Thanks Shauna. Hearing about the beginning of Diana's courtship was such a delight. I had no idea King Charles was such a ladies man!!! You sure make this an interesting book!!!
Thank you for providing a channel for people who have an interest in the British royal family. No one in my life has any interest in them despite all my efforts. Your content is always enjoyable, and I love reading the comments left by your viewers. I hope you continue to discuss information taken from the older books which are now out of print. Keep the information coming.
Shauna, I’ve never heard this version of Diana and Charles’s beginning. Your bubbly excitement added warmth and was romantic. Most stories were sterile and seemed ,he was pressured into getting married. Even so, the engagement announcement ,showing the staff the bride to be and their gushing over the ring, with admiration and giggles ,it was so delightful . With your expressive reading,I could hear the popping! 💖
Yes! Both have been written as believable behind the scenes observations and opinions. Getting Shauna's observations and opinions are an extra treat. That bit about Stephen Barry's b*tch* comment regarding Princess Grace's eldest daughter was b*tch* but funny.
More delightful inside information. So enjoying the peeks into King Carles' youth. Rather nice to know the relationship with Diana started off on the right foot. So sad it all went wrong. Thanks for reviewing this book...love it!! Cheers and sip from Canada 🇨🇦
Not just the book is good, but your way to introduce and comment on it is enjoyable and fun and I am getting addict ;-) ....can´t wait for the next one! Thanks!
What fun today listening to the King Charles courting so many women, and how the staff reacted when his engagement was announced. So exciting! Living in the US, I got up the morning to watch the wedding! I was enthralled!
Oh my…….😂I was exhausted after that chapter ! I had no idea how many ladies there were in Prince Charles bachelor days! It was fun learning his preferences and all the goings on! It must have been a bit of a shock for him being married. THANKS again Shauna for bringing this all to life so wonderfully❤️❤️☕️sip!
Kia Ora from across the ditch. I’m loving this series. In fact I love everything you do. Congratulations on your fast growing subscriber list. You deserve it.
We are going too fast!!!! I want it to last longer!!! I love the Barry's stories! I am bereft when they end. They were loyal during their service and I think wrote honestly, and had to support themselves someway when their service ha ended. they wrote these books, but I think they put the King in a good light. I'm certain the King didn't see it that way, but they were loyal staff and following that they put him in a generally good light. King Charles should be happy they published these books, they make him human to the rest of us. And he sounds like a good human.
Really like listening to you reading and discussing books. Your reading voice is dramatic, humourous, smooth, nicely paced at just the right times. Thank you, Shauna. Just a delightful experience for me.😊
Love listening to you reading Shauna. The book is fascinating, bringing history from behind the scenes out into the open. It is bitter sweet hearing about Lady Diana, she'll always be a young woman to me. Thank you.
Love your reading of this book! Perhaps you could let us know how the King & Queen are being received in your country (and any gossip !!!). Can’t wait for the next chapter ❤ 🇬🇧

When you’re newly married some people will bow down to an insecurity that another partner may feel by ending old friendships instead of giving security/love to within that relationship .
Thank you! I very much appriciate your opinion regarding the alleged emotional attachment Charles had with Camilla after his wedding to Diana, at barely 20 it would of course be bothersome at best for a young and in love bride. Again, thank you... Cheers from the US!
Love to hear such a beautiful piece of history and to know they did love each other in the beginning and the ppl also did love her. Can't wait to do my Andrew shopping next year 😂❤. Our bookshop did say it best for me to wait for his new book and then they will order it all together for me. Don't wanna ask my brother-in-law any more. He lives in England but never wants me to give the money back so now I don't ask him. Some books are really hard to get here.
The montage on the opera house was lovely. The state premiers are a disgrace. But the welcome given the rain and time of night and the king's health was good
The story spun in the media has a narrative that doesn’t match what’s happening on the ground. Let’s just say Shame on the current batch of politicians. Don’t lump us all in with them.
Marvelous read😊🩷👍 With regard to Princess Diana however….. THE FIRST RULE of any game is to know you are in one!!! Someone probably should have mentioned this to Diana😢
Charles was quite the good red blooded male! Perhaps the proposal to Lady Di was made not on ones knees but another more reclined position? Charles did reply "neither" 😂😂😂
Such a lovely memoir. I remember how excited we all were when the engagement was announced and the glorious day of the wedding. Our daughter was only just over a year old and slept all the way through, so we could hog the TV without interruption. I also recall the fireworks the evening before and how nearly every house had decorated their windows with posters and gardens with flags. So sad, the way the fairytale ended.
Yes to everything you said here. My son was also a year old - 1980 baby. He slept all the time anyway (at one point I was worried) (and he still does whenever he can at 44) so I could watch, record (on VHS) and watch again. Sigh. It was so dreamy in all ways.
I feel charles was made to marry Diana , just for heirs ,so I don't think he should get the stick he got ,he always wanted to marry camilla ,it was a shame all round but that's The Royal family for you ,Charles was to be king so he had to have children ,to carry on the name ,it was a shame for both him and Diana 😢 but at least we got the wonderful William ,so that's a blessing x
@@mezzamuddle, apparently Camilla really wanted to marry Andrew Parker Bowles. Where did the rumor start that Charles wanted to marry Camilla in the 1970s???
Thanks, so much, Shauna! I am really enjoying this one! (I think I’ve said that for every book you’ve featured!) Tangent ~ I’m sure you’ve read all of Jane Austen but have you read Georgette Heyer? As a fellow book lover, I’m going to assume you have. Don’t you think, her books would make lovely tv movies? I began reading her books in the early 70’s. Once Austen’s works we’re made into movies, I thought for sure Heyer’s would be as well. OH ~ How’s your ankle? You did this video from your “Gossip” chair. Are you still in a cast? Thanks, again, Shauna. 🖖😁💙
If I had been stuck in Clarence House with the Queen Mum, and I didn't like it I would spend our evenings getting the goods on Wallis! And also talking about the war and so much. Diana missed hr chance to learn about history from the horse's mouth.
I had no idea that Prince Charles was actually in love with Diana; when he said "whatever love means" one doubted he was truly in love. But it sure sounds as thought he was as excited at getting married to Diana as we all became to be. What a tragedy that it was meant to last. If she had played her cards right, she would have been a grandmother today, as well as the queen. I guess there are no co-incidences. Fate played her hand.
The story about Lady Tryon being dumped is interesting because I don't recall anything much being said about her in Andrew Morton's book...and if Camilla was such a threat in the beginning, why didn't she receive the same treatment....
Diana was reported to have hated Balmoral…but went twice to see him there..staying with the Queen Mum…now wouldn’t this warn you this wasn’t the man and life for you? Did she think she would change him that much ?
The bit being left out is that Anna was jealous because the Prince was canoodling with Camilla at these dances and ignoring her! Her comment was ‘you don’t get to do that to me, even if you are the Prince’. Diana also based her engagement ring off Anna’s only bigger. According to my research. She could tolerate a mistress just not the public humiliation. Her nickname was Whiplash Wallace as she had a temper apparently.
I am Diana's age, and I must admit, when it came out that Charles had an affair, and Diana was crushed, I thought to myself, "Well, isn't it a 'thing' with the royal family, that the men are a bit, um...over-amorous? Even I know that!" (I am American) Surely, she realized! But, over the years, my thoughts about that have changed. Maturing, and seeing the broken-hearted-ness of a love gone wrong, I can see how one might think, "This is different, it won't happen to me," especially if one is as young as Diana was. I do see that this was not a good match. I also see that Charles was older than she, and certainly more experienced in the "relationship" game. I do place more of the blame on him than her. They are, however, both human beings with their own flaws and attributes. I married a man twenty-two years my senior, and we are still married thirty-six years later. But I was twenty-seven and had been around the block more than I should have, and so I was much more mature and "worldly" than Diana, and certainly than I had been at Diana's age when she married Charles. I also had solid parents to whom I could turn with problems, as well as one or two older women who had good marriages and to whom I could turn. But Diana hadn't that. So, I am much more inclined to take a softer look at her than it seems many do. BTW, my husband always felt sorry for her.
It's nice to know that Charles was trying to commit to the marriage to Di. Unfortunately Di wasn't a good "fit" into his life style tho she pretended to be before the engagement & wedding. ie: he loved the country life, she preferred city life. Could this be why Kanga or any of the other woman Charles had a friendship with previously was pushed to the side by Di after they married? For his part, it seems Charles may have tried his best to appease Di in this as a way to help assure her of his commitment knowing how it would take Di time to adjust to royal life.
They were too different and too far in age for each other. Charles was seeing Camilla behind Diana's back. He was not honest with Diana from the start.
Very interesting and a good read. I personally never thought big 👂👂Charles was handsome. He should have stood up to for himself and married Camilla to start with....
That’s funny because Diana pretended to love the country life when she actually hated it, they were so incompatible. She was false advertising in a big way that truly ended up costing her everything and that part isn’t funny.
Am I being cynical when I doubt if marriage to any of those girls would have lasted? I wonder if he would have loved any of them more than Camilla.... He and Camilla were already involved when he married Diana. Breaks one's heart. It started so beautifully but I don't think he was in love. He was very taken with Diana but could not say that they were in love when asked at their engagement. 😢
They weren't. Both were married to other people but had a very close friendship. Diana started having affairs after William was born. Way long before Camilla was divorced and Charles renewed their friendship.
I don't think Charles would answer that question in the affirmative even if it was asked about him and Camilla. He wasn't brought up to emote all over the place in front of strangers and cameras. Not on a personal matter like that.
glad I had insomnia again, was able to catch you as soon as you uploaded....I am glad that their marriage started out with both of them if not in deep love were at least infatuated with each other....although I believe if Charles had completely broken away from Camilla, a lot of Diana's behavior that drove a wedge between them would not have happened....I feel she was reacting to Charles and Camilla's close emotional behavior with each other, man who calls a woman "friend" on their honeymoon??!! or receives or give presents just before marriage that were so intimate?!! Diana reacted like any 19 year old girl would have....and Charles being emotionally stunted himself, just couldn't handle the admiration of the public for Diana....he should have reacted like Jack Kennedy did with Jackie in France, just be proud his choice of a wife was so popular, but no he felt somehow diminished....at least I think that after listening to his interview or hers as well....all boils down to 2 people who were distant with their mothers as a young child and grew up wanting love and support, both were unable to deal with the emotional needs of the new relationship, the public and the expectations of the "job"......I had such hopes for the two, but it wasn't the storybook ever after, but really does it exist? any marriage has it's ups and downs, they just aren't on public display, and oh my God how horrible it would be that every facial expression could be misconstrued....at least the marriage produced on amazing man who will be, God willing, King....the other, well can't always bat 100....
Rob Jobson told Phil Craig and Andrew Lownie that it was the policeman's wife the tabloids were writing about. He also said that when the Queen and Prince Philip read the papers in the morning while eating breakfast and they thought it was Lady Diana and Prince Philip assumed they were "having relations" and if Charles was in love ask her to be his wife or break it off before her reputation is sullied, so he proposed, but he was surprised because they hadn't had too much time alone and he felt they should get to know each other more . I guess now that you said everyone speculates, maybe Mr Jobson was lying because he and Camilla are really good friends, he didnt want to hurt her feelings or he was covering for her not wanting Charles in trouble with Lady Di
I feel like a child again, loving a good story from a good storyteller!

Wow so much intrigue, it must be really hard to be normal
My uncle was farm manager to the Hesketh at Easton Neston. So I saw the ‘boys’ occasionally. I wasn’t impressed l.
I worked as a nanny for the Lucas' Hesketh Racings chief engineer. I met Lord Hesketh while with them. He was very nice.
