Yeah the wastegate pipe to the back, we used to be able to have external ones but now has to have its own exhaust system with bends etc and be within the noise limit, otherwise have to be routed back into the exhaust system

He used to have a shop in Far North QLD 😎 RotarMax was the very first 20B PP turbo engine I'd ever seen! This was when I first got into Rotaries in 2003-2004. That 20B RotarMax built was in a jet black Cosmo and he had adapted power valves from several 2 stroke motocross bikes. This friggin blew my mind that he could get such crazy big PP to run seemingly like an extended port? But when he opened the thing up I swear the pops between gearshifts sounded like sonic booms!!! Oh and yeah he had like this big 5" pipe exhaust out the back of the car but sticking out more than a foot long almost bozazoku style 🤪 Me being totally new to rotaries had just bought a FC RX7 and I was oblivious to the extent a rotary could be modified? Nobody was really doing PP turbos much back then......well more specifically nobody was really doing street driven PP turbo much? I rock up so naive and made fun of the big ugly exhaust sticking out the back of this spaceship looking luxury car? I'm like Dafuq is this crazy thing with a ricer cannon poking out literally like a cannon barrel how stupid. Yep put my foot in my mouth big time 'oh James his is Max and that's his Cosmo😉' Next stupid question had to follow "what? Is that thing a rotary? Nah surely not?" Yup embarrassing hahaha. Then Ken (my mate that introduced me) goes "and now you're gonna find out what that stupid exhaust is for" Followed by frustrated tones "fucken thing! I'm not waiting months for another bumper to turn up from Japan again, so that thing can fucken stay on there! I don't care how ugly it looks.......oh and its still bubbling the paint but I can't go any longer or its just gonna look to crazy? Nah it's fine..... I'll just respray as needed" I was a little taken back in shock thinking he was exaggerating to get a reaction and then he reaches in and fires the thing up and I nearly jumped through the roof 🤣 I was not expecting the sound and smell of a friggin race bike either? I don't think he could physically fit anymore mufflers under the Cosmo; and the thing was reverberating the tin roof of the entire workshop! Throw in a gilmer drive and then came my next naive question "is that a supercharger?" I got laughed at a lot that day. Exhaust cutouts or variable exhausts are Illegal in NZ bro. I never had them in NZ, I have a Varex variable muffler on my FD in Aus but have blown up 2 of them🤣
