    This was an amazing tutorial. I've always been able to draw and paint but in my adult years I hate doing it. I hate the mess and I can't afford supplies. I borrowed my brother's drawing tablet this weekend to try my hand at digital painting and I'm blown away by what I can accomplish and this tutorial has given me the key to unlocking so many tools. I'd really love to get into concept art. Thanks so much!

    I find it difficult to create a sense of scale in my drawings and paintings, for example, something extremely large and colossal that dwarfs everything surrounding it, or vice versa. It lacks atmosphere and looks flat, I don't know how to achieve the looming/imposing quality I want, or how to do it. It would be amazing if you could do a video on scale and how to create contrasting scale and contain it all on a canvas. Your videos are super helpful so far!

      try focusing on balance. Large to medium to small. Its all abut balance and composition. Dark shapes are heavy and weigh one side, so if you have a large mass on one side, counter balance it.

    • @MatthewSmith-zo9st
      @MatthewSmith-zo9st 8 років тому +10

      @aaliyah Green also contrasts, things closer have more detail in the line of sight, things father will be less detailed and less saturated with more atmospheric color (blues, reds, yellows) depending on the time of day or environment

      Perspective is key. Imagine something colossal, like the... Colosseum! Now imagine a person standing right next to it. You will have difficulty fitting them both into the same artwork unless the person is a tiny dot. You can make the person bigger but will be forced to crop out most of the Colosseum. So this shows that some structures are so large we cannot appreciate them on the same plane (same distance from viewer) as the best points of reference for scale, which happens to be a human. Now imagine a human walking in the foreground, and a hundred feet away there is a much smaller human, and hundreds of feet away a group of humans, so small they are just points. Then, much farther back, you have this truly massive structure, as tall as 50 Colosseums (yes it's possible to demonstrate this scale if you place its base close to the horizon and still it reaches to the top of the canvas). This is what I mean by perspective is key to showing colossal sized thing.

    I strive to creating art that looks like your 3rd example in the beginning of the video. I knew about the mixer brush but i never thought people who do art like this would use real images. Now whenever i see art like that i'll feel a little better knowing that there is a high chance that what im seeing might be in fact a real images and they are not gods of the art world.
    I'm going to start experimenting with these styles and try and figure out how i can blend them to see how well i can fit them into drawings with characters who have an outline.
    Thank you for this amazing eyeopener

    Great tutorial, very helpful ! :)
    I'm a beginner, and a problem I have often is in early stages (when I put down the general shapes, colors), I have a hard time figuring out : if it doesn't look great because it's early stage and it's not supposed to look fantastic, or if it doesn't look good because I somehow messed up the proportions, perspective of the early stage. Is there a way to know if I'm "on the right track" when I'm painting ? Sometimes when I watch your videos in early stages of landscape painting I think "this looks kind of odd", but when you advance in the video and add other colors and lighting it looks amazing, you seem to have the ability of "project" yourself into the future and already know how the result will look like

    I started to paint with oil and canvases and never had any problem with greenery, but ever since I discovered the digital medium (it's been years and I can draw decently now) I've been struggling a lot with that...

    • @PiromancerFreak
      @PiromancerFreak 4 роки тому +1

      I started with digital first then took a traditional painting class. To my surprise, traditional painting is definitely easier. A paintbrush can naturally paint in foliage with little effort, but with a digital medium there's an entire library of options and techniques, none of which are immediately obvious.

    Thank you Walid. I'm passionate by map making for tabletop role-playing games since many years. I've good notions about photoshop but I'm a beginner in digital painting (between us.. it's a disaster!). So I was looking for good training for beginners explaining the basics of colorization that would help me in the very specific context of the fantasy maps design. I looked here and there, I even invested in the purchase of other training for beginners but without much success. After some training time, your "Painting Grass Tutorial" is the first real training that allowed me to start with a good foundation while providing me quickly encouraging results. Generally I don't like to spread me in thanks but I think it's necessary today, so thank you so match !

    This certainly helps! My only problem is I don't use Photoshop (I don't even think I have it on my computer at all) and while I can work around that with the styles, I don't have that many good brushes on the application I use (Paint SAI) and was wondering what the brushes you use look like so I might be able to replicate them in Paint SAI (because I assume your brush set only works in Photoshop).
    I also have a small complaint relating to your constant use of Photoshop because your videos are really helpful but it would be nice if you had tutorial videos for the use of other applications as well, and if not that at least providing an alternative technique for people who use other applications. I'm saying this because I had to constantly keep thinking about alternative ways to use the techniques that you use in your videos to produce the same result because I use a different application.

    Given the age of this I'm not sure if you'll see my comment, but around 36:57 you mention that when changing the opacity of the matte layer to blend with the painted layer it doesn't always show correctly. For this reason I would recommend using layer masks instead of erasing. Doing this would allow you to paint back in what was erased.

    • @WalidFeghali
      @WalidFeghali  6 років тому

      I read all comments! :) Yes, you're right - layer masks truly allow you to have more control. However, sometimes a lot of control isn't a good thing, and you just want to quickly drop something on there are play with opacity and move on. Great advice nonetheless! Best, W.

    hello! your videos have been helping me a lot so far, keep up the great work!
    i have a question about setting canvas' resolution, do you have a recommend value for it? does most of your work shares same resolution value?

    • @WalidFeghali
      @WalidFeghali  8 років тому

      I do it differently each time, but for this one I used 2000x1000 as a start, and then if I want to make it high res and detailed, I scale it up to about 5000x2500 or something similar. Look at your favorite images and just take their proportions. :) The bigger the canvas, the higher the resolution so you can do really detailed things.

      oh sorry, i meant the resolution value that you set under the height, and width when you create a new canvas

      Yes that's what I mean too. :) Start with something that looks good. 2000 by 1000 pixels is good!

    Good tutorial, but could be better if you zoom in sometimes to show the detail better. I'm also using Krita, which is a similar program, so I don't have those brushes. I'm capable of finding similar brushes though.

    One unfortunate thing is that you had brush names disabled for the entire video and now it's hard to find what you were using. Other than that, great tutorial!

    Mr.Walid !How to convert or painting image to 8bit(256 clolor or less) color?
    like hi quality pixel art from Arthuro ricic's paintings?
    That is, how to design and adjust or retouch a realistic painting, so that we have good quality when pixelating it.
    The number of colors should be below 180.
    thanks for you.

    Is it just me or did you change your brush pack some time after recording this video? Just downloaded it from your website but I have a really hard time finding the brushes you used in your tutorial. Did you sort it differently maybe? Mine are just sortet after default settings...
    I love your work, but I find it really hard to understand what brush you're using so my drawing always looks like crap :(

      Thanks so much for your answer!! It seems I have solved it as some of my brush settings were completely off, messing up my entire strokes. Thanks for your great work!
