This makes a lot of sense, by straightening your hair the detangling process would be easier, less knots, less tension. Probably the reason our hair was thriving during childhood, We would get the press with the hot comb and maintain it until it was time to do it again lol
Baby!!!! And those stove curlers!! My mom used to give me those Shirley Temple curls and couldn’t nobody tell me nothing. It’s something special about wearing your hair down! 😂
I don’t straighten my hair but I blow it out and I have seen so much growth since I started doing this! It’s less tangles and no single knots!! I love it here ❤
I feel the same way. I like to alternate between wash n go styles and blow outs and my blow outs leave me with wayyyy less knots. But I still love both 😅
@gentlestormwyatt I really think it just depends. WnG are great if you maintain a regular trim schedule and are willing to rinse and rework the hair almost daily (dickey's method). The problem with WnG's is that people usually don't manage them the way Dickey details, which leads to drying, tangling, and breakage. Fresh ends are necessary to avoid mangling. Also, a neater, even appearance tends to be preferred, which means not only are regular trims needed, but the occasional cut as well, as various hairs curl, clump, and hang differently. Contrary to the concept, it's a style with a lot of manipulation. Trims reduce damage from handling, friction, and tangling/ knotting. But it also requires a lot of product, specifically drying products like mousse and/ or gel (hence dickey's advisement of a cowash reset every other day or so, which significantly reduces tangling and increases manageability infinitely). Your hair will grow at the same rate it always has, but it will take a little longer to realize your goals with WnG's largely due all the trims (if the management and handling is on point). The "stretch n' protect" natural (the middle way) is an option, and actually my preferred approach. This works when you don't really care about doing a single thing to your hair unless you absolutely have to, short of locing lol (but this has to work for your lifestyle). It follows a lot of the older knowledge, requires the least number of product, and doesn't not require frequent or constant trimming or cutting, if at all. It has its pros and cons as well, though. Straightening your hair as a natural is another option. Higher temps of heat (and sometimes a chemical like Brazilian blowouts) is introduced regularly. Same growth rate though. But if you like to do a bit more than the absolute least but aren't keen on regular regimented trimming or the upkeep needs of a WnG, this is a solid option. You have to be wary of the amount and frequency of heat though, as well as any chemical decisions, as it can easily lead to dryness, splitting, and breaking/snapping. It's breaking bonds responsible for the hair's strength and elasticity: hydrogen mostly, but excessive styling will break the covalent bonds too. Over time, the hydrogen bond will weaken and will not be able to reset itself so easily (we call that heat-trained). Heat can also damage or fatigue the hair cuticles over time, which can change porosity. So it's important to use solid products that will help your hair retain strength and elasticity. The older ends will also fatigue of the heat at some point as well, so trimming is definitely unavoidable. But it doesn't need to be so frequent if the heat and manipulation are controlled, unless an even appearance is simply desired. It definitely keeps your strands from knotting around itself and others, or tangling. So the hair will reach goal lengths in less time compared to a WnG. Locs/ bound unstretched natural hair (check out the Zambian Rapunzel) will get you there faster than anything though lol. Honestly, it just boils down to the root of what causes loss of length. Our hair will grow in any state, and can grow very long in any state. But it takes consistency and patience (and willingness). Some states will take a bit longer, but all have their maintenance requirements. We just have to remain cognizant of and consistent in our practices. My apologies for the dissertation lol.
@@naturalnadinee I’ve always been a straight natural. Wash and go’s weren’t really a thing when I went natural back in 2013. I tried keeping it in its natural state but it was a lot of work and my hair was always dry 😕 I’m really enjoying learning from your videos! I’ve noticed my hair will get a certain length and then kind of stay there. I’m trying to find methods to get it to grow past that length.
@@Goddess_of_AlchemyI used to battle with getting rid of tangles and end up losing more hair during that process. Getting a silk press is the best thing ever. I just wash and deep condition and the silk press lasts me until I wash it again. No hair loss or breakage.
Girl wearing my hair in a wrap and leaving it alone is the best thing I could’ve ever done for my hair. My hair doesn’t mind the heat either at all it’s healthy and doing its thing. Also laying back on those tight buns and ponytails makes a huge difference too ladies just wear it straight down! 💁🏽♀️✌🏽
All of this makes sense. The girls on the relaxer boxes used to have natural hair with silk presses. It shows that straight hair can very healthy and full especially without chemicals.
I used to be worried about silk presses and not being able to grow my hair with them but I notice that my hair actually grows more because I don’t touch it as often like you said and it’s the only style I can keep for a long period of time. I can’t even keep braids for long because it itches. Thank you for reassuring me 😊
I told my mom this years ago. I feel like when I was bleaching and straightening my hair it grew like crazy. I wasn't deep conditioning at all and it grew so long. I'd wash, blow dry it, hot comb it and then grease my scalp with Blue Magic and wear it in cornrows. I never oiled it until the next wash day. The natural hair phenom hadn't started. It just worked for me.
wow with bleaching too is impressive! thanks for sharing glad you do what works for you with your routine cause thats all that counts at the end of the day x
@naturalnadinee Yes, actually I used the Dark and Lovely boxed color so it wasn't straight Bleach but it was still considered lifting the natural color of my hair. But like you said, the sebum was able to travel down the shaft of my hair so I guess that it really does help when our hair is stretched or straight.
Yes I bleach now idc I wish UA-cam let you insert pictures. Idk the natural hair phenomenon was amazing and we learned a lot BUT it has gotten a bit toxic
😮 what kind of MAGIC are you using? I had bleached hair last year and it was my first time. Please share your secrets... I miss having pink hair sometimes.
I've been natural since 2009 and heat trained since 2015. I'm so glad to see more people realizing the benefits of stretching hair with moderate heat use. I agree with everything shared in this video with the exception of 'heat sealing the cuticle'. Your hair may be less prone to dryness, but that doesn't equate to heat 'sealing' the cuticle. Heat styling tools like flat irons and blow dryers temporarily raise the cuticles, especially if used at high temperatures. Over time, excessive (keyword) heat exposure can damage the cuticle structure, leading to permanent damage and raised cuticles.
Yes moderate heat styling has been a game changer for me glad to see someone who has had longevity in this routine thank you for sharing && yes girl it’s well known that heat seals the cuticle (you can research to fact check) but you’re right and as I mentioned in the video heat can also damage or even remove cuticle scales completely (with excessive use) also your hair looks amazing! Absolute goals!! xxx
@@kizziekente2468I don’t have sebum either so i literally have to use a little oil/pomade on my hair everyday. I have to oil my scalp 2-3 times a week or I will have so much shedding. I’m not sure how to get sebum it’s probably poor diet or me over washing my hair at first. I also have to moisturize my hair with deep conditioner & a protein d/c w/heat & I also have to put in a light leave in cream conditioner before blow drying. I also have to prepoo before I shampoo
Can you advise me on heat training? I've been trying for 2 years. I only flat iron on wash day weekly. Still shrinks up to my ears. It's 3 c. What kind of blow drying? Pick? Comb attachment? Brush attachment? Dry when wet or after air drying in twists? Help! 😂
I have been eating up your content with a shovel 😄 You are officially my Fairy (Straight)Hair Mother - Got so fed up with my curly hair and having no time to do anything daily but put it back in a sad boring bun. Now 'm ignoring the old natural hair ways and fully embracing straight hair, this feels like 😙🤌 Thanks for all the advice!!
Girll when i say i FEEEL You! Ive never been so in love with my hair and so at ease with my journey. Im glad i get to share it and hear how other peoples are going too xx
It's been a year for me girl!! And no heat damage....I just started taking the health of my hair seriously& cutting off the damage (I'm gonna dust ever month until my strands are healthy with no single strand knots). I also wash a straighten ever week 😮😂. Your not going to go back I promise you!! Good luck on your journey ❤
Has you hair started to dry stretched? I've been a straightened natural for 2 years and my 3C hair shrinks up to my ears...and it's shoulder length! Am I not flatironing at a high enough temp. I only straighten on wash day.😮
I used to wear wash and go’s for years and decided to become a straight hair natural last year. My hair is growing so long due to the lack of manipulation. Not to mention I wake up with great looking hair without having to do much. I exercise a lot and that was the only thing stopping me from going straight natural. Once I learned how to maintain my hair with the workouts, I made the switch and don’t plan on going back to wash and go’s any time soon. I love how easy it is to do and maintain my hair now!
@@jessicalynn9204 Sure! I use a silk hair tie and tie it into a loose but not too loose ponytail. Then I wrap my hair around that tie and secure it with either a regular hair tie or another silk one and I also use any sweat band to cover my edges. The key to keep your hair straight after the workout is to wait until your body completely cools down before taking the bun and sweat band off. Maybe 15-20 min after my shower is when I take it down and it doesn’t revert, it looks great.
If you don’t mind me asking, how did you get your hair to stay straight when you first were transitioning into being a straight natural? Because when I was younger, I relaxed my hair and of course it was super straight and silky, but then I allowed it to grow out and ended up having to cut a decent amount off obviously due to breakage from, where my hair was still relaxed, and where my hair natural hair grew in but even after my relaxer grew out and I was a natural straight girly, my hair was still super SUPER straight and silky. Eventually, I stopped wearing my hair straight and started wearing it in its curly natural state 24/7, but now I got the point where I want to go back to being a straight natural, but every time I get my hair straightened or straighten it myself, it reverts back almost immediately to where I can’t even wear my hair in that style because it just looks absolutely ridiculous and it’s a waste of time and money to even straighten it because it just reverts back, I do not want to perm or relax it or or put chemicals in it, but I do want to go back to having that super super straight silky, shiny hair again and it’s like no matter what I do it does not last I either have to go back over it again with the flat iron every day, or it’ll just only last maybe 2 days and it’ll start getting poofy literally within hours of getting it done professionally or within minutes if I do it myself Help! What do I do?
@@brittanylane9669 I transitioned from relaxed to natural in the same way. Kept my hair straightened and then when most of it grew out, I did the big chop to get rid of the relaxed ends and wore wash and go’s consistently for years. Then when I decided to transition to be a straight natural, I went to the salon to learn more about how to straighten in a healthy way (when I was relaxed, I did not need nearly as much moisture and would often have a ton of heat damage doing it on my own back in the day). When I started, it would be super straight at the salon and if it was the slightest bit humid, my hair would start to revert as well. Before transitioning fully, I was only going to the salon to get straightening once or twice a year so it’s understandable. Once I bought my own flat iron and perfected my silk press on my own, it started to get used to the heat and rarely reverts. You have to get your hair used to the heat. I also am not afraid of turning up the heat, I have 3c/ 4a hair. I don’t do anything less than 420-430 with just one pass and my hair, since it is more used to consistent heat, barely ever reverts. Make sure you’re not rushing the flat iron through each section, the pass needs to be a little slower and steady. I wash and style every 2 weeks and use the same heat protectant and leave in. Design essentials has a very good thermal protectant serum that I live by and even after over a year of straightening my own hair every 2 weeks, I surprisingly still have 95% of my curls. I don’t really care to keep mine anyway because I don’t ever wear my natural curls anymore, but it’s nice to see the health. Also, deep conditioning every wash is also a must.
Finally someone saying this ❤. I may not do silk press but I always blow dry before a protective style and I have seen growth in weeks that use to take months. Girlies, this is facts ❤
I’ve been telling folks this for YEARS. My hair seemed like it never grew before heat but when I was getting monthly silk presses it grew like a weed (combined with dusting my ends every other month).
I'm a straight hair natural and I always thought my hair grew faster with my hair in it's natural state. But im happy I came across your video, it helps validate my choices. When I flat iron my hair and trim it helps my ends from breaking any further. My hair grows fast, but It can break off as fast as it grows. I have had a push back lately and my hair has gotten a little shorter. I will never forget another girl saying her hair being damaged doesn't make her any less human and that stuck with me for years. UA-cam recommended this video at the perfect time
Love the video and also wanted to add something. People typically say the growth retention of hair is based on genetics, hair regimen, and manipulation. This is true, but also curl pattern needs to be included. Comparing the extreme ends of the spectrum 1a to 4c, the 1a retains length better as it has less chance to KNOT around other stands and sebum travels down the hairs shaft easily compared to 4c. Even in type 4 category, 4a would have an easier time retaining length than 4c as the knotting is not as extreme based on how the hair wants to curl/coil onto itself which forces the individual to use more caution in detangling or the hair will break using the same exertion in detangling a looser pattern.
Can you please advise me on heat training. I've been straightened natural for 2 years and there's no reduction in shrinkage. I only straighten on wash day weekly at 360 degrees after blowing to stretch. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
@@lechatnoirstewart1717 Hi! Sorry for late reply. I'm not the best expert when it comes to heat training, but for me whenever it comes to straightening my hair, after I shampoo twice, I use a silicone based conditioner on my hair and leave it on for thirty minutes. When I blowdry my hair I use a leave in that has heat protectant properties and I keep the blow-dryer set to medium. Lastly, I know this is not for everyone, but I use grease to flat iron my hair. 😂 Not the Blue Magic kind, but the Softer Argan Oil pressing grease. Believe it or not, it helps in keeping my hair straight, something about the petroleum helps protect against heat damage, and it keeps humidity from frizzing up my hair. So far I haven't suffered any heat damage! I also do a protein treatment once a month.
@@naturalnadinee the only problem I have now is after 5/6 years of wearing it curly/Afro it refuses to stay straight 🙆🏾♀️ should I bring out the pink lotion and dax once more lol x
@@femdivinemind7777if your hair refuses to stay straight it's because it's healthy. Heat damages the cuticle even if you do retain more length. It's not a big deal though even if it's a little unhealthy from heat as long as it looks normal
I don’t know how or why we as a community reach the same phases/ideas at close to the same time. (Maybe we’ve been on our natural hair journey for a while and have mastered that area) I’ve been natural since 2014 and have reached all my goals wearing my hair curly. I’ve went through all the hacks and methods out there. I’ve maintained my long curly hair for yeeears. Towards the end of last year, I decided to wear my hair hair blown out more and decided in 2024 I’ll want to wear it more straightened instead of 3 or 4x a year I’ve done in the past. It’s so kismet to go to UA-cam and find ladies who have made the same choice. Thanks for sharing all of the insight that you have. It’s definitely made me empowered to do my hair at home rather than spending 130-150 for a silk press at a salon. My Amazon carts has delivered and I now have everything to do it myself, including a professional pair of shears❤ One question, do you still use the round brush to blow dry? I purchased the wooden brush you mentioned but mine also has boar bristles. I have High density so the round brush, although it may be preferred is not the best for me. Please share a current wash day/silk press day. I know it takes a long time to make but it’s extremely appreciated 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜Please excuse my long windedness with writing ☺️
Hey girl honestly i so agree! Im seeing so many naturalistas make the same move and im glad we are ambracing our hair in all forms and enjoying the journey not being fixed to one thing! and yes the more your straighten your own hair the better youll get at it and learn how to get the best results and even better with less heat! && yes i use the round brush because its easier to get my ends straight but i the wooden brush is still a staple when im styling my hair and especially after using dry shampoo to help smooth it into my strands, i find the round brush is only good for blow outs xxx
I’m a big believer in this, I have 2B/2C hair and was wearing it curly for a long time but it wasn’t retaining length, cut it and started straightening it once a week and it has retained its length and gotten so much longer, quickly! Might do wash n go’s in the summer since it gets humid here but cooler seasons are for wearing it straight for sure. I can go longer w trims too.
Great video/information. I find that my hair retains its length by wearing box braids without extensions. What a game changer!! Wish I had done this back in 2020 instead of going back to the relaxer (huge mistake). It has grown faster since January 2024 than in the past 4 years.
I'm definitely finding this to be true. And putting the Bambu product over my DC before adding a heat cap, wow what a difference! My hair came out so silky and has stayed so moisturized even though using heat.
Thank you so much girl! I was fighting for my life to keep my curls when I knew straightening my hair was just the way I wanted to wear it! Started flourishing now I’ve stuck to that!xx
This is something that I haven't tried yet, but thought about. Watching your video is confirmation. I know I'm months late, but thank you for this video.
The logic of the sebum travel makes a lot of sense, and i believe its thesame logic as when you get a trim. Sebum travels faster and covers the entire strands
I am definitely interested in being a straight hair natural because my hair retains length when it is straight. I need to find a good regimen and hair products. Thank you for sharing your methods and experiences.
I just learned this about my hair last week. After having to chop off about 4 inches. Every summer I try to do more protective styles like wigs or ponytails with my natural curls. But it damages my hair every time. I am trying to avoid heat so my hair is not damaged, and in the mean time trying to keep up with natural hair does worst damage . I just have this idea that heat is really bad. Even though my hair is it’s healthiest when I straighten and wash and condition on bi weekly basis. Plus go and get my hair professionally trimmed and a treatment every month. Anyways straight natural hair for life lol. And I am so excited to see the growth now
I probably would gain more length if I started doing more if I blow dry or silk press my hair more, but I just don't want to seriously alter my hair texture too much.
When I get my smoothing treatment done at the salon (which usually lasts about 3 months), I noticed my hair looks healthier and grows. I will start getting that and doing my own hair at home with the system in my hair.
Whoa, this is so true when I was younger my mom relaxed my hair when I was five my hair was long and it had length. But fast forward i kept straightening my hair day after day until my hair was damaged. And my hair wouldn't grow. So i cut it and now I am suffering from protein overload 👍🏾
I workout daily in a sauna & im a straight hair natural. I roll my hair, then wrap it with a du rag & edge scarf, then put a hat on or I wrap it, put a wrap tie on, then du rag on top of that, edge scarf & then my hat or my satin bow bonnet. I’m able to preserve my hair pretty well.
I've been considering becoming a straight hair natural. I've tried the mini twists protective style and that doesnt help with the breakage and single strand knots. I keep my hair moisturized but i have been at a stand still for like 5 years
im not a black woman but i do have pretty tight waves/curls and i totally agree, when its wash day for me i prevent it from curling on itself and keep it stretched with hair ties etc, and ive been having less damage and breakage hen when i wear it completely natural and unstretched
This video just earned you a new subscriber! 🙌🏽Lol I love how you explained this and it all makes soooo much sense! I am about 2-3 months into my new straight hair natural journey so I’m still trying to figure some things out. Thank you for sharing the scientific research you have completed 🫶🏼
I really enjoy & ❤❤ your channel! Science based facts and it all makes total sense. A lot of the team natural hair practices were not the best practices for my hair & scalp tbh. I have started wearing my natural hair straight, it feels so much healthier already and it’s thriving. 😊
Very helpful video, i had a feeling this was the case. My hair is relaxed so i normally blow dry it but i think i will go back to flat ironing it as it lasts much longer when the cuticles are sealed. I steam once a week. Also its nice to hear another UK accent.
I understand what you're talking about, because i wore two string twists for a long time and my hair is 4c and i had so much brokeage every time i comb or re-twist my hair, just reason on Oct 3,2024, i decided to get a silk press for my birthday on 6th...i did and so much dead hair shredded, i was really surprised that i still have shoulder lenght hair...i am not good with maintaing my natural 4c hair; i probably stick with silk press for a while once a month and trims. L 😂L!
I went to target and got some new products. (Had a $50 gift card!!) long story short after all that my hair literally ended up the same. It was so sad. Frizzy, I'm still hearing snapping when I try to detangle or even run the comb thru. It did feel just kinda maybe dry or a squeaky cleaned feeling after I finished? Idk what's wrong🤷🏾♀️I know the water is hard here too could that be my issue? I used in order: oil massage/heated-rosemary+jojoba+peppermint blend -L'Oreal bonding treatment -Nexxus humectetress shampoo& conditioner -Joico hydrator -Lador treatment -Perfect 10 leave in -Tresseme Keratin heat protectant -lite biosilk serum I will never grow my hair if I can't retain length from all the breaking. 😢 I know my ends are ragged. Maybe that's it too. I tried to clip them but I don't think I cut enough
Hard water is your issue. Get a chleating shampoo and deep condition afterwards. Try to wash your hair every 7-10 days and use the chleating shampoo once a month. Another option instead of chleating shampoo is getting a Showerstick which is a water softener.
Hey girl! I know for sure hard water really affects the hair also I would try the bonding treatment after the shampoo instead and also cut off the dead ends that need to go (professionally if possible) to give you the best chance you can at reducing breakage xx
I’m starting to see that while I love wearing my hair natural, I get crazy single strand knots. I don’t even want to wear it natural without blowing it out because I’m scared of SSKs, they’re crazy. The last trim I did was mainly SSKs. My straight hair uses a lot less product too, just a bit of oil.
Hello Nadine! Your hair is amazing! I have some questions for you if you don’t mind, I’m kinda new to this straight natural stuff and I was wondering how long have you been a straight natural? Even though you’re a straight natural, do you still deal with split ends often? If yes, do you do anything in specific to prevent them? how often do you trim? Do you do any steam treatments? If yes, how often? And how frequently do you re-straighten? So far I love being a straight natural but split ends are my big challenge right now, I would really appreciate it if you had some tips! Thank you 😊
Split ends is my issue as well. My hair lacks moisture. I hope I figure it out soon. I think I will. I started off flat ironing weekly to alter my hair and then to two times a week and now about every 2-3 times. I started off using a detox shampoo which was a bad idea. I’m 2 months in. I hope I get this right so I can start retaining length.
I never detangle my hair when it is wet. I soften my hair with a hair lotion or a creamy oil and butter mixture. Also, wash and gos are a big no no for my hair type, it's too coily and it tangles too easily for that. I wear my hair in stretched styles and I rarely do a wash and go.
Amazing video ❤decided to stop doing wash and go’s. My hair was breaking and I didn’t know what to do. So I changed my routine now I shampoo and deep condition my hair, then I blow dry without flat ironing to reduce heat damage (I’m not used to it so I am being careful) then I get medium braids and leave it 2 weeks then repeat. Any tips for trimming please? Wish me luck ❤️
Hey girl! Sounds like you’ve got your routine on deck! Good to use minimal heat as it’s not always about having straight hair just mainly stretched so you can maintain it better. And as someone who has botched my at home trims so many times, if you can go to a professional every 4-6 months for a trim! Your hair will thank you xxx
i really need to do a routine because i have 4b fine hair and im about to cut it because it feels like its not growing and i tried being curly natural and it just was more work so I'll definitely be trying these tips
I finally found a way to keep my hair straight in hot humid weather (unless I’m in a beach town on the east coast). 😩 Anyone live in a beach town on the east coast? How do you keep your hair straight? Is it possible? If so, please share tips. My hair draws from the ocean and goes wild and crazy.
Omg if you’ve nailed humidity that is such a bonus! I never really thought of the ocean water that’s just made me think! I live in gloomy UK so I don’t have this problem :( xxx
I brush my hair everyday in a silk press. But I don’t use heat between silk presses. Is brushing my hair everyday breaking my hair hair off and not retaining length
Hi there! This is the very first video I saw on your channel. I just recently became a straight hair natural. I have a question…..do you know if the sebum can still travel down the strands if I wear it in a protective style like flat twists? I’m curious because I was wondering if I had to wear it like yours here in the video🤔
Hey I use carols daughter pomade for my hair because its light and not greasy. I use it almost every day and it minimize breakage/shedding. What shampoo should I use to get this out of my hair since it has beeswax in it? I shampoo every 2-3weeks. So like what shampoo do you use to get the silicone out of your hair from bambu? Maybe I can use that to get pomade out of my hair. I have to use pomade because I think my hair was extremely stripped from me using a harsh detox shampoo. Nothing else was working wash day wasn't enough and oil wasn't enough to nourish my dry hair back to health.
hey girl i actually touch on this in my next video how i literally cant usse detox shampoos because they are toooo drying! for me the keracare hydrating shampoo does a good job of cleansing by removing silicones and not leaving my hair stripped, so probably try that? I would rather double/triple cleanse with a more gentle shampoo than use a clarifying shampoo 100%!! xxx
@@naturalnadinee Thanks so much. The Keracare hydrating shampoo that I just got is sulfate free. I don't think I seen the one with sulfates at my beauty supply store. Does the one you use have sulfates? The one on amazon has the one with sulaftes.
What is your washday process that you don't manipulate the wet hair? How do you dry it? How do you stretch before straightening. When i come out of the shower and dont touch my hair, I'd have to shave my head when it dries, or wet it again. I dont understand your process. Please explain. How can you blow it out without touching when wet? I have 2 driers. The Revair and the Dyson with paddlebrushes, aircurlers, etc. Within months of s trim my ends are ratty again. Which should i use, and how without manipulating wet hair? HELP!!!
I will have to do a whole wash day process for this but long story short I detangle with oil in my hair prior to shampooing and apply DC with my fingers then when I rinse the DC I let my hair air dry before I go with a blow dryer. Because my hair doesn’t really have curls anymore the whole process is just a lot easier I don’t need to stretch my hair because it dries stretched xxx
My past shoulder length hair shrinks to my ears when wet. What can I do to get it to stretch when wet. I need a process for heat training. It's not happening. Do you flat iron everyday to heat train. I only flat iron once a week and in 2 years it's not happening. I honestly think it's a myth at this point.😅
Have you seen the lab muffin beauty science short on how brushing your hair while it’s wet is more beneficial for curly hair? Thanks in advance, I enjoy your content
Yes! And I love lab muffin and it’s definitely beneficial that’s why every curly girl brushes their hair when it’s wet, makes it easier more manageable the style is better etc but still doesn’t change the fragility of the hair when wet xx
Do you hydrate it really well before straightening? Heat/steam treatment etc? And girll them roots be a problem at first but they’ll settle down once hair is trained if you keep on top of it zx
I recommend getting a thio relaxer instead of a traditional hydroxide (lye or no-lye) relaxer. It’s lower on the pH scale and the bonds in your hair don’t get permanently removed.
@naturalnadinee your hair is beautiful natural! Glad you didn't fall for the relaxer nonsense 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿❤❤❤❤❤ I literally just stumbled upon your content and while I'm not interested in being a straight hair natural because I really love my natural curls I admire the black women who are wearing their hair straight yet it is still relaxer free If I ever do decide to wear my natural hair straight you are definitely one I would follow Thanks for the content💗💕🌼🌼

I’m not a straight natural (I don’t even straighten my hair because I can’t do it good myself) but things I’ve noticed. I don’t mess with my hair much when it is straightened/blown out. It also isn’t dry like you mentioned. And it’s easier to see split ends. That’s one reason why my hair is pretty bad because I don’t get trims often 😭 I try to trim every now and then myself but it’s just, something I don’t pay attention to when it’s curly. My hair is so dry when it’s curly and I feel like no matter what I use or how often I moisturize the moisture leaves the next day 😭, never when stretched though.
Straight and wavy hair is weak when it’s wet. Natural hair is weak when it’s dry and should only be combed when it’s wet. Unless straightened whether chemically or thermally
All hear is weak(er) when wet, it should be combed when wet because wet hair has a slippery surface to ease detangling and knots. Also the style turns out loads better than brushing dry curls which is why when I wore my hair natural I always brushed it wet xxx
Hi there. Thanks for sharing. I believe curly hair needs the same level of protection as straight hair, products that protect and seal the cuticle. When you were curly, did you try any high-quality, water-soluble silicone based conditioners or leave ins? These are the products that will address every issue you mentioned for wearing curly hair.
Hey there you’re so right! i swore by silicones even as a curly natural I did ACV rinses as welll to seal the cuticle, my straight hair routine is really just and extension of my curly hair routine but with more lightweight products xx
I'm not sure if I'd be able to wear my hair straight bc I work out 4 to 5 times a week. So, the sweat is REAL! Can anyone give me any insight into this? Any of you work out a lot, but able to keep your hair straight? Help (please)!!
Hi, Moknowshair is a professional hairdresser (for over 10 years) and has a video on her channel about how she maintains her long natural hair, when straight, while working out. There are also a few other straight naturals who also workout and have a video too. I don’t remember all their names but I hope that’s helpful x
There was a video I came across on UA-cam that helped me tremendously. I would always put my hair in one ponytail when I worked out and that was a no no. Now I put it in at least two ponytails (wrap them in two buns with silk scrunchies). You need that part in the middle so it can ventilate. Also, I wear 2 dri-fit headbands. I haven’t had a problem since.
I do the same two pony tails as described by previous poster. I use a band or bandana around my edges to collect sweat. Once my hair is dry (usually 1hr after working out). I put my hair down and it's looks good! My silk press lasts for 2wks. I could do 3wks if my scalp allowed it, because my hair still looks so good, but my scalp is a MESS by 2wks! I also maintain my silk press bounce by doing pin curls at night.
This makes a lot of sense, by straightening your hair the detangling process would be easier, less knots, less tension. Probably the reason our hair was thriving during childhood, We would get the press with the hot comb and maintain it until it was time to do it again lol
Ohhh that childhood press went off🤣 but yeah so much less manipulation on my hair has been a game changer I used to fight for my life detangling xx
Baby!!!! And those stove curlers!! My mom used to give me those Shirley Temple curls and couldn’t nobody tell me nothing. It’s something special about wearing your hair down! 😂
So true, my hair was so long during my middle school. My mom would straighten my hair every two weeks, going back to that routine for sure.
YEP
Yep
I don’t straighten my hair but I blow it out and I have seen so much growth since I started doing this! It’s less tangles and no single knots!! I love it here ❤
Aww love that I might try a blowout here and there!xx
I feel the same way. I like to alternate between wash n go styles and blow outs and my blow outs leave me with wayyyy less knots. But I still love both 😅
@gentlestormwyatt I really think it just depends. WnG
are great if you maintain a regular trim schedule and are willing to rinse and rework the hair almost daily (dickey's method).
This works when you don't really care about doing a single thing to your hair unless you absolutely have to, short of locing
lol (but this has to work for your lifestyle).
My apologies for the dissertation lol.
what type of hairstyles do yo wear when it's blown out? I'm having a hard time finding hairstyles.
What style of blow dryer do you like? Paddle brush attachment, gun with pick attachment, round brush, Revair?
I’m a straight hair natural too and honestly it’s so much more manageable and I always see the growth
Love that! Did you ever wear wash n go’s or its texture before? Or you were always straight xx
Blow outs and brushing with a high quality brush that spreads your natural sebum down your hair shaft are two of the keys to growth.
I’ve noticed this about high quality brushes too make all the difference
My mom just bought me a new brush and I love it
What brushes do you use
What brushes are you all using?
what burshes do you reccommend
@@Ty-mr2kqI noticed crazy hair growth when I bleached my hair too
Yes I bleach now idc I wish UA-cam let you insert pictures.
Absolute goals!! xxx
Why is my hair dry when I straighten it? I don’t understand it’s like I don’t have sebum 🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
Help! 😂

Can you share a tip on how you retain it when working out?
@@Brownbeauty42 thank you so much for responding! This was very helpful!
Finally someone saying this ❤. I may not do silk press but I always blow dry before a protective style and I have seen growth in weeks that use to take months. Girlies, this is facts ❤
Love this! Even blow drying is beneficial too keeping hair stretched definitely helps with growth xx
same, length retention is much easier now that I'm a straight natural. I had too many knots as a curly girl
honestly! I love my curls but damn them knots were getting out of hand! xxx
I’ve been telling folks this for YEARS. My hair seemed like it never grew before heat but when I was getting monthly silk presses it grew like a weed (combined with dusting my ends every other month).
Girlll they better start listening to you cause it’s the truth!xx
I'm a straight hair natural and I always thought my hair grew faster with my hair in it's natural state. But im happy I came across your video, it helps validate my choices. When I flat iron my hair and trim it helps my ends from breaking any further. My hair grows fast, but It can break off as fast as it grows.
I have had a push back lately and my hair has gotten a little shorter. I will never forget another girl saying her hair being damaged doesn't make her any less human and that stuck with me for years.
UA-cam recommended this video at the perfect time
Omg you’re so spot on! I’ve recently decided to be a straight natural. The tangles and matting were out of control 😩
Rightt! It got to a point where I was thinking Damnn I’m detangling AGAIN?🤣🤣
Wow thank you for adding this! Because it’s so true not all textured hair will react the same!xxx
I am a blowdried/heat trained natural, and I agree with everything in this video. 🥰
I definitely want to try blowout styles too! Do you blowout straight or?xx
@@naturalnadinee I do silk presses every now and then as well! I love heat stretching my hair. 🤗
Wash and goes are the devil for my hair! I experience so much breakage doing wash and goes

My Amazon carts has delivered and I now have everything to do it myself, including a professional pair of shears❤
One question, do you still use the round brush to blow dry?
Soo good that you’re still able to wear wash n go’s as well! My curl pattern is too funky 🤣🤣
You’re explaining my whole life omg 😭😭 I’m going back to straight hair
Do it girl! It’s great on this side xx
The sebum coating is top tier! I have yet to experience dryness because the hair brush helps the sebum travel
It really is, nothing beats hairs own oils xx

Great video/information. I find that my hair retains its length by wearing box braids without extensions. What a game changer!! Wish I had done this back in 2020 instead of going back to the relaxer (huge mistake). It has grown faster since January 2024 than in the past 4 years.
I'm definitely finding this to be true. And putting the Bambu product over my DC before adding a heat cap, wow what a difference! My hair came out so silky and has stayed so moisturized even though using heat.

I know I'm months late, but thank you for this video.
Wow girl just wow. It took me yrs to grow my hair and its currently the same length as yours.
The logic of the sebum travel makes a lot of sense, and i believe its thesame logic as when you get a trim. Sebum travels faster and covers the entire strands
Yes trims help with this too so beneficial zz
I was just thinking my hair would probably flourish more when it’s stretched. Especially since it’s so fine and tangles so easily
I am definitely interested in being a straight hair natural because my hair retains length when it is straight. I need to find a good regimen and hair products. Thank you for sharing your methods and experiences.
Thank you, hope your hair journey goes well xxx
I just learned this about my hair last week. After having to chop off about 4 inches. Every summer I try to do more protective styles like wigs or ponytails with my natural curls. But it damages my hair every time. I am trying to avoid heat so my hair is not damaged, and in the mean time trying to keep up with natural hair does worst damage . I just have this idea that heat is really bad. Even though my hair is it’s healthiest when I straighten and wash and condition on bi weekly basis. Plus go and get my hair professionally trimmed and a treatment every month. Anyways straight natural hair for life lol. And I am so excited to see the growth now
Great video. I like the Tymo heat brush and heat protectant. Heat can be very beneficial. I never listened to the naysayers.

Thank you my hair is the best its ever been atm! cant wait to see the progress on going and I havent changed my routine since my last video xx
Smoothing the hair been a game changer for me too!x
Whoa, this is so true when I was younger my mom relaxed my hair when I was five my hair was long and it had length. But fast forward i kept straightening my hair day after day until my hair was damaged. And my hair wouldn't grow. So i cut it and now I am suffering from protein overload 👍🏾

shredded, i was really surprised that i still have shoulder lenght hair...i am not good with maintaing my natural 4c hair; i probably stick with silk press for a while once a month and trims. L 😂L!
Ohh at least the twists are low manipulation! But yeah I guess similar principle hope you liked your silk press 👀

@@jdbailey442 thankyou for the advice
@@naturalnadinee Thankyou! The struggle is real
Look into protein overload. If it’s dull, dry, and your hair feels like straw then it could protein overload.
Thank you so much for your content, you’ve inspired and empowered with so much information . Keep it up ❤️❤️❤️ you are beautiful
Thank you so much girl!🥺🤍
I’m starting to see that while I love wearing my hair natural, I get crazy single strand knots. I don’t even want to wear it natural without blowing it out because I’m scared of SSKs, they’re crazy. The last trim I did was mainly SSKs. My straight hair uses a lot less product too, just a bit of oil.
Hello Nadine! Your hair is amazing! I have some questions for you if you don’t mind, I’m kinda new to this straight natural stuff and I was wondering
how long have you been a straight natural?
@@Neesha242 thank you!!
How do you wrap your hair at night? What do you typically do? I’d love to see a video about that.
yes i switch up how i wrap my hair but always protect it at night for longevity xxx
i really need to do a routine because i have 4b fine hair and im about to cut it because it feels like its not growing and i tried being curly natural and it just was more work so I'll definitely be trying these tips
I finally found a way to keep my hair straight in hot humid weather (unless I’m in a beach town on the east coast). 😩
Anyone live in a beach town on the east coast? How do you keep your hair straight? Is it possible? If so, please share tips.
My hair draws from the ocean and goes wild and crazy.
Omg if you’ve nailed humidity that is such a bonus! I never really thought of the ocean water that’s just made me think! I live in gloomy UK so I don’t have this problem :( xxx
You need a humidity fighting serum! Look online for the best reviews
I love this. This is true for me. Although my hair is not straightened. I'm trying to decide to relax or Brazilian blowout. Idk 🤷♀️.
Both will damage your hair overtime.
I think wearing my hair pressed and curled is helping me retain more length. I don’t manipulate it as much.
This why I permed my hair but I stretch the perm and don’t hard perm my hair.
I've been wondering why. Because even if i blowdry my hair and keep it moisturized it grows so much quicker
Yep works the same principle stretched hair grows so much better!xx
I brush my hair everyday in a silk press. But I don’t use heat between silk presses. Is brushing my hair everyday breaking my hair hair off and not retaining length
Hi there! This is the very first video I saw on your channel. I just recently became a straight hair natural.
I have a question…..do you know if the sebum can still travel down the strands if I wear it in a protective style like flat twists? I’m curious because I was wondering if I had to wear it like yours here in the video🤔
Beautiful what is your hair porosity love love your hair 😍
Thank you! & high xx
Me to is high but fine will also try thanks 😊
Very very pretty girl!!
Thank you so much!🥺x
What products do you use to moisturize your hair when it’s suppressed?
hey girl i Oil my hair with my oil mixture i made a video on this a few weeks back xx
My issue is my hair doesn't stay straight.
i have locs. i’ve been thinking about combing them out to do this. do you think that’ll be more effective for hair growth or just leave my locs in?
Deffo Locs in! Unless you’re ready for a change Locs are a good way of maintaining hair minimally and retain length xxx
@@naturalnadinee thank you so much! 💜
How often were you trimming when you started straight natural journey ?
Humid weather helps. Dry weather breaks hair.
Great video! ❤❤❤
Thank you!xx
How often do you wash and straighten?
Every 3 weeks xx
Thank you for info.🤗
You’re welcome!🤍
I want to be a straight hair natural but I can’t keep it straight during or after I workout. Do you have any suggestions?
Hey girl try sweatbands , 2 ponytails and also blow dry your hair immediately after workout to prevent reversion xx
@@naturalnadinee Thanks. I’ll try it next time I silk press.
Do you hv a video for the press routine?
Have you seen the lab muffin beauty science short on how brushing your hair while it’s wet is more beneficial for curly hair? Thanks in advance, I enjoy your content
Yes! And I love lab muffin and it’s definitely beneficial that’s why every curly girl brushes their hair when it’s wet, makes it easier more manageable the style is better etc but still doesn’t change the fragility of the hair when wet xx
Ok so my hair is dry once it is straightened! What am I doing wrong? Also, I’m just starting Str8 hair and my roots! Whew chile
Oh never heard of it! but I would never put relaxer in my hair ever again xxx
@naturalnadinee your hair is beautiful natural! Glad you didn't fall for the relaxer nonsense 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿❤❤❤❤❤
I literally just stumbled upon your content and while I'm not interested in being a straight hair natural because I really love my natural curls
I admire the black women who are wearing their hair straight yet it is still relaxer free
If I ever do decide to wear my natural hair straight you are definitely one I would follow
Thanks for the content💗💕🌼🌼
@@tabbyb3514 than you so much girl🥺 I love the versatility of our hair it really is that gworl! But yeah I’m a serial relaxer hater, in this day there’s no need and I can always spot relaxed hair from a mile a way even if it’s healthy, not for me xxx
@@naturalnadinee 💕🌼💗😘😘
How do you moisturise straight hair ?
How do you maintain it while sleep?
I wrap my hair x
I tried blowing drying for streched styling but my hair just always looks dry after.
Yeah blowouts don’t really work for me either 😩 but I want to try doing a twist/braid out on blow dried hair x
The steps you take before blow drying play a big role in the blowout retaining that moisture. Maybe you're in need of a better moisture routine!
Hello Nadine😊,,great video and beautiful hair. Would love to have straight hair but the hot weather will approach,,,will you silk press in the summer ??
Hey girl thank you! & yess I will be xx
Yessss okay,,,im definitely intrigued 🤔 My hair is about chin length,,do you think it possible to keep it straight that short in the hot weather (Texas)
@@SheebaRenae tbh in Texas weather unless you do a keratin treatment or your hair is really heat trained your hair probably won’t last as long 😩 but it’s definitely worth a shot to see how your hair takes to it xx
I’m in Houston and yes it gets humid & hot!! I think I’ll do blown out styles and save the flat iron when it more cool. I’m devising a 2024 plan with how I’m going to wear my hair. Thinking it out as I foresee the environmental road blocks
@@MizzBFlyeI'm in Houston too and I plan on keeping it stretched too. Right now I have Mini twist. I just came out of a 3 week old silk press because we are already hitting high 80's this week.
What do you do during the summer though?
Wear it straight I was straight all last summer no issues z
Hii, I love your channel! Can you do a comparison between Olaplex no.0 or no.3 and the K18 repair hair mask? 😊
Do you live in a humid environment?
Nope I’m lucky in that sense! Rain is more a problem but even then
Yes, that is a very important question! I live in deep south GA so wouldn't work for me
@@lisag6416 without a keratin treatment it would be almost impossible but there are ways to be a straight hair natural in humid climates too xx
I would love to see a video on how to preserve str8 hair styles in humid and rainy climates.
@@STP255 Me too
Straight and wavy hair is weak when it’s wet.
Less manipulation!
me too. it grows way faster when i straighten it. i assume its because the heat from the iron stimulates blood.
Thank you for sharing! You are so beautiful and you have such a beautiful spirit and expression. Jesus loves you!
Aww thank you so much girll he loves you too! & I LOVE JESUS!❤️
I have strand knots. It's so irritating
They are the worst :( but its kind of inevitable with coily hair so dont beat yourself up over them!xx
What brands would you recommend?
Wow thanks guys for all the tips! I work out too and only did one ponytail and sweat band so definitely going to try the 2 ponytails!xx
Thank you all for the tips!! I am going to try the 2 ponytails with the sweatband. Pray for me!! 😁🙏🏾😁🙏🏾😁🙏🏾
