My apologies, it's a normal HOB filter. Can't recall the brand. I've had it for more than two years now.

Am I opinion you would’ve had a cloudy water, no matter what. You added a bunch of beneficial bacteria. However, there was no food for the bacteria to eat. And what you had was a bacteria die off. Not a bacterial bloom.

Bacterial bloom is normal and will go away by itself, light or no light.
