- Pt. 1: Getting to Nepal | Hiking the EVEREST BASE CAMP TREK | EBC 2022 // THIS is the story of how I said “Yes” to my very first international trek, hiking up to Everest Base Camp in Nepal.
It took us over 30+ hours (including 3 flights: Seattle - Chicago, Chicago - Doha, Qatar and Doha - Kathmandu) with a 10-hour layover in Doha, Qatar, to get to Kathmandu, Nepal.
Once we were in Kathmandu, we would take a day off to acclimate to a new city, explore a new culture and adjust to a new time zone while also getting to indulge in the local cuisine.
The next morning, we hopped on a very small plane and flew out of Kathmandu into Lukla, one of the world’s most dangerous airports due to strong winds, being set at a high altitude of 2,845 meters or 9,333 feet and having single, short runway that angles down to the valley below.
From Lukla, we would officially start our trek up to Everest Base Camp.

Here's the first video from my recent trip to Nepal where five of my friends and I make the trek up to Everest Base Camp. Yes, the EBC!!! But first, it was quite the trek just getting to Kathmandu and Lukla. Let's go hiking!

@@ayushkhanal3517 Yes, we were VERY HAPPY to make it here safely. What a crazy plane ride that was. Whoah!! After we got off the plane, the ended up closing Lukla airport for the rest of the day due to low visibility/bad weather.

This whole trip felt so surreal, especially seeing those mountains in person. They were VERY intimidating and magical. My perspective on what a "real" mountain is now has completely changed.

I didn't realize my voice could go so high either. Apparently that happens when I'm REALLY nervous on a scary flight. Hahahaha!! I'd never been so happy to be stopped on a runway before in my life. That was a really good feeling.

I was quite proud of myself as well going to Nepal as my first international trek ever. There was some fear and I even tried talking myself out of going a couple of times. I’m so glad I ignored those fears and went anyways. One of my most favorite trips of my life!

Kathmandu was amazing. Even with all of the traffic and hecticness, I loved every minute of being there. That flight to Kuala was dramatic so it was important that I find the right music to fit the mood ALL OF US were in before and during that crazy flight. SIX more videos coming in this series!

Wonderful!!! I'm so happy that you're experiencing this. I used to have an import business and went to Nepal many, many times. In January of 2018 I did the Annapurna Circuit. Nepal is a lovely country with lots of trekking opportunities. You're going to want to return!

I am tempted to aim for a Nepal hike, but checking out some of your favorite Nepalese meals I can see, that cinnamon and cloves are prevalent spices, and unfortunately I am very allergic to those. I'll have to do a little research first.
You are such an inspiration, and I enjoy learning from you. I'm hoping to do the Tahoe Rim Trail next year - not sure yet if I want to do it in one go, or in sections. Since I live Truckee, it's close by, so I have options. I have all the gear (Thanks to watching your channel, as well as a couple other female hikers). However, the only backpacking I have done is the Camino de Santiago, which I did back in 2009, and that's quite different, since you hike through villages and towns, and don't camp.Not to mention, I am quite a bit older now, turning 70 next year. So, no time to procrastinate anything!😂

@@dustinkittel2830 My friend who put together the whole trip is the one who found our trekking company, Life Himalaya Trekking. She did a search for EBC trekking companies offering a helicopter return and they came up. She had such an incredible experience with working with them when booking the trip, which she was originally supposed to go on the trip right before COVID put us all into lockdown. She stuck with Life Himalaya Trekking because they were incredibly helpful, responsive and really easy to work with and we were finally able to do our trip with them this year. As someone who was a mere participant of this trip, I have nothing but good things to say about Life Himalaya Trekking. They were quick to answerable of my questions and give us the information we needed prior to arriving in Nepal. Once we landed in Nepal, they took care of us every step of the way and even helped us from getting stranded in Lukla when the airport had closed. I highly recommend them!

My wife and I completed the EBC trek (although we went up Gokyo Valley) with Life Himalaya Trekking last November. Aren't Shiva and his team incredible? It's great to see other travelers getting to know them and having an unforgettable experience like we did in the Himalayas. That last puddle-jumper made me hyperventilate and I wasn’t even on the plane! Can’t wait to learn how you put together your food for this 7-day trek - that’s a whole other part of the world.
That flight to Lukla was something else. As for the food I ate along the trek, I actually didn't pack anything other than a couple snacks (gummy bears, pickles, cookies and chips.) All of the food I ate along the trek was at the teahouses we stopped at along the way. If you follow me on Instagram (@_thehungryhiker), keep an eye out because I will be putting together a fun reel showing ALL of the food I ate along our trek as we made our way up to EBC. The food in Nepal was SO GOOD!! I miss it SO MUCH!

Proof that it’s not always just about reaching the destination. Half of the fun is getting there! As scary as this flight was, I still wouldn’t change anything about it. The whole experience made getting to Lukla that much sweeter. 😊

Thanks for showing something beautiful I didn't get a chance to see. Last year, I went to nepal but unlucky me, I went there in monsoon season. Dumb me🤣
Oh no! You'll have to go back! We went in mid-September, which it the end of the monsoon season. There was only one day that rained on us, which was the first day out of Lukla. From there, it was sunny and clear in the morning and then the clouds would start to roll in late afternoon.

Nice to see all but mine suggestions is that always look for sherpa guide when ur heading to Mount Everest or other 8000mountain in Nepal as they are trustworthy and r the local who are aware of all the happenings in Mountain zone . Don’t think m sherpa n I m promoting my people but I am not among those even if m sherpa there r special people from sherpa who do this profession. Stay safe
I absolutely agree! I wouldn’t want to do a trek like this without a local guide and Sherpas. This is why we booked our trek through Life Himalaya Trekking, lifehimalayatrekking.com. Shiba made the whole trip planning process a breeze. He also set us up with our amazing guide, Prakash and Sherpas: Min, Simon and Bupol, all of whom you be will meet in Part 2 when we officially start our EBC trek.
