I have a SL-5800 and a sl-hf300. The 5800 doesn't like ejecting tapes properly. And holds on to the tape itself. I had to cut off a about a few seconds of a Marry Poppins movie to remove it from its jaws. The 300 doesn't output audio through the A/V or coaxial cables. Any idea how to begin fixing this rather beautiful machines??
The 5800 more than likely needs belts and a good service including checking for hardened grease. The HF300 - when you play a tape back is there any counter movement and do you get any indication of audio from the meters? Does the tape appear to be running at a constant and correct speed? Does tracking make any difference at all? There are a lot of things that can cause A/V muting on those machines but check the simple and more common things first like cleaning the deck and checking that alignment visually looks OK as the tape goes through the path.
