It's ironic that back in 1984, these kinds of graphics were too complex for even arcade games to manage and now 30 years later, they're considered primitive. We now have games that can render real-graphics a dozen times more detailed than those used in the movie for the 'real' parts.
true .....the funny thing is .....the high fidelity graphics we are experiencing 30 years later in games now and in the near future were made possible by discoveries that started one year after this movie came out! Look up Jim Kajiya...scientist who came up with the Rendering Equation that brought photorealism to computer graphics! His discovery dates back to 1985, but the gaming world is just now beginning to see the implications of his work decades later due to exponential improvements in computing power!
lurkerrekrul Fun fact, the Cray X-MP that was used in rendering the CGI in this film (which was state of the art in 1984) is roughly equivalent to an 800MHz AMD Athlon.
I played this game on the PC gamepad. For the controls, look at the readme file after you install the game. It will tell you what keys to use and push to get the controls to work properly for this game. It really helped.
Space tactical fighters have come along. In the early 1960's, the design of choice for movies were X-15's launched from the rails that, in those days, launched Nike series anti-aircraft missiles. Those X-15's employed an energy beam, of little note. Then, some science fiction writer, in his novel, had as orbital defense fighters, single seat cylindrical vehicles , which were steered to impact. As insane as this sounds, think of it..."us and them" both launching cylindrical one way missions, racing around the globe in attempts intercept "one of theirs" by a collision with "one of ours", thereby creating more of a mess of orbiting debris. No energy weapons, no warheads, just "two cylindrical cars in space", attempting to stay ahead of an orbital "T-bone"!
If I had to guess, it was probably due to a combination of the videogame crash that occurred a year prior to the film being released and the stress of creating all the complicated CGI (which was completely new and state-of-the-art for 1984) that ruined Nick Castle's appetite for a sequel.
The film wasn't hugely profitable at the time and as a result the video game never came out and the potential sequel was put on ice. And thing about it, imagine if they made a sequel today, or a reboot? It wouldn't just be a big dumb science fiction action flick, it will be INCREDIBLY dumb, and the star will be an autistic, non binary, kid that wears drag. You know what they'll do to this if it gets made today in THIS political climate. It was a fun film for it's time, the graphics of the fictional game was great for its time, but things belong in a proper age and time.
Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) broke the record in this videogame, and Centauri (Robert Preston) has invented this 1984 arcade game, STARFIGHTER, which is why he, Centauri has come to pick up Alex Rogan to take him from Las Vegas to Planet RYLOS.
@WARPUDDY666 it runs on my windows 7 pc. To run this game in windows 7, you need the d3drm.dll file put it in the same directory as the starfighter.exe is located. You can google search this file and look at the first few links. It's free to download. This should solve the problem.
I have an arcade place by me called Galloping Ghosts, they have a ton of arcade games & its unlimited free play on all games as long as you pay $25 for entry. If I could make this as a cabinet & say to them I figure you guys would want this. See if they would take it & have fans play it.
Controls seem a little overly sensitive. Still, awesome you have managed to make an entire game, seeing as we only get to see short clips of the game in the movie. It looks spot on.
I wanted to watch this movie so bad I fell asleep 4 or 5 times at the beginning of the movie. When I finally watched it I think it was no good. Maybe I built myself up too much.
At the time, they could not, for it was too advanced for a arcade machine to process even just Vector and raster graphics at the same time was unfeasible, much less vector/3d polygon. The closest game graphically to this was Atari's I, Robot, a 3d polygon game with little detail that flopped badly. Plus the cost to attempt it would have been too much to make a profit.
You also have to remember that this was during the video game crash of 1984 and Atari was trying to save money. All in all, this was an excellent rendition of what was seen in the movie and the Last Starfighter deserves an update reboot.
+CCJJ160Channels I think this version is a real game, some fans made an actual arcade game of this. here it is: www.roguesynapse.com/games/last_starfighter.php
The guys of RogueSynapse really did an outstanding job developing this. Did you have some kind of cheat setting on, if so how did you do that? I know there's a setting that can be adjusted to make enemy missiles less likely to hit the Gunstar, but it looks like you've got some kind of no damage God mode on.
So I have windows 10, and whenever I run the game there are two black rectangles covering all but the center of the targeting reticle. Anybody else run into this problem?
yes. having the same problem, trying very hard to find a solution. Haven't found an answer yet. Although the opening screen grid check is off on mine and I think it might have something to do with that. but I'm not sure. Let me know if you find a solution and I'll do the same.
I know the game is hard man, but did you seriously have to cheat this bad to win?! you have like unlimited hits and your laser/particle beams dont hardly drop any. the whole point of multiple weapons was that you had to alternate between the three to get to the end. i beat the game with the settings a little easier than stock, but not this overtly cheat settings. i may make a video of my skills at this game to show people what a real starfighter looks like.
Trying to get this to run on a modern-ish PC (Windows 10), but it seems to have been written over a decade ago in some kind of obscure Basic language. Can't get past the title screen. Anyone actually figured out how to get it to play?
I got the game thanks to the link. And the game loads great on my old PC running Windows 7. I have a question though. Is it possible to use my Xbox 360 controller with the game? I have already set up the controller to run on my PC. Just wondering if it is compatible with The Last Starfighter game. I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks
How do you get this to work at all, im having trouble with it and i cant figure it out, its says im missing the d3drm.dll file but then idk what to do from there
+William “666 Demon” Harris That DLL is part of older versions of DirectX and has not been included in Windows since Vista. Anyway, you can just download it from www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?d3drm . 1) click on "Download zip file" 2) select either of the two versions 3) download the file 4) unzip it into the same directory as the Starfighter executable.

Arcade1up should get the license to release this in a standalone 3/4 scale identical replica cabinet.

There is still no photorealism of human characters, and there probably will never be with silicone based graphics.

EPIC! I am going to make the Starlite Starbrite sign for my front yard, I might make a mock arcade machine and run this on it. :)

This begs to be on the Atari Jaguar...It would be a nice fit.
I like how on the High Score screen, the top score belongs to A_R.
Lewis, Centurion, and Grig are all there too
Contacted Arcade1up to do a cabinet based on this. Let’s hope!
