Making an 1860s Garibaldi blouse

  • Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
    In my previous video, I talked about how I was going to make some effort into making historically inspired pieces that I could integrate into my day-to-day wardrobe. Here is the first item I've made! This blouse was made using cotton ticking and the Truly Victorian Garibaldi blouse pattern.
    The pattern was very easy to follow and the instructions were also very clear. I really love the outcome. I ended up keeping my mock-up too, which means I have a more modern-looking sleeveless top for the summer (I keep thinking it has some 1940s vibes when without the sleeves?!).
    I haven't worn this blouse yet, as the weather has been a bit chilly still and I have basically been wearing four jumpers at the same time. However, I really like the look of it and it is very comfortable! In particular, I love the full sleeves which are set lower down than modern clothing, which I really like.
    Next up, I've got two skirts and two more blouses in my to do list!

    Nice pattern matching at the shoulders. And funny: what you call french seam, in the Netherlands we call english seam 😂, but you did a nice job 🤩 💃🏻

      If you're looking for historical sewing, you should check out Bernadette Banner's channel if you're not already familiar with it. She does a lot of original practice and breaks down many of the historical sewing methods.

    That fabric gives me such nostalgia as it is super similar to the fabric of a shirt my father used to wear all the time when I was young. It's so beautiful and the blouse came out great. I really want to make something similar for myself :)

    I don't know what it is about your videos but you give me more sewing confidence. You make the designs/patterns more approachable. Although I love watching other historic sewing channels, they all don't do that. I also love your calm voice and the gentle music you choose. Thank you!
    Also, I've been obsessively scrolling through the TV patterns and looking for accompanying sew alongs. You did a great job!

    Lovely pattern and work, as well as video graphing and music. The horizontal tuck to shorten the sleeves on this lovely blouse is a great idea, Michele Harvey. To pre-check the length of the sleeve at pattern stage, consider measuring from Center Back (because the shoulder seam is not AT the shoulder), across the shoulder seam, and down the length of the sleeve piece, and include the measurement of the cuff depth. Compare this to the measurement from your Center Back at the base of your neck, across the shoulder, down the arm, with a bent elbow to where you want the sleeve to end (often wrist bone). This will give you a ballpark measurement. If the sleeve is to be full, there will be more length on the pattern measurement, but it might prevent the need for the additional tuck (or tucks?).

      No bust dart on this! This is the long version, the pattern has a different belted version (my mock up) where there are gathering threads where you would usually put darts. The long version isn’t fitted at all but more like a loose blouse meant to be tucked in 😊

    this is Kathy not Paul. I was wondering about the sleeves. You said you put hemming lace on it, but how? Did you encase the the seams? I noticed you didn't clip the underarm seam allowance. Was that in the directions? I have ruined so many items by bad button holes!. Loved the fabric and the blouse is very nice.

    • @CatsCostumery
      @CatsCostumery  4 роки тому +1

      I trimmed back the sleeves seam allowance and so I didn’t bother clipping them (though it’s probably best practice to do!) I encased the seam in the lace tape just like you would fo with bias binding :)

    If you are making a garment you plan to keep, don't use Fray Check! It is NOT archival. Our teacher for my heirloom class brought in a Christening gown to show us what we could make, and the buttonholes that she had used Fray Check on were badly yellowed! Her beautiful work was now something to NOT show off... Use it for stuff you're going to wear for a few years, and then toss, but not any "good outfit" you plan to keep around...😮‍💨
