- A quick look at my DIY, 3D-Printed Ryobi Automatic Emergency Light!
Please click SHOW MORE!
This is a project to use existing power-tool batteries I already have to create a light which turns on automatically during power-outages. It can also be turned on manually to simply use it as a flashlight.

The LED light is one designed to run on a range of DC voltage inputs, including 12 and 24VDC. That's perfect for our 18V Ryobi Battery.

The 3D print is a modification of a project by Thingiverse user "toeonly" www.thingiverse.com/toeonly/d...
Which was originally based on a Ryobi Soldering Station by JeffWDH: www.thingiverse.com/thing:430...
The power meter I was using to show wattage is a "Kill-a-Watt" style, but a different brand name. I like it because it holds energy usage info after being removed from wall power: amzn.to/3LYuReZ

Super cool! Appreciate you taking the time to document it and share it with the community. We need one for DeWalt batteries!
Like it, very handy.
That is so cool
I did a similar thing with a hyper tough flash light
That Tyco connector is called a weather pack connection in the mechanic world
Very neat design and device. I like it, and all your projects. Just throwing it out there: I made an emergency light a few years back that used an old handheld large flashlight: I replaced the internals with a holder containing 2 18650 batteries, a charge port, and an old led car headlight in place of the bulb. It was very bright. As an experiment I left it on and it continued to produce usable light for 24 days (enough to read by at least) I thought this was very interesting and I've found anecdotal supporting information on how as well as why this worked long term. I was worried the batteries would not charge or even catch fire from such a deep discharge, but they charged all the way back up with no issues after 7 hours.
I was looking at taking a Ryobi flashlight which I bought cheap and simply ADDING circuitry to make it Auto-On in a blackout. Unfortunately, there was just NO room inside the housing for it!
18650 cells are great for all sorts of projects! On this project, I'm just reusing cordless tool batteries I already have.
Does the power supply also charge the battery?
No, it doesn't, and there's no need for it to. Charging higher voltage lithium batteries gets complicated fast. I already have plenty of these batteries and chargers for them. All I need to do is throw a charged battery on here. The battery doesn't provide any power until the light comes on, so it's not like the battery is slowly discharging and needs a charge.
@@BenjaminNelsonX true true. Was just curious.
