  • The Tour of our 1968 two story school bus. My wife and I decided to move into this double decker purple bus to start a simple life. A tiny house has many large advantages. We were fortunate enough to find a bus with most of the work already completed.
    The bus has
    two propane furnaces
    instant hot water heater
    large bathroom
    a covered back deck
    a overhead deck upstairs
    100 gal propane tank
    7000 generator
    two water storage tanks
    dual fuel tanks
    dual blackwater tanks
    a grey water tank
    central vac
    We are planning on installing a spiral staircase, rocket stove that heats water, compost toilet, and a smaller instant water heater, in the near future.

    A recirculating or cassette toilet would be more sanitary and suitable for muicipal sewage treatment. I wouldn't want to use a composting toilet if I had an intestinal or digestive infection. BTW, human waste is not the same as leftover scraps from fruits or vegetables. Bacteria, viruses, metabolic byproducts from medications are present. Untreated runoff could contaminate rivers and streams.

    • @BrycePhelps
      @BrycePhelps  5 років тому

      The compost toilet gets emptied into a 55 gallon drum where it sits for roughly 18 months before I compost into hay. Just the current process I have going. Thanks :)

    Now that those asssholes let me alone, i can be honest. Two years ago when I made that snarky post I had no clue what I was talking about. I do 100% design tiny home floor plans. Im certified through AutoCad Revit, and thats where all my work is done. I now see the benefits of having a composting toilet for some people, but i will say i do advise against it to new Rv'ers or people who arent savy with that kind of maintenance. Also, calling you a hick was out of line. I apologize, of course you still had the bus, no point in me dragging you into that.

    Thanks, Yes the bus is just under 14' so travel might be a bit more legal. Upstairs is mostly going to be a sleeping storage area for that reason. Sorry the microwave thing is mostly a inside joke, I try not to use them whenever possible because I'm just not convinced its safe long term with the way it alters food. And the engine I was contemplating swapping for diesel but then priced propane (the existing one is converted to run on propane) at $1.79 I know less power and mpg but the price.

  • @BrycePhelps
    @BrycePhelps  11 років тому

    it has a 366 in it, no sure yet about the weight, the good news is it's converted to run on the propane so I wouldn't have to fill up both fuel tanks. Bad news is propane = less hp. Going to get it running and see how it handles the load. Then I also have a separate newer diesel bus as a backup plan for the motor and axles/air brakes. Really making it up as I go.

  • @BrycePhelps
    @BrycePhelps  11 років тому

    Thanks, the plan is to build a rack on top to house solar panels, solar water heater, and a solar heater, but in the future. Just to expensive to complete now and I need to move in sooner than later. I'll check out the video..and see what this layout is all about

    what a pile.. I know a lot about electrical and mechanical, I dont see this hunk moving. I dont think this guy has a clue, he has gotten into a nightmare. I liked the compressor tank for the brakes and/or the single battery for power. Use maybe 4 deep cycle marine batteries in parallel, then you got something. Solar w/inverter @ 400 watts could solve problems

      I have to agree. I am not trying to be rude, but the weight of that bus with the propane tank, water tanks, weight of the second story...etc is a bit worrying. You will be taxing that engine, clutch, tranny and rear axle like mad. It just looks unsafe. Best thing for you is to salvage the goodies and invest in something a bit more...safe.

      I'm sure, if this place was gutted and started from scratch it could be amazingly beautiful and cool... But right now, it just looks like some busted ass mess.
      And with all the weight of the full size shower, dishwasher, other appliances, I doubt this thing would get very far down the road.
      Unless they're comfortable living in dumpy conditions, and not actually traveling in it, it would get the job done. But if they're looking for a safe and cost efficient tiny home that can travel round the country, they have a lot of work to do. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the second floor just collapsed due to all the excess weight that was once up there, I can't believe it had a jacuzzi tub and 3 toilets!!! Hearing this, I'm positive this beast hasn't run down a road in many many years. The whole thing should really be gutted, fumigated, and aired out for at least a week, especially if they mention it smells of cat/human urine when the bus comes with windows and ventilation fans.
      It really is a hazardous situation as it is... And the guy giving the tour seems to be quite content leaving pretty much everything in besides the microwave... He says he won't use a microwave due to "free radicals" yet trying to drive this death trap down the road would waste so much fuel and cause a lot of pollution as is. And having food from the microwave is a lot safer than living in some moldy dump stained with urine, the carbon monoxide must be terrible.
      Just got to the part in the vid where they show under the hood.... hah, yeah, that bus isn't going anywhere anytime soon. It's also missing headlights/tail lights. And that front "balcony" area hanging over the engine space... definitely not legal on the road.
      No, this thing is not the ticket when it comes to hitting the road. The entire under carriage is completely rusted. I think this thing will cost a whole lot of money to fix up, and just hearing all times he says "I don't know what this is for" - he is way out of his element.
      Omg. The entire water filter is covered in mold... and he said they had to WD40 the door just to access it... Holy shit. I'm done. Hahahaha

    I personally think its badass, what you should do on the top is something like a popup camper except the ones that slide upwards on a hydraulic lift and its completely all metal, then you could have an 8 foot upstairs when its up and 4 foot when its down so you could meet height reuirements, sounds like a plan to me lol Wouldnt be too hard just need some sheet metal, a lift for the roof, some gasket like for a slideout, and a saw lol. If you dont get it google image for double decker rv 3rdpic

    do you have any plans to drive this on the road if so please tell me are there any requirements to legally drive the bus. My wife and I want a life on the road until we can build an earth house. How much money have you spent so far? I really like how you put two buses on top are there any restrictions on how tall you can make the bus for driving requirements? thank you and good luck!

    Love this!!! But why not convert it to solar power....I'm a scary cat to propane tanks....lol....and put a rain saucer on the top of the hip home to catch the rain water to keep your fresh water tanks full? Just some ideas I thought.....I believe the space can be better organized, I would gut the entire thing out and start from scratch. check out a vid called 6 rooms into 1....it wont be exact but it gives great ideas.....of course you may have already finished this project...lol

    justa word on microwave if you keep as spray bottle of fresh drinking water and when you microwave mist all food with water it creates a stem barrier it doesn't kill food that way trust me i know this from experience i discover this will cooking in a bbq restaraunt ove ten yrs ago and still use that trick today infact doing that will actualy restore left ovr food to put proper amount of miosture back in it so think bout this before you tear that mic out just a thought nice project by the way

    notice the rot in the floor pan early on. Ive personally grossed 60,000-90,000# on a three axle straight truck chassis on a regular basis. even gone airborne on gravel roads with that kind of weight with no negative effects. Id avoid rusty trucks like the plague. Id also avoid a bus from a rural school district. Gravel roads hammer the shit out of a vehicle and they tend to rust in places not easily seen.

    also im guessin that 366 will probably run they probably took things apart to clean the parts up also being chevrolet if youwanted to change engines you halve a pretty open book there even a duramax as there are stand alone controls available but a 6.2 diesel would almost bolt right in, same bell housing on all these engines just tryin to help

    Knock the big stuff off and chemical treat with por 15 or something similar. Another way is to starve the oxygen and mouisture with a coat of roofing tar. Ive seen old farmers coat machinery with kerosene then drive around a dusty road. The dust combines with the kerosene to make a nice moisture barrier. Good luck with the project.

    ZOMG! This is what I am wanting to do, we will have three kids soon and want to live full time on the road, so we will need darn near that amount of space. Since you bought it in the US, I imagine it is street legal, how tall is it from ground to roof? Have you had any issues with over passes?

    Lot's of work, time and money went into making that bus. Pretty cool score getting it already like that. Must have saved a bundle over doing it all yourself. All those parts and pieces costing more and more every day. Good luck with your project.
