Affecting your sleep, not effecting your sleep. Great video as always! Did you happen to stumble across Klonapin or Clonazepam?

Clonazepam is part of the "pams and the dones" that have a huge effect on EEG.
Gotcha on the affect/effect. Screwed it up in the title. Thanks for the heads up. (thought you were talking about the thumbnail at first.)

I've been taking Ambien for years and it's kind of neither here nor there at this point -- in other words I think I've built up a tolerance. I do have insomnia and apnea, a bad combination, because in doing some research and talking to my sleep doc, a lot of these medications further relax your throat, making sleep apnea worse. According to the stuff I've been looking at, two of the things that seem to be okay and not more damaging to apnea are, surprisingly, Ambien (whew!) but also L-tryptophan, which I didn't hear you mention (remember those Thanksgiving turkey-filled dinners?!), but is often used as a sleep aid too. Sorry if you did in fact mention it. I did try a very small piece of an edible one night. My sleep didn't improve, but my oxygen saturation level took a pretty deep dive and scared me. And I do sleep with a CPAP. Given the drop in S02, I am hesitant to use anything now that might worsen my apnea. Since I've been taking Ambien for so long, it's not making anything worse. Some studies say Ambien can actually help and some studies say it makes it worse. I don't know if any of this is of any use to you at all, but basically it seems that most of this stuff worsens apnea. What works for my friend who has insomnia might be detrimental to me instead of helping me.

Let me start by saying I know a fair amount about drugs, both the fun kind and the medical kind (Fun kind from College, medical kind after a bad doc screwed me up). You skipped one of the most prevalent classes of antidepressants, SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) such as Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, etc. Many if not most of the ones you covered are decades old with a couple exceptions. Heterocyclics, Tricyclics, MAOI's, those are meds from the 50's and not frequently used,.certainly not first line.
Also, you really killed the names of them.

I lucid dream most of the time (many times can steer the direction of my dreams) and am on no anti-depressants and never have been. I have had very vivid dreams every night of my life and CPAP has had no effect on my dreams.

I think just as important is drugs and their effects on apnoea especially Central sleep apnoea. It's well known that opiates cause CSA, in fact it's the life threatening effect not only in overdose of heroin but but Oxycontin, Vicodin, morphine, tramadol, Suboxone, Methadone and codiene to name a few. Not only are these known to cause CSA but any reduction or discontinuance can cause insomnia. I'm a chronic pain sufferer trying to work out which of these may be giving me my CSA. CPAP dealt with my OSA but I'm having 50-100 CSA events an hour which we are trying to get to the bottom of before trying BIPAP or AVS, I'm told the Pregabalin I'm also on may have some effect. The question I have is if given the choice, would I prefer further PAP intervention or quit/ lower my meds?

Honestly my favorite part about taking SSRIs is the vivid dreams I get from them. Moreso in the first couple months, but man. I'm talking epic adventure dreams. ...Although I WILL say on this latest round, my brain has been putting all my biggest triggers into my dreams, and it honestly feels like...well you know how some say dreaming is your brain's way of working out all the things that have happened to you? I feel like that's how escitalopram is working for me. It's like "Here, brain, since you won't do anything while awake, instead we're going to sift through all these Stress Files while the mainframe is asleep."
I think that drug makes me super tired during the day, though, and given that I'm ALREADY tired all the time, adding on is no bueno. At least I have the dreams, though...

If I was LegoMan’s comedy writer:
“I feel like this video drug on for a long time”
“All those drugs probably do improve sleep … in the people who manufacture and massively profit from them.”

I’m six weeks new to CPAP. I’ve been having a problem with CSA (my OSA is well controlled with the CPAP). I was able to get my CSA score down to the 20’s. Then I took my first Ajovy shot for migraine control and my CSA score has gone up into the 70’s. I’m going to get an in person sleep study and will likely get a different machine. But the Ajovy clearly made a difference in the CSA events.

I was on antidepressants/anti-anxiety medications for 20 years. I was always a lucid dreamer (incredibly vivid), but when I started CPAP in 2019, I didn't remember my dreams very often. CPAP did improve my sleep quality. Last November, I weaned myself off the psych meds. Now, I'm experiencing the behaviors I had before I started CPAP therapy, such as falling asleep while I watch TV after dinner. I have daytime fatigue. Using OSCAR, I've noticed a significant increase in RERAs (Respiratory Effort-Related Arousals). Another issue is that I have chronic bone pain from a car accident (decades ago), which affect my sleep. I feel lousy again. 😢

Modafinil isn't a stimulant. It kind of acts like one, but isn't chemically a stimulant. I don't understand the difference either, I just know I take it for chronic fatigue because nothing else helps. Also, stimulants affect people with ADHD differently. It's pretty common for people with ADHD to fall asleep as a result of consuming caffeine, because our brains get quiet and peaceful under stimulants! I think modafinil is different for ADHD too. It's a restricted drug because college kids sometimes use it to cram, because it gives them more focus. It doesn't have any effect on my mind though, which makes me wonder if it's the ADHD doing that. No drug has a universal effect, but the complete reversal of effect of stimulants on neurotypical vs. ADHD brains is pretty interesting.
EDIT: I've never been much of a dreamer, though as a kid before my health went in the toilet I would have brief "story" type dreams. Started SSRIs as a teen. For a long time in early adulthood, after chronic fatigue set in, I was either not dreaming at all or forgetting them so thoroughly that I felt like I didn't dream (I can also dream and know that I dreamed but not remember the content). At one point I changed which SSRI I take, and started having relatively normal dreams for a while. Nowadays I generally only have disjointed, vague, meaningless dreams. I've been on CPAP for several years but it didn't have much of an effect on my dreams. I have been diagnosed with insomnia but it isn't severe so I don't take anything for it other than melatonin. I very rarely lucid dream but when I do I immediately turn myself into a dragon and fly around a bit. It never lasts long, same as normal dreams.

The Lucid Dreaming I had from Melatonin was frightening. No idea if I slept better because the next day I had watch the news to be sure I didn't do anything that was in the dream. Never again!

I've been prescribed trazadone but it doesn't do anything for me. I was also prescribed tramadol to sleep but it cranks up my restless leg syndrome about 1000%.
This information may be why I fall asleep and wake up about 3 or 4 a.m. I tend to stay awake for a while but eventually fall back asleep on and off.

I didn’t notice if you mentioned Singulair / montelukast which is a drug often prescribed for asthma that also helps with some allergies. It seems to disturb my sleep, after several days on it there’s a noticeable increase in psychosis and paranoia for me, perhaps it also affects REM sleep in some way
I’m taking trazodone for insomnia at night and it seems to help with deep sleep, I’m not noticing any REM issues, but I’ve been taking it long term, so perhaps I’ve adjusted to it. My sleep psychologist also sent me a research paper showing that it increases deep sleep. I can post the details if anyone is interested

On antidepressants, and I almost never dream or if I do I almost never remember them. Prior to a different type of medicine I started this year, I had only ever remembered 8 dreams in my life and 3 of them are the same recurring and several of the remaining ones were before I started any antidepressants whatsoever, so very opposite to what you were hypothesizing with antidepressants and vivid or lucid dreams--basically no dreams on antidepressants for me.

Certain asthma meds affect my sleep if I use them at night: albuterol and budesonide. Prednisone always keeps me awake no matter what time I take it. Benadryl makes me sleepy but gives me a huge hangover.

I've been using Adrafinil for 10 years and it works great. It doesn't interfere with my sleep or raise my blood pressure or heart rate. Modafinil was a nightmare. Even half a dose kept me up for 18 hours. Lunesta gave me the best dreams I've ever had. Vivid, Technicolor, realistic. It was like 5-6 episodes of TV shows every night. They weren't weird nonsensical like I normally have. They made sense but were so vivid that they disturbed my sleep so i had to stop it. It also made my mouth taste like motor oil.

Dang. I thought a total lack of REM was essentially a death sentence. And some of those drugs actually anticipate that users will have no REM during use? How is that medically acceptable?

    • @SnowFox102
      @SnowFox102 6 місяців тому

REM is a very light stage of sleep, it isn't the deep stage needed for healing. I would expect all stages of sleep have a purpose, but I don't think REM is as important as the deeper stages.

With so many people taking multiple prescription drugs and illegal drugs including alcohol, caffeine and dark chocolate it is a one way ticket.
