I think casting more villains would mix up the show and add more conflict and messiness without retracting from gameplay. US survivor needs some drama outside of sob stories, and let’s be real, iconic survivor moments often happen because of the villain.
I don't think the point is to find a person with villainous qualities outright, it's to find a cast with differing personalities that production knows will clash with one another. Everyone in the new era are just too friendly.
They cast too many people who just come across as fake. Watching the older seasons it is crazy how much more genuine these people seem, now it’s just a bunch of dorks. That’s honestly the main issue with casting a bunch of super fans, with most super fans all having very similar personality types.

What I love about my disliking for the new era is that it's given me a bigger appreciation for most of the seasons 40 and before. I'm going back watching seasons for a third or more times again and seasons I've previously thought were just alright I now really enjoy since they're free of all the garbage the new era has brought in.

While I do feel the F4 Firemaking Twist in S35 has certainly been a huge blow against every season since, and that David vs Goliath was "the last great season", the post-40 era makes me really appreciate seasons like 9, 10, 11, 15, 18, 25, 28, 29, 32, and hell even 33. 7 just gets reinforced as being my favourite too, haha.
When i was expressing these opinions about sob stories and casting, fakeness and lazy challenges, the community was attacking me back when 41 was airing. Over the years though a lot of people have come to the same realisation that Survivor isnt as good with all these changes and im glad people are speaking up about it. We can be fans of a show without being mindless consumers.
I’m in the too many gamebots camp, not enough characters. It’s like watching Reddit survivor. Older seasons are compelling because it was more of a social experiment and a showcase of a cool new location.
The big problem is the repetitive format. 3 tribes of 6 is boring but the savvy or sweat challenge, rice negoation and new beach at the finale are just unnecessary. Instead of having some big theme/casting twist for a season we now just have the same thing over and over and it’s starting to get boring
That's my biggest issue with the new Era. The lack of themed seasons are making them predictable and not as interesting. Like I didn't mind the first two seasons because they film them back to back and don't know how people will respond to the changes. But now if the newer seasons don't really change things up, they will start to lose fans.
There’s nothing that differentiates the new seasons from each other. Same format, same location, same stupid twists and the casts aren’t particularly unique or recognizable.
When 50% of the tribal convos are about social issues and not the game, I just rollllll my eyes. I miss the old cutthroat Survivor where everyone didn't have to do a group hug every damn episode. Bring back some villains please God.
I largely agree with everything you said, but I do disagree with casting all superfans as a generally good thing. Red might be a vibrant color, but not when we get 18 shades of it. Good mix of gamebots and non-fans shows diversity as well, and makes more people stand out. A superfans vs recruits season could even make for an interesting theme down the road? Unrelated: I dislike color coding the players by tribe with wardrobe as if the buff isn't enough. Let them wear what they want and express who they are on that subtle level.

Older seasons with less racial diversity were able to have interesting casts because they were diverse in terms of their beliefs and background. Instead of hyperfixating on racial diversity, the new seasons should value people with diverse beliefs and personalities.
Solid vid. I agree with pretty much everything. There are a lot of smaller things that annoy me too that the show tries to make a big deal of like the penalty for losing and moving to a new island with only 3 days left which are just pointless twists that the show does nothing with. There's also the repetitive 7-1-0 votes which I find hard to believe them all being coincidental. And the whole backstory of players, I only find an issue with when it's told at the beginning or the start of the season where I'd much rather prefer to gradually find out more as the season goes along and have it just feel more natural. When it's at the beginning it just feels like they're just trying to get it out the way and make those the first impressions for most of the cast rather than their personalities.
I feel like the biggest problem with modern Survivor is something that people know about, but for whatever reason dance around it. Is simply the quality of the show has been noticeably decreased in comparison to the pre modern seasons. Survivor feels cheep now, and I know I’m not alone in this opinion.
The New Era is garbage. I stopped watching after 42, because I heard 43/44 was gonna be themeless, in Fiji again, and 26 days. You can't keep removing everything that made the show great and expect the audience to accept it.
Absolutely, the show is still watchable for me but the golden age is gone. Those points you mentioned make the game stale and repetitive. And they don’t cast legendary figures like a coach or a FairPlay.
I feel like the big problem is the lack of personality each season has they use the same challenges one pretty pathetic reward the sanctuary and thats it and every season having the same format with them cast people that are like carbon copies of each other and with it only being 26 days and having no themes the new era feels cheap and mediocre
If a producer's twist can dictate who goes home instead of the players, I don't like it. Producer's twists should influence how players make their decisions, but it shouldn't make the decisions for them. Trust the players!
I agree that socioeconomic and cultural diversity has decreased in some ways to the detriment of the show. 3-tribe is also an issue; I find 2-tribe lends to more interesting gameplay
Great video, great points. Survivor is losing its flare and personality with the absence of season themes, boring cast, and the absence of the intro. I loved seeing the whole cast in the intro and hearing the different iteration of the opening theme for each season! I really wish they’d take the show anywhere besides Fiji, I miss the seasons themed after the places they went to. They were definitely more memorable because of their location. One of my biggest issues with modern Survivor is the casting… it feels like every new season after 40 has essentially the same cast with minor tweaks. Very boring people. And yes they may be diverse racially or religiously, but in terms of their general beliefs, behaviors, and politics, the cast are all way too similar to each other. Back in older seasons there were more unique personalities which would cause certain players to stick out among others. Before I even watch the video my answer is a simple “no” Season 41 is a bottom 5 season & that’s not up for discussion Season 42 is actually fairly enjoyable in large part to its far more likeable cast & even editing & good pacing but still suffers from the god awful format & twists & advantages Plus wasn’t crazy about Maryanne winning, even tho she was a fun character 43 honestly felt like a slightly better version of 41 but that’s not saying much because of how bad 41 is. With Gabbler being such an embarrassingly bad winner 44 was just a mess if you ask me, I felt like the twists were so poorly thought out & the cast was incredibly mediocre. Not including 42 I think casting has been absolutely atrocious. The format of each season has been garbage & it’s just not as enjoyable having every player be a super fan with a sob story. Go back to the basics. It was working for such a long time for a reason.

Miss the eye candy casting. 26 days is too short Hour glass twist was atrocious. How did it get past any kind of review process? Too many advantages and twists. What was with the Heidi force a vote twist? Why does a person not on a tribal have to have a vote on said tribal. The show keeps messing with its own structural integrity. And that's it's most precious commodity. Otherwise it becomes nonsensical, and unsatisfying to watch. Production introduction of their own fake idol not wise. From now on players will never quite know if they have the actual idol. Not enough blue collars. And not like firemen and such, but, like a guy who cleans up roadkill. Those were some of the best characters. No more old people. Now the oldest person on a tribe can be like 36. There was great tribe dynamics with mix of old and young. Gabler is an outlier, and he wasn't even that old historically. Eye candy.

The new era is 10x better than the old era, with new twists, good gameplay, a great new 26 Day format, A lot of good challenges and good players.

7:00 Rocksroy was a huge character on 42. From a gameplay perspective he sucked, but character wise? He was great
Gabler shouldn't have won. He barely did anything, and he only won because he donated the million to charity. It made Survivor 43 dull and boring.

I thought 41-43 were terrible, boring casting, sleepy story lines, ugh. 44 was good. I almost felt like it was an Old School season.
