It worries me knowing that fewer and old family makes this only make this culturally significant food, but after hearing they’re from Crete. Crete holds long longevity of older people yet they need to refrain in working.
I a case like this, I kinda see it more as being “stubborn” rather than “tradition” Handmade =/= Tradition. They are fully aware that their only real source of income is tourism, and that making their product itself would never survive on it’s own simply because a more effective production method had been discovered. Compare this technique to “hand rolling it out” before the throwing technique they used to hand roll out the middle, but it took much longer to accomplish than the throwing technique. You can say that the hand rolling was tradition, and culturally significant, but was replaced when a better technique was discovered.
The thing is, the traditional handmade is not necessarily better than the industrial approach. A master can feed a street, a factory can feed a country. Many of the processes involved can be boosted by an industrial engineer, with little to no loss to quality. He could be doing a demo version while having a small production facility to produce for larger distribution.
@SaltedCuredBovineSticks LLC But why do we need the outdated methods to still be in use? I completely agree that it's important to preserve culture, but this video right here is forever cementing this man and his families culture and ancestry. Not only that, but it has been broadcasted to 750,000 people, way more than it would be otherwise. Making the food industrially keeps the market and traditional food alive, and making videos, books, movies, or museums help to keep the culture of making it alive.
The government should help business with long traditions like this.. advertise it on their tourist brocheours is a big helo besides more tourist to the country is also a profit for the government.

This is the type of food that should be sold at a reasonably higher price,, like look at that effort
Actually I couldn't agree more!
This type of food or when a man/woman puts their everything in what they do so they can support their family or because they love it..,should have an equal pay at least! Though in greece,(and I believe in many other countries) hard work never counts except if the job you are doing is for the government or if you own a very famous local or tourist shop, etc. Even then it may change your life only a little but... Fishermen, Bakers, small shop owners and many more, even if they put their hardest on their work..sadly they never go high and many times end up broke and in many depts... That's the sad reality..
"He's one of the FEW bakers who still makes it manually". Now it's mass-produced. That's why they themselves sell it to tourists at a higher price and all profits go back to them.

It worries me knowing that fewer and old family makes this only make this culturally significant food, but after hearing they’re from Crete. Crete holds long longevity of older people yet they need to refrain in working.
Totally, the loss of culture is a big issue - I even see it in the US, and we are usually the ones destroying culture
I a case like this, I kinda see it more as being “stubborn” rather than “tradition”
Handmade =/= Tradition.
My family still makes it homemade 🙂
It helps them, there are a lot of programs helping such businesses. The problem in Greece is that the money never rich the right people.

No machine can turn phyllo as well as a master’s hands.
No, but they do it for a tenth of the price and the average sheep can't tell the difference.
@@EyeTry203 this is how we may go into a dark age again.
They can. I'm not saying they are good, but they definitely can
Forgetting skills and trades and reling on machines.
We need artisans like him to continue so the trade .
Agreed
When i become rich, i would rather fund these old traditions than new age technology. We can’t afford to lose it.
If* u become rich
Honestly tho me too man
Thats why you wont ever be rich.
Do both, new age technology and old traditions are both important to society
im rooting for you to do that ryan!
No, you won't
This is in my town Rethymno. I always go to them to buy Phyllo, baklava, kadaifi etc. they are really nice people. When i told Giorgos about this video, he got happy and wanted me to stay more and chat. Lovely people
When his voice broke I almost cried. Darn this black but easily moved heart.
Edit: to the people who said I made them cringe because of this comment, no i didn’t say this to be ‘lol quirky’, what i meant was ‘im already dead inside but whenever i see old people they remind me of my dead grandparents that I can’t help but cry.’ So to those who defended me in the comments, i thank u. To those who chose to bully me without knowing anything, I hope u come to ur senses.
haha, me too

I agree on the black and easy part.
I really respect the people who keep the tradition alive. I hope that I can visit this store one day.
How do you have such great hair?
@XT Not funny.
@XT Ok, baldy.
@XT i knew a guy who had a vial of whale sperm and some other nonsense in there that he would wipe on his face and say it was good for his skin whatever helps right?
Why didn't Business Insider provide a link to support or donate to this family?
Because this family is not a beggar.
@@chrismichalop9361 if your family business is struggling to stay afloat, begging isn't a term you would use to save your livelihood. You sir, are an idiot.
@@NotSimonL Sir, read my comment again, please. Thanks.
@@chrismichalop9361 yeah I get what you're trying to say but helping another person in a time of need shouldn't be looked at as some sort of dishonor. Your logic is badly outdated.
Seems like this family earning decent money.
These videos always make me cry, there's so much that goes into crafts like these, it becomes a labor of love. It's sad to see traditions like these disappear from cultures because of mass production.

"How do we show that this guy is a engineer?"
"I dunno, just have him measure a random doorway."
That’s hilarious!

He does it so that the tourists can see, this man is a real one . Sad to see that handmade things are getting less and less popular
Actually quite the opposite. Handmade items are quite popular today. Just look at Etsy as one example. About 85% of their items are handmade by sellers. And Etsy is huge.
@@monot00nz yes but handmade pastries aren't as lucky. One of my local chinatown bakeries had to switch to chinese food and get rid of all their chinese pastries just to survive. And thats just one example of local favorites of mine that has disappeared over the years here in la

I've lived in rethymno my entire life I remember when I was a kid I used to play around the streets where the store is and god damn it i still remember how amazing was watching that guy show off his amazing skills to us the youngsters after so many years I'm proud of him and so happy that he's doing well !
Lucky you!
I once lived in Platanias, which is just next to Rethymno, but I went to the city to eat out. To Fournaki is still the best place I've ever ate a pizza in my life.
Many respects to these people who are still fighting for life with tradition and love to what they do!!
Industrialization has robbed many of their livelihood across the globe. The quality is something machines cannot bring in. It makes a huge difference between hand made and machine made.. Prayers that their business flourishes.. Thank you for sharing this video
