Favorite amp I own! Got it last year for $400 after Josh Middleton of Sylosis did a video on one. This amp feels like it sits comfortably between a dual rec and a 5150, best of both worlds. This is definitely one of the best amps for thrash and hard core, specially on a budget, but watch out! Everyone is catching on! In just a years time they have jumped from the $400 range up to around the $6-700 range. I’m running mine with the JJ KT77’s. On a side note, you can get into full Mesa territory with it with a little eq trick, roll off the bass and put an eq pedal in the fx loop, add a little bass back on the pedal.
@@davesmith4757 I don’t think it needs to be modded. I bought it this way, but from what I’ve read KT77s work in el34, so just make sure you have the bias switched to el34.
I've had my Triple XXX for 20 years. Seems like every live show that I played with it, other guitarist would ask to see my rig after sound check. Now thats killer tone🤘
I wanted triple xxx for the longest because of gary holt, had a hard time finding someone willing to ship out to California last year I ended up getting a 3120 and that amp kills I'm thinking about tossing in some kt77 or e34l tubes and now I'm looking for a vtm 120 and ultra plus thanks to your vids kyle peavy rules🤘
Recently came across your channel while searching for Peavey videos. The XXX is insane. Waaaayy more gain than I'll ever need, I usually keep it on 2 or 3. And thank you for also getting rid of the ridiculous faceplate.
would love to see this shot-out with a 5150. I own the XXX and it sounds remarkably similar. I've also wondered how it compares to the JSX, I've heard the ultra channel on the JSX is based on the XXX crunch and they put in a different sound for the crunch which seems like a nice change -- I find the ultra channel a bit redundant, it's like the XXX has two really high gain ("lead") channels and the crunch is (to me) the better of those two. The only realy criticism of the amp i have is that it basically has two lead channels and a clean, it could use a bona-fide crunch channel. As it is, I stay on the crunch channel with the gain at about 9:00 (that's already a ton esp with actives) and when I want a genuine "crunch" sound I just dial back the guitar volume.
Lil known fact when you're on the crunch channel the vol knob of the ultra channel becomes the presence knob. Same thing when you're on the ultra channel the vol knob on the crunch becomes the presence knob.
After selling my Engl Powerball and being without an amp for years and years this was the first amp I bought. Obviously mine sounds quite different (having just seen your UA-cam review video I totally get why) but I definitely love it
I have a Boss MS-3 with an MXR/CAE MC401 in L1 and a MXR M77 like yours in L2 (4CM in L3). The MS-3 changes channels as well. I find it really useful for setting up patches to have the choice of two boosts that are selected with a patch change. I have built 7-pin DIN > TRS adapter cables for both this series (XXX/JSX) and the three-button 5150 series (5150 II/65905+/6534+) amps as well, they just use a different wire for the channel change, clean on these is the same wire as crunch on the 6534+ etc, but you can buy them if you find that easier/cheaper than building your own from the old cable, some shrink tube, and a female TRS jack (you send the effects switch to ground so that the effects loop is always-on).
My favorite amp, 5751 is a good choice for V2. I would strongly suggest trying KT77's and do the choke mod. I've owned 3 of them myself and the changes I spoke of is the best version of it! Chunk city!
My first tube amp was the Triple X . Ended up selling it and regretting it ever since. Peavey to me always had the best high gain tone for HC and metal. 🤘🏼🤘🏼

Awesome video bro. I revisited because someone told me I have to understand the active equalization on my new (used) 333 that I bought yesterday, and told me it's a clone of this Peavey Triple X. Thanks bro. Very useful.
Actually you can also use the other eq of the opposite channel to change the tone sound more. For example if you are on the crunch channel, the eq knobs can change the tone on the crunch as well. You can even mess with the clean to change the tone on the crunch as well. And vice versa on the ultra. I hope that makes sense
If you are using all three channels I think the best idea is to set up a good rhythm tone on the Crunch channel and then EQ the Ultra channel to work well for solos. You generally run a wet tone for solos anyway - some analog delay at least, maybe reverb - so that also knocks off some top end (unless you are using a digital delay with no tone control on it).

My peavey xxx has been out of commission since 2014 due to a blown output transformer. Videos like these make me wanna open it up and fix it. Its such a beast of an amp and has a unique voicing ive been unable to replicate with other amps.
Picked up the early "block letter version" last week in absolute brand new condition for under $300. Currently waiting on new tubes, screen resistors, caps and a choke to get here 🤘🏻
@@rickfennell7849 I used Genalex Gold Lion KT77's with 3 JJ-ECC83G's and a JAN 5751 in V1. A choke is a electrical inductor, which is used to smooth out (filter) AC ripple...adding one in place of the factory resistor makes the amp a little more responsive and less noisy.
Classic story: The first TripleX I bought (first run) I returned because of that volume issue, I thought it was defected, got a 2nd, it did the same thing. Sold it, hated that amp with a passion for YEARS, 10-12 years of hatred. Bought one for 150-175 bucks on a whim, used it for a year for live shows and ended up loving it because it sounded so great in a "live band mix'. Sold it a few years bac, but now I've got me the 60 watt 1x12 combo version. The bottom end isn't as boomy from what I remember of the 120 version, but I think it's time for a cap change.
The lows can get out of control if not balanced with the other EQ dials for sure. The active EQ can sometimes make it difficult, but the tone is def in there!
Ah yes Glad to see this video, I have owned two, still own my second. Replaced screen grid resistors to accommodate the EL34’s bias. I like the crunch channel as well. Sounds like yours needs a good pot cleaning...
What Kyle said haha If you don't already have it, buy an Ultra Plus if you can find one. I have one and I love it. I love the fact that you have a half power switch and a damping switch both in front of the amp instead of being in the back and a boost button on both the crunch and lead channels(not footswitchable though). Personally, I think you have more bang for your buck and it sounds great imo.
Former Peavey employee here. Kyle is 100% correct. It’s a bit confusing, but the 3120 is the XXX rebadged(3 channels, 120 watts) and the XXXII is actually the rebranded JSX. The JSX was an XXX that was tweaked to fit Joe Satriani’s needs, so it was basically the second version of the XXX, so the name technically makes sense, but I find it a bit misleading personally

I have the 5751 in V2 and V1 but I am thinking of reverting to the ECC83S in V1 because just the one 5751 in V2 seemed to give more difference between the Rhythm (Crunch) and Lead (Ultra) channels on my 3120 (updated Triple XXX).
I picked one up about a year ago for $300. My buddy told me that the Ultra/Crunch channel are “linked” when you change channels it just throws different cap values on it so I believe that’s why the settings bleed into each other. Either way it’s a killer amp, I clipped some caps out of mine to tame the gain a lot
Very cool. I remember almost buying one of these in mid 2000’s.. I was primarily a rhythm player back then, would have been perfect for me at that time. Got something else instead, dont remember what. Cool review man!
If you put a 12at7 in v1 and a 5751 in the phase inverter, it really cleans up all the fizz and the gain sounds and feels more "usable". It's a simple yet effective way to get this amp sounding even better. I also put el34s in mine and it really made the mids come alive and it's just super thrashy. Though with the 6l6, it has a certain low end "umph" a certain tight punchy low end that sounds heavenly through the oversized mesa cabs. This was my first tube amp, got for 400 bucks and I will never get rid of it
I prefer just a 5751 in v2 as I feel the 12AT7 removes a bit too much gain in either V1 or V2, but that's just my personal taste. I definitely understand the purpose of what you do though, and it's a nice way to smooth out these sometimes oversaturated old Peavey amps!

This sounds awesome! I never hear much about this amp. Bassist turned guitarist. First amp was the peavey 6505+112. Wanted the Randall Satan as my 2nd amp but Guitar Center really yank my chain. Looked around at a bunch of other shit and settled with the kemper. Used that thru the effects loop of the 6505. Bought a bunch of profiles and found a XXX profile from Choptones. This blows ALL of the other profiles away, its such a chug fest, palm mutes are killer. Kinda was getting tired of the Kemper, so saved my money and got the Savage MK2 with a 2x12 engl cab... Now I'm in heaven.
Crunch channel is best on this amp. Other ultra series models have it as ultra channel. XXXs ultra channel is voiced for solos. This was my best peavey amp until I tried JSX. JSX has everything what XXX except channel for solos. Plus it has more features as fat switch and separate presence and resonance knobs. Best of the best.
My fav metal amp...sure bogner and vht are sick but like 3k more. Its the best Peavey amp...unsung hero. The 5150 is a bit too low end heavy, the xxx is perfect tight punch. Great to see that you're giving it the props it deserves. Great job on the video!

Insane chunk on this amp. I've always had a slight curiosity when it comes to Peavey. Not quite Mesa thick, not Marshall teeth. Peavey is like the good ole stand by just plug in and have a good time. I bet some Carcass Heartwork would sound ludicrous on this amp.

Hi Kyle, I boughts a Triple XXX 2 days ago. I'd like to ask you a couple of things. Do you know how is biased the Triple XXX? Cool like the 6505+ or a little bit hotter like the 6505? I'm struggling with volumes, it seems like the amp has less power than a 5150, obviously the 5150 doesn't have a channel volume and a master, so it's like on full power all the time. Now I have the send on max and return on 0. Thanks alot, this video is the reason why I bought the amp. 🙂 (P.S. It seems this amp prefer rear loaded cabinet as well)
Sounds much better than a Marshall, Mesa or Blackstar IMO, way meaner and much beefier, I love my Peavey's also, if I see one of these bastards for sale in my area I'm gonna snatch that fker up real quick! Great demo and what a monster of an amp!
I've owned transtube XXL amp, the SS version of this beast and always wanted a buy this bud they are nowdays rare and super expensive so might just buy bugera 333 infinium instead if its sound's enything like this amp its worth of money?
Trying to figure out how to get mine to sound like this. Wow. Mine sounds like a cheap distortion peddle through a cheap amp. No "chug" with the gain at all? I started playing again this year after a 15 year absence but even back when it was new it was only ok sounding, no punch though. Sonic Maximizer kinda helps though.

I wanna get it sounding good because I haven't been happy with these digital amps out these days with Blacksun maybe being the only exception. I don't know much about tubes and other things, but with a lot of the knobs I get a lot of extra noise and weirdness as well. But yeah gotta bring it in for sure. Also, since it's a 212, thinking of cutting it up and making a separate head/cab. But still, I see you playing "lower" amps and they sound even better. Like the XXL video totally sounds significantly better than my XXX.

I was told by robert from Roberts guitar dungeon that i should hook my guitar into my tuner into my ts9dx into my boss ns2 noise suppressor into front of my amp. I have a peavey 6505mh and a mesa 2×12 cab. Is the into front of my amp the best method? It does sound great im happy with my tone but just want to know the best method
Robert from Roberts guitar dungeon was super helpful with giving me detailed instruction on my signle path and it works great i just dont see you plugged into front of your amps so im curious cuz u have awesome tone (probly much better then mine). Hey man! Robert is correct! You can also put your overdrive into the loop of the ns2 for better gating but the way Robert described is how I used mine for years! Never run an overdrive into the loop, unless you have a clean boost and you're looking for a volume boost when you kick it on. Thanks for the sub my friend

Congrats man! The XXX is killer! Also, for the faceplate. I removed the trucker gal metal piece, the black wooden board was behind it. The grate piece is from the back of a 6505

Can anyone tell about my old peavey XXL212 100wt I picked up not much on utube about it. Seems to be mostly a liked amp. I know it sells as a head also I have been useing my fender 15wt frontman for the last 20 years lol. I just play on my own so know nothing of good amps.
Bro...The XXL is SICK! Its voiced pretty much like Triple XXX but its solid state so no need for tubes. Its like 90% there as far as making the same sounds as a Triple XXX... VERY sick amp. I would love to own one.

Couldn’t have told you what it was but there was just something “missing” to my ears. Now this was late 90’s early 2000’s before I had ever played through any tube amp. The very first chord I struck while checking out my very first tube amp and immediately knew what it was that I was missing and why tube amps were so popular. Been nothing but glass since 🤘

@@riokinsey2134 As a generality the Uber is an extremely pissed off Marshall type platform. This amp steers more towards the other side of the pond type tonez. Like Mesa, Soldano etc
Great channel, but .. While I LOVE the metal tones & seeing how well they chug & how heavy they sound ........ it would be good imo to also not just play Thrash style only. Im sayin it sounds good but how do some chords ring out, how do some sustaining leads sound, etc. Not complaining, itys just almost every video you get the amp sounding killer & play thrash style & then the video ends. all good though

Kyle has a 3120 to sell(that’s what I have too, which is a rebadged XXX with EL34) for 650$ and I’d say go for it ;) I owned a shit ton of amps over the last 20 years and it’s still one of my favourite. I play with my 3120 all the time! For punk/metal/post hardcore, I think the Ultra line in general is the best bang for your buck. I love the clean channel too when I play more ambient stuff. I run mine with a 5751 in v2 and KT77 in the power section. It roars! Haha

If you turn the effects loop return send all the way up it boost the volume basically you can hit the loop button on the foot switch for a boost

I never use the Ultra channel for rhythm. I use it strictly as a high gain lead channel.
I think I saw this amp float through the RT classifieds at one point. The modified front grill looks much better than the stock. Amp sounds great.

My peavey xxx has been out of commission since 2014 due to a blown output transformer. Videos like these make me wanna open it up and fix it. Its such a beast of an amp and has a unique voicing ive been unable to replicate with other amps.

Picked up the early "block letter version" last week in absolute brand new condition for under $300. Currently waiting on new tubes, screen resistors, caps and a choke to get here 🤘🏻

@@rickfennell7849 I used Genalex Gold Lion KT77's with 3 JJ-ECC83G's and a JAN 5751 in V1. A choke is a electrical inductor, which is used to smooth out (filter) AC ripple...adding one in place of the factory resistor makes the amp a little more responsive and less noisy.

Classic story: The first TripleX I bought (first run) I returned because of that volume issue, I thought it was defected, got a 2nd, it did the same thing. Sold it, hated that amp with a passion for YEARS, 10-12 years of hatred. Bought one for 150-175 bucks on a whim, used it for a year for live shows and ended up loving it because it sounded so great in a "live band mix'. Sold it a few years bac, but now I've got me the 60 watt 1x12 combo version. The bottom end isn't as boomy from what I remember of the 120 version, but I think it's time for a cap change.
The lows can get out of control if not balanced with the other EQ dials for sure. The active EQ can sometimes make it difficult, but the tone is def in there!

Ah yes Glad to see this video, I have owned two, still own my second. Replaced screen grid resistors to accommodate the EL34’s bias. I like the crunch channel as well. Sounds like yours needs a good pot cleaning...
This or a 3120 and a Ultra Plus are all I need for my peavey trinity.
3120 is the same amp, just rebadged and shipped with EL34's, so you really just need the Ultra Plus!
What Kyle said haha If you don't already have it, buy an Ultra Plus if you can find one. I have one and I love it. I love the fact that you have a half power switch and a damping switch both in front of the amp instead of being in the back and a boost button on both the crunch and lead channels(not footswitchable though). Personally, I think you have more bang for your buck and it sounds great imo.
Former Peavey employee here. Kyle is 100% correct. It’s a bit confusing, but the 3120 is the XXX rebadged(3 channels, 120 watts) and the XXXII is actually the rebranded JSX. The JSX was an XXX that was tweaked to fit Joe Satriani’s needs, so it was basically the second version of the XXX, so the name technically makes sense, but I find it a bit misleading personally
. Im getting the 2x12 combo xxx. I need tht crunch especially for picking up my low notes on my seven string when chugging. Thanks for this vid super helpful in pulling the trigger.

I have the 5751 in V2 and V1 but I am thinking of reverting to the ECC83S in V1 because just the one 5751 in V2 seemed to give more difference between the Rhythm (Crunch) and Lead (Ultra) channels on my 3120 (updated Triple XXX).

I picked one up about a year ago for $300. My buddy told me that the Ultra/Crunch channel are “linked” when you change channels it just throws different cap values on it so I believe that’s why the settings bleed into each other. Either way it’s a killer amp, I clipped some caps out of mine to tame the gain a lot

If you put a 12at7 in v1 and a 5751 in the phase inverter, it really cleans up all the fizz and the gain sounds and feels more "usable". It's a simple yet effective way to get this amp sounding even better. I also put el34s in mine and it really made the mids come alive and it's just super thrashy. Though with the 6l6, it has a certain low end "umph" a certain tight punchy low end that sounds heavenly through the oversized mesa cabs. This was my first tube amp, got for 400 bucks and I will never get rid of it
I prefer just a 5751 in v2 as I feel the 12AT7 removes a bit too much gain in either V1 or V2, but that's just my personal taste. I definitely understand the purpose of what you do though, and it's a nice way to smooth out these sometimes oversaturated old Peavey amps!

This sounds awesome! I never hear much about this amp. Bassist turned guitarist. First amp was the peavey 6505+112. Wanted the Randall Satan as my 2nd amp but Guitar Center really yank my chain. Looked around at a bunch of other shit and settled with the kemper. Used that thru the effects loop of the 6505. Bought a bunch of profiles and found a XXX profile from Choptones. This blows ALL of the other profiles away, its such a chug fest, palm mutes are killer. Kinda was getting tired of the Kemper, so saved my money and got the Savage MK2 with a 2x12 engl cab... Now I'm in heaven.

Crunch channel is best on this amp. Other ultra series models have it as ultra channel. XXXs ultra channel is voiced for solos. This was my best peavey amp until I tried JSX. JSX has everything what XXX except channel for solos. Plus it has more features as fat switch and separate presence and resonance knobs. Best of the best.

Yes! I prefer KT77 in the power section and a 5751 preamp tube in V2 to tame the fizzy gain a tad. This rounds the mids out a little bit. Great combo!

Insane chunk on this amp. I've always had a slight curiosity when it comes to Peavey. Not quite Mesa thick, not Marshall teeth. Peavey is like the good ole stand by just plug in and have a good time.
I bet some Carcass Heartwork would sound ludicrous on this amp.
Carcass used 5150s to record the Heartwork album if I'm not mistaken.

Hi Kyle, I boughts a Triple XXX 2 days ago. I'd like to ask you a couple of things. Do you know how is biased the Triple XXX? Cool like the 6505+ or a little bit hotter like the 6505? I'm struggling with volumes, it seems like the amp has less power than a 5150, obviously the 5150 doesn't have a channel volume and a master, so it's like on full power all the time. Now I have the send on max and return on 0. Thanks alot, this video is the reason why I bought the amp. 🙂 (P.S. It seems this amp prefer rear loaded cabinet as well)
send and return both need to be maxed out, that's why you have no volume.
Sounds much better than a Marshall, Mesa or Blackstar IMO, way meaner and much beefier, I love my Peavey's also, if I see one of these bastards for sale in my area I'm gonna snatch that fker up real quick! Great demo and what a monster of an amp!

I've owned transtube XXL amp, the SS version of this beast and always wanted a buy this bud they are nowdays rare and super expensive so might just buy bugera 333 infinium instead if its sound's enything like this amp its worth of money?

Trying to figure out how to get mine to sound like this. Wow. Mine sounds like a cheap distortion peddle through a cheap amp. No "chug" with the gain at all? I started playing again this year after a 15 year absence but even back when it was new it was only ok sounding, no punch though. Sonic Maximizer kinda helps though.
Sounds like yours has an issue man, these amps have massive amounts of gain and a very punchy low end in their stock form! Time for a checkup

I wanna get it sounding good because I haven't been happy with these digital amps out these days with Blacksun maybe being the only exception. I don't know much about tubes and other things, but with a lot of the knobs I get a lot of extra noise and weirdness as well. But yeah gotta bring it in for sure. Also, since it's a 212, thinking of cutting it up and making a separate head/cab. But still, I see you playing "lower" amps and they sound even better. Like the XXL video totally sounds significantly better than my XXX.

Hi kyle love your videos. Just subscribed recently. Do u run your overdrives through your effects loop? I was told by robert from Roberts guitar dungeon that i should hook my guitar into my tuner into my ts9dx into my boss ns2 noise suppressor into front of my amp. I have a peavey 6505mh and a mesa 2×12 cab. Is the into front of my amp the best method? It does sound great im happy with my tone but just want to know the best method
Robert from Roberts guitar dungeon was super helpful with giving me detailed instruction on my signle path and it works great i just dont see you plugged into front of your amps so im curious cuz u have awesome tone (probly much better then mine). But yea bro id be so happy if u coukd answer this for me.
Hey man! Robert is correct! You can also put your overdrive into the loop of the ns2 for better gating but the way Robert described is how I used mine for years! Never run an overdrive into the loop, unless you have a clean boost and you're looking for a volume boost when you kick it on. Thanks for the sub my friend

They sound decent at low volumes but it's a big heavy and loud amp if you want it to be
something you didn't mention - the ultra channel volume knob affects the tone of the crunch channel (and vice versa)

I remember getting the resistors upgraded to run all EL34s and biased on the "Loose" mode which made it sound huge! I need to undust it!

It’s louder with the loose switch too! Also, try bias it colder, and then you can put that 12ax7 back in!
I sold my Triple XXX in 2007...regretted it ever since! Got another one at Christmas... I am whole again! Quick question: Did you do the faceplate mod yourself? If so, did you use an Ultra Faceplate? Love the channel! Keep up the awesome riffing!
Congrats man! The XXX is killer! Also, for the faceplate. I removed the trucker gal metal piece, the black wooden board was behind it. The grate piece is from the back of a 6505

It all depeneds on the design of the amp, no real rule of thumb there.

Bro...The XXL is SICK! Its voiced pretty much like Triple XXX but its solid state so no need for tubes. Its like 90% there as far as making the same sounds as a Triple XXX... VERY sick amp. I would love to own one.

Couldn’t have told you what it was but there was just something “missing” to my ears. Now this was late 90’s early 2000’s before I had ever played through any tube amp. The very first chord I struck while checking out my very first tube amp and immediately knew what it was that I was missing and why tube amps were so popular. Been nothing but glass since 🤘

I would say they both will get somewhat equally aggressive. But they’re gonna be 2 different sounding and feeling amps

Great channel, but .. While I LOVE the metal tones & seeing how well they chug & how heavy they sound ........ it would be good imo to also not just play Thrash style only. Im sayin it sounds good but how do some chords ring out, how do some sustaining leads sound, etc. Not complaining, itys just almost every video you get the amp sounding killer & play thrash style & then the video ends. all good though

Kyle has a 3120 to sell(that’s what I have too, which is a rebadged XXX with EL34) for 650$ and I’d say go for it ;) I owned a shit ton of amps over the last 20 years and it’s still one of my favourite. I play with my 3120 all the time! For punk/metal/post hardcore, I think the Ultra line in general is the best bang for your buck. I love the clean channel too when I play more ambient stuff. I run mine with a 5751 in v2 and KT77 in the power section. It roars! Haha
