Great song and reaction! I agree with ITCHY that their version of I CANT HELP FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU is another great song. UB40 is a total vibe. This group is a great example of “Don’t judge the book by the cover.” White English and Welsh boys spitting reggae/calypso music, lol. Love it!!
What you call "rapping" is toasting. It can be talking rhythmically, but also often chanting in a monotone melody (like in 'Red Red Wine') by a reggae deejay over a rhythm or beat. Traditionally, the method of toasting originated from the griots of Caribbean calypso and mento traditions. The lyrics can either be improvised or pre-written. Toasting has been used in various African traditions, such as griots chanting over a drum beat, as well as in the United States and Jamaican music forms, such as ska, reggae, dancehall, and dub; it also exists in grime and hip hop coming out of the United Kingdom, which typically has a lot of Caribbean influence. Toasting is also often used in soca and bouyon music. The African American oral tradition of toasting, a mix of talking and chanting, influenced the development of MCing in US hip hop music. The combination of singing and toasting is known as singjaying: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toasting_(Jamaican_music)
Try “Homely Girl” , “Wear you to the Ball”, “Don’t break my heart” “Here I am”, “ Baby” , “Rat in my Kitchen” the list is endless! Reminds me of happier times in my not so happy childhood. ❤️
Looking forward to this one and love your reactions. This great song was a cover of Neil Diamond's Red, red wine. The best UB40 song in my humble opinion is 'One in ten'.. I remember when you reacted to Grandmaster Flash The message, how you felt that it told a story, it gave you a narrative of the time it was written. Similarly if you listen to UB40's One in ten, you will get a feel for what life was like in the UK in 1980/81. xx
The original is by Neil Diamond, This cover is by a British Band, UB40 The name "UB40" was selected in reference to an attendance card issued to people claiming unemployment benefits from the UK government Department of Employment.
One of my favourite memories is from 1990, sleeping on the floor of a hut in a village on the main island of Fiji - no power, no running water, etc. - and two guys walk past the hut with an old ghetto-blaster playing this song. That and the two horses that would eat outside of my hut every night farting constantly.
The video is good if you can get to see it. Those photos are not the band as they were when they recorded this one. They were very young. I loved this one back in the day and still do. I think a few people were surprised to know that this was a British band. The name UB40 comes from the name of the Unemployment Benefit form 40 people had to fill in to claim that benefit. :)
Have seen this band several times over the years in different formats. They have lost some very talented band members since then, but there is no denying the fantastic sound of UB40. Can't wait until they arrive in Sydney in October. 🤞🇦🇨💕
When I was a teen, I was vacationing at a great resort (parents loved to spoil with luxuries on vacations) that played reggae from 10am-10pm live. I woke up on my 16th birthday to hearing this song being played live beneath the balcony. It started an amazing birthday!
My favourites💯- • Where Did I Go Wrong • Bring Me Your Cup • Homely Girl • Tears From My Eyes • I’ll be on my way • Cherry Oh Baby • If It Happens Again
Recklezz you have said that right astro rip was brilliant on red red wine and Ali Campbell has a great voice and when UB40 were all still together in happier times the reggae vibe from there music was off the scales now in 2023 sadly astro rip is no longer with us there's now 2 bands robin Campbell with his band and UB40 ft Ali Campbell and Ali Campbell was lead vocals from the start and since losing our beloved astro rip Ali Campbell voice is still the same and to a lot of fans Ali Campbell will always be the voice of UB40
Been following you since you started the channel Recklezz. Stoked that you are finally reacting to reggae. As its been said, Bob Marley "brought the 3rd world to the 1st world" by being the messiah of reggae. But reggae existed before and after Bob. Many different styles and so many different talented artists. Here's 5 artists that represent different styles and different eras and different parts of the globe. 1) Mortimer (Jamaican), song "Lightning" 2) Lucky Dube (South African), live version of song "Its Not Easy" 3) Matisyahu (American), live acoustic version of "One Day/No Woman No Cry" medley 4) Justin Wellington (Papua New Guinean), song "In Love With U 5) The Green (Hawaiian), song "All I Need" This is just the tip of the reggae iceberg. I could easily list 100 more.
Great reaction! I’ve always loved this song! Someone else recommended Ghost Town by The Specials and I totally second that recommendation! One of my favorite songs. Also around this time there was a song called Pass The Dutchie by Musical Youth… you gotta listen to this song!
You need to fall down this rabbithole! I've been blessed to see these guys 3 or 4 times over the years, the last one was a couple of months ago at the O2 London, as a tribute to Astro. RIP.
That's a great hit but I think it depends on the vibe of the situation the song of UB40 is great at, then again, all UB40 songs are just...damn too good.
That vibe at the end that dude comes in wit is called dancehall style of reggae which is arguably the biggings of rap. Check out u roy natty don't fear or yellow man mr. Chin or two to six super mix or u brown let love shine along the way. All of them are classic dancehall styleee ✌️❤️
UB40 was the card you took down the Unemployment benefit office to sign on to get your benefits, also got you money off tickets for their concerts, some great tracks about, King, One in ten, Earth dies screaming, to name a few, great reaction, cheers.
Wear you to the ball and can’t help fallin in love are two of my faves from this amazing band and well worth checking out, great reaction guys and thanks a lot for reacting to the extended version
This is my favorite version of this song. When it comes on in the car, people in cars next to me look at me like I'm nuts. It's impossible to hold still when this song is on.
love some ub40 always makes me think of summers in the 80's.if you want more astro then do rat in mi kitchen.other songs. 1 in 10 food for thought kingston town cherry oh baby sing our own song many rivers to cross
I would like to thank the Reactors of this Channel.. from the bottom of my heart. What you posted (With the Rap)..is the regular one. Radio Stations just didn't play it often.. due to time restraints in programming. You are officially the only reviewers on UA-cam..to post the FULL song. This Version.. is the way it was written. Any other form back then.. was only a Radio Edit.
I preferred it without the rapping. I certianly dont remember it when it first came out out around '83 with rapping on it, i dont think the radio ever played it that way back then, but i dunno for certain, was a long time ago now, still a great song though and band.
These guys do mad covers and some of them are banging!! Do the official video for "Can't help falling in love" by them!! Imo their version is superior to the Elvis version!!!
fun fact. Name UB40 they took their name from the British Unemployment Benefits card or form No 40 as they have been all unemployed at the time they formed the band.
UB40 where a much more conscious band than this- this song was ok but they have some songs that really have a strong message, especially when they first came on the scene. For you Americans listen to 'Tyler' (about Gary Tyler who was jailed in 1974 in Louisiana when he was 16 years old) or 'King' (referring to Dr Martin Luther King Junior) but I have to recommend 'One in 10' as my favourite
Check out Jimmy Cliff, 'The Harder They Come', 'Pressure Drop' by Toots and the Maytals, 'Solidarity' by Black Uhuru, Peter Tosh, 'Legalize It.' And more Marley, Bob's the GOAT. Enjoy it all.
This song was not written.. by anyone of Jamacian heritage. I was shocked this year to find ..it was written by an American . Neil Diamond wrote this song.
UB40 stands for Unemployment Benefits form 40. Its the form folks used to have to fill out back in the day to receive benefits. Neil Diamond wrote this song. And he has said that he likes this version better than his original.
This one and their second albums are their bests. Their covers are pretty lit. Just the way they've rearranged it to sound it original was always their strengths. They're from England lol not jamaica, apart from Astro (the afro guy, RIP by the way). RnB you have "soul" , in reggae you have "reggae love" genre. Eddie Lovett gets into that category. Check out his covers they are pretty lit. "Kingston town" in their second albums is my go to when I listen to them. "Rapping" in the reggae context is called "scatting" I think. Anywho, UB40 is a household name in the islands. Reggae is the island go-to genre of music. 🙂 I'm an islander myself. You have also African reggae which is more tribal. Alpha blondie is one household name in that part of the world.
Love to see the effect of Jamaican influence on these young Americans.... At the same time im completely failing to the reggae connection with Led Zeppelin ( one of the worlds heavy rock bands?.?.. who by coincidence, also hail from Birmingham UK
they are a british band, with british jamaican members they were from birmingham england

I’m Jamaican and this is my favorite reggae song on all time.
Grew up with UB40, U2, Springsteen, to name a few, in the 80's. In my opinion, the 80's had the best music ever!
If you want another type of reggae, try 'Ghost Town' by The Specials. Definitely a vibe.
Ghost Town is one of my all time favorites!!
Yeah , great song is ghost town! Always play it on Halloween night 👻👻👻

Should react to UB40's other song called "Kingston Town" definitely a great song.

Toots is a Jamaican reggae singer and the best I've ever seen. One of our best was The Beat
