  • Today, we'll show you step-by-step how to build a light that turns on automatically when the power goes out! 300mpg.org/2023/04/03/ryobi-a...
    Please click SHOW MORE!
This is a project to use existing power-tool batteries I already have to create a light which turns on automatically during power-outages. It can also be turned on manually to simply use it as a flashlight.
Blog post with lots more details!
    300mpg.org/2023/04/03/ryobi-a...
The LED light is one designed to run on a range of DC voltage inputs, including 12 and 24VDC. That's perfect for our 18V Ryobi Battery.
    STL files:

    or

    Parts List -
    LED Light: amzn.to/3JSX18q
    ON/OFF/ON Switch: amzn.to/3Ket1Fo
    Relays: amzn.to/3TNGcQZ
    1/4" Spade Quick Disconnects: amzn.to/40sUfhl
    DC Input Jack: amzn.to/3TQ5XQE
Keystone 209 Clip (Ryobi Battery Contact): amzn.to/3niCC56
Any low-power 12V DC Power Adapter, for example: amzn.to/40eKNOx
Just make sure the size of the power adapter matches the DC input jack.
    Also needed:
Soldering iron, solder, 18 AWG stranded wire, wire stripper, wire crimper.
This project was printed on an Ender 3 S1 3D Printer:

    Attribution:
The 3D print is a modification of a project by Thingiverse user "toeonly" www.thingiverse.com/toeonly/d...
Which was originally based on a Ryobi Soldering Station by JeffWDH: www.thingiverse.com/thing:430...
The power meter I was using to show wattage is a "Kill-a-Watt" style, but a different brand name. I like it because it holds energy usage info after being removed from wall power: amzn.to/3LYuReZ
This is just a quick look at this project. There will be an upcoming full step-by-step "How-To" Video soon!

    Great ingenuity!

I like this project and idea. I have made several lights that run off of Ryobi batteries, but this is a very useful light. I would like to do a video making one like this but since I don't have a 3D printer (like many small shops). I would be making mine using wood and making the Ryobi receptacle from scraps and a Ryobi clip. I'll drop you a comment when done and will be mentioning your video as my inspiration. Thanks for sharing this.

The same project would pretty pretty cool with an old cigar box or something along those lines. No reason this really needs to be 3D printed. A wood box and a few drill bits should be almost all you need.

Something else that might look good as a project variant would be use to a traditional light bulb socket and a 10-30V bulb.
These ones work really well with 18V batteries.

@@BenjaminNelsonX Thanks for the tips, Ben. I have those bulbs and have made a couple of videos using them. One is using the Ryobi battery and an E26 light fixture (like the one you mentioned, if interested). I think I could add the relay and switch to it if the box has room. Otherwise, I'll just build a new version. I'll let you know when I have made it.

One thing people should know about wall plugs for low voltage is to make sure your DC jack is the same polarity and the jack on the device. I have seen soon many people showing the wrong polarity and burning out there devices.also always good to have some protection such as a fuse to be safe. But other wise awesome build.

It's always good to double-check your DC Polarity!
This project was unusual in that it was the rare case where polarity just didn't matter.

@@BenjaminNelsonX true. I learn the hard way a long time ago when I blow up my ryobi battery using a non ryobi charger. Found out the DC power barrow jack was reversed polarity. Lost a $49 battery.

While it is easy to be a backseat driver and give the "I'd do it this way" to other people's projects. My one change would be to have the switch change between 1: running off of battery when the mains is off, 2: off, 3: running light directly from mains instead of battery. If you have power from the brick anyway, might as well use it in the on mode vs using up battery power.
Of course adding battery maintenance circuitry would be ideal, but that seems like an unnecessary expense considering how well lithium batteries maintain their charge while not being used.

I guess that's the great thing about DIY projects - you can make them however you want.
I provided the parts list and 3D files for anyone to build one of these. Feel free to modify it to you own liking.
I did NOT design this to power the light from the DC adapter because I couldn't see a situation in which I would use it that way.
Essentially, it would be a corded flashlight. The point is that it's portable and handy where you wouldn't have power anyways.
It's not really a pleasant light for a living space. It's perfect for things like working on a car. In that case, having it run on battery is the only way I would want it anyways! No power cables to get in the way!
If I DID want a light where it could also run directly from the wall power, I think it would be best to use a living room lamp, and install a 12Vdc bulb in it. That way, it would just be a normal lamp for household lighting (running off the DC adapter and wall power all the time) but would come on automatically in a blackout.
It would still be a great project, just different than the goals I set out for this one.
Check out the other Ryobi light I designed, the bulb for that would be perfect for a household backup lamp!
      ua-cam.com/video/nLNqwOpsZps/v-deo.html
I also didn't see any advantage of having battery charging circuitry built-in. Modern lithium batteries are great! If they aren't powering anything, self-discharge is just SO minimal.
And of course, I have plenty of Ryobi chargers, so I would simply swap out the battery to charge and put a fresh one in after I used this as a portable lamp.

Nice project. Ryobi should reach out to you in a positive way. Just saying!

Excellent job, however one thing that's essential to an emergency light such as this is the light staying fully charged until it's needed. If there was a battery charging circuit implemented that would periodically check the charge state and top it off that would make this perfect. To maintain battery health it could even limit charge to 80% rather than keeping the battery at 100% all the time.

Hey, is it possible to make it battery powered and 12 V powered or even find a 18 V power supply how would you do the wiring? Can you let me know?
