In fact, there are first scientific answers to your question: Overtone singing activates the right side of the brain particularly intensely. www.oberton.org/en/how-your-brain-handles-overtones/
He's singing overtone while making hand movements to match the pitch. It's like patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time. So impressive!
Bin begeistert, klingt interesant und schön. Hätte niemals gedacht, dass so etwas überhaupt geht. Man lernt nie aus (ich hab aber auch keine Ahnung von Musik und Gesang, auch wenn ich beides sehr mag).
I can´t understand how is it possible to produce that minor third relation (not present in harmonic series) on the third bass note, vi degree, exactly at 0:14... I can only sing the major 3rd above fundamental note
Finally someone askes this question! Thank you :). This is a trick that demonstrates how our ears adapt to our expectations. In the scores (www.oberton.org/portfolio-item/pachelbel-canon/) you see that I lower the fundamental note by -43ct. That lowers the 5th harmonic by the same amount and then is accepted by the ear as a minor third. The minor third in just intonation is 14ct higher than in the equal tempered system, anyway. That makes it easyer to fool the ear.
Thank you for the explanation! It makes total sense and now that I hear it with more care it´s easy to understand how it is possible to do it, absolutely amazing technique :) Impressive how the brain falls for those tricks! I´ll keep training and hope that one day I´ll be able to get that great voice projection.
@@overtonesinging Wow, great question and great answer. I've got a question of my own. Is overtone signing the same as whistling-while-singing. For example, I can whistle double-high G on its own, and then introduce an "ooo" sound three octaves higher, then cut out the "ooo" sound while continuing to whistle the same note.
Thanks. This is an exercise designed to enhance coordination between the left and right sides. The left hand, governed by the right hemisphere, adheres to the bass melody of the fundamental processed in the left hemisphere.

I was aware of this type of technique of singing and I thought the overtones just came out as a result so it would behave depending on the chest voice.. but independently and separately controlling the overtone?!?!? that's crazy.
Overtone singing is mainly controlled by the second vocal tract resonance. This is also responsible for the vowel color. The trick is to gradually transition to a double resonance with the third vocal tract resonance, which characterizes overtone singing. You have to practise it for a long time, but in principle anyone who can speak does it anyway, just unconsciously.
@@overtonesinging I totally get how people do it unconsciously at times.. but I can see this takes some serious practice and discipline to master. Amazing job on the video!
Thanks. I haven't tried it yet. It would work straightforwardly if the upper melody consisted exclusively of the harmonics of the respective basic voice. Spontaneously, I would assume that Bach composed in a more complex way. But one can also achieve a few notes that "dance out of line" with little tricks. Why don't you try it?
@@overtonesinging I was trying to ask something outrageous and impossible! But now I must step down! If you attempt this, please share! It would be awesome!
The secret is resonance. I amplify single harmonics by coupling two resonances and I dampen the normal voice by slightly squeesing my vetricular folds. Sounds difficult, but pratice is quiet easy.
It would be interesting to know how overtone singing is learned. Can anyone learn to do this, or does it require special, natural talent, or inborn anatomical features of the vocal tract?
Hi @tom-kz9pb, the only requirement is that you can speak. The basis is the resonance behavior of the mouth and throat. The principle is kind of similar to playing the Jew's harp.
@@overtonesinging Amazing! I was just thinking about all the neural activity when you're signing both tones. From what I've gathered, overtones are registered on the right side of the brain, but so is the motor cortex for your left hand. So you're signing the fundamental tone while listening for the overtone with one hemisphere and vice versa. Perhaps the ultimate in patting your head while rubbing your belly. 🤭

Anyone who can speak can easily learn this singing technique. You don't even have to hit the right notes because the overtones always sound pure. You learn it in five stages, which take anywhere from 5 minutes to 12 months. So it's much quicker than playing the piano ;).
