fault. It’s more that Duke was so drunk on the power she was getting after being belittled and undermined for so long that she failed to notice she was being manipulated.
At 3:14 I’m glad Veronica slapped Heather because just because somebody’s not popular, that doesn’t mean that their life doesn’t matter. She deserved that.
